I'm late to the party, but for whatever it's worth my favorite spring flower is buffalo currant, also known as golden currant. I grew up on the rural Dakota plains and nothing tops those long-lasting orange and pink sunsets with the sweet scent of wild buffalo currant on the breeze. I think this technique will work for those, too. Thank you for sharing it!

Oh my goodness Ellen, you have me just holding my breath waiting for me the lilacs here in New Hampshire bloom. We are so fortunate that our entire parking area is surrounded by them and they are free for the cutting ✂️😊. So sad that they only last for such a very short time. Mmmmm.......I can already smell their lovely fragrance. You have done such an exquisite painting capturing their beauty (oh dear, must I break my April 'no spend' in order to get that gorgeous Holbein lilac?). I love gardenias too! Tried painting but whites are a pain. Mine had a creamy cast too as well as white. Left my bush behind when I moved from NC to Texas. New owners cut the bush down.

I love this one too!! One question - near the end, you added a lighter tone to the dark but I didn't catch what that was...Grew up in NJ with some huge Lilac bushes in the front yard. I loved them and this brought back some great memories. I am going to give this one a stab!

I think you're asking about 'gouache', which is a water-based pigment but more opaque than watercolors. She mixed white gouache with the lilac watercolor to touch up the area that was too dark.
