Great video, Patrick! I’ve been using a split primary palette for a long time now. I’m really a big fan of the limited palette in general. Keeps things simple, neat and harmonious! 😉 Thank you 🙏🏼

What I love about Quinacridone Rose is that it can mix both bright purple and orange.

Great video Patrick. I think I"m going to make some color wheels like this. It would be a big help when trying to mix colors, especially if you are painting outside. And I agree with Essie, much better than the little boxes because you can see the gradation in the colors. Thank you so much - I love your channel!

It always surprises me the amount of color you can get from the primary colors only it was a fun exercise and I will certainly keep the color wheel pinned up in my little studio. Thank you for commenting today :)

Good demo. Very glad you didn’t have us make a much of perfect little boxes for them. Just mixing them with where you started (which colors)was great. I do feel that it is helpful to me to remember the cool and warm colors. Now I need to put it into practice, This would be great in a journal and then it would be easy to refer to. Have a great weekend.

I hate those fiddly boxes too much better to connect the colors. I really enjoyed the making the demo it forces me to do things I wouldn't usually do. I learned a lot from it too. Have a great weekend too Essie.

Patrick, I really enjoy your instruction. You’re straight-forward and easy to be around (figuratively). Knowledgeable without being pretentious or preachy, OR annoyingly verbose. Thank you for sharing your artistic and teaching talents. I am learning so much. A age 57, I’ve finally found a pursuit for which I feel passionate, and one where I’m oblivious to the passage of time. Watercolor is so wonderful.

Thanks, Patrick. I liked this demonstration. I made myself one of these wheels a long time ago, and it has proved very handy. I only own seven colours [Alizarin Crimson, Lemon Yellow, Payne's Gray (Cool Primaries), and Light Red, Raw Sienna, Ultramarine Blue (Warm Primaries), and Burnt Umber] and I manage quite well with them. I am a firm believer in a limited palette. The palettes with a gazillion colours in them just make my head spin--plus, it can get very expensive. Anyway, your explanation should prove very helpful to everyone learning to mix colours and know what they (the colours) can do and what they (the painters) can do with them.

Thanks, Margaret you have some great colors there to work within your palette i am sure your color wheel is a bright and cheerful as mine. LIke you I cant deal with too many colors in my palette it really does confuse me and take a lot of pleasure away from painting. I agree, learning to mix the primaries is so important it makes you realize you won't need to spend money on the colors that inevitably end up drying up in your palette. Thanks for taking the time to comment. have a great weekend.

I so agree. I have bought many colors on the advice of some of the 'teachers' (schills) here and learned the hard way.

Very interesting and informative. Now, you show 2 yellows, 2 reds, and 2 blues. I admit I find it difficult to understand what makes them "warm" or "cool". Is there an easy way to understand this fundamental concept? Thanks and keep your tutorials up. Mario

Thanks Patrick, I made a split primary palette a while ago. But I've used aureolin yellow as my cool. Do you think that works ok?

Barbrajoan Joan of course it works. Aureolin makes beautiful greens and being a cobalt it is great for glazing and easy to lift.

Patrick I'm a beginner just 5 months into painting and I just discovered your group of tutorials that appear to date from 2-3 years ago. Are you still monitoring comments and offering feedback on the 5 landscape and boats and beaches tutorials? I'm working on those anyway and finding them very valuable. Thank you for all the effort you put in to helping people learn watercolor. Gary

Hi Patrick pleased to hear you fine the tutorials useful. I have a website Purewatercolour.com that is free to join and upload your work to the forums for critiqe and suggestion by the other member artists or if you prefer more one to one you can join my patreon page there is link under the video. You can also ask questions here but its often impossible to answer everyone in any detail due to the amount of comments given on my youtube channel. check patreon and pure watercolour out see if they are of any use to you.

Very interesting. However, as a beginner, when the instructor requires 15 colors as part of the list of materials, I found it impossible to mix colors to get equivalents. Also , why not use black or white to change shades?

What'll really fry your brain is to realize that the "warms" are on the lower side of the energy map and "cools" have more energy. Go figya.

Actually you switched the blues , UB is cool and PB is warm, I don’t have time to explain it so watch MarkowsyArts video about the same topic and look at the comment I wrote to him, that will give you the whole story.

Thanks very much for your comment my pb leans towards green and my ub leans towards red . I’m not saying your wrong but it’s marginal really weather it’s warm or cool the most important thing is we can paint with them. I don’t get to hung up on colour theory everyone has got their own point of view.thanks again I’m pleased you commented.
