Old guy, who was never much of a draftsman, but got pretty good at abstractions about 30 years ago, coming back to it now after a long lay off, trying more representational things. I love your process, very helpful, even if I continue to be a bit of a rule breaker, and trial and error guy. These videos are so helpful. Thanks a bunch.

Wow, I’ve just been painting rose leaves on a bunch of pink roses and stopped for a break. I came on this video by accident and just in time too. I realised I’d made some mistakes already but nothing I can’t fix (I think). I made the veins darker, don’t ask me why because I’ve painted roses before and I’ll blame the ten year gap in my painting that made me do it. ha ha! Anyway, there are a lot of very good tips in this video so I think before I start on the next part of the roses I’d better watch your rose tutorials. Thanks for all your good tips & tricks, they are very helpful.

Unlikely. If it's a loose sheet it's SAA practice paper. If I am on a board of stretched paper it's Saunders Waterford High White NOT surface. 🙂 I rarely use hot press even for botanical it's very hard to paint on.

I’ve just discovered your channel today and have very happily started binge watching your videos. You are an excellent teacher! I’m new to watercolor and took a “painting roses” workshop recently. The artist teaching the class, a very talented and kind person, had us use Naples yellow, burnt sienna and alizarin crimson for the petals, along with water droplets to create a back run on every petal. The final painting is so depressing and looks like a bunch of dead roses. I thought that might end my attempt to paint flowers, but watching your tutorials has been so helpful, I think I definitely be trying to paint them again. Thank you!
@IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber
@IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Well there are no bad colours but all of the ones you mention are problematic for flowers: Naples yellow, chalky and opaque, Burnt Sienna a granulating earth colour and Alizarin, a rather dull pink/red. Hard to get any freshness with that combination I fear 😏

I loved this one too. I was able to watch the 3 in succession so it all came together so nicely. There is only one thing that has bothered me throughout this gorgeous painting and that is the gray shadowing. I love what you did with it and found that a very helpful part. The thing is….I feel it’s too dark. My eye wants to go straight to it and I just itch to wet a brush and pull some of it out. That has to just be my perception but it bothered me enough to make the comment. With my own paintings, I too, when I think I’m done, look to see what “ pop’s” out at me and go in and fix it like you did the stems and leaves on this one. The colors on the bud and leaves are breathtaking and I love what you did there.👍👍

@@IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber That's good, I was told Suffolk, sorry. It's Wales, Michele, and like the inuit with snow, we have three hundred words for rain! My favourites are 'mizzle', and 'murky dismal' ! We've returned to the great storms coming in off the Atlantic, and they are dumping a load; really heavy, sustained periods of absolutely blatting wind/rain combo. I dropped my house keys yesterday getting from the car to the door (three yards!), and was soaked to the skin. Thought I was in an old b&w movie! I live on a hill which faces down an estuary, so not much shelter! Never mind, with a new production of 'Christmas Carol' on the beeb, and the gkids, it doesn't matter a bit. Have a good Xmas, and thank you for your brill help over the last year.Den
