I know - it is hard to carve out time to paint but I would say even 15 minutes doing very small studies of say a cherry or a leaf will add to your painting skills. You don't need to always paint a big full painting. That's how I managed years back when I was teaching full time and was exhausted. I agree with you though as I like watching other artists working - it is relaxing and informative isn't it? :)

To be honest Alison watercolour painting is all I've tried so far - I'd love to paint with oil but with watercolour i find it more of a freer method of painting and there's so much room for error. Any mistakes i make can easily be rectified. Can I just ask you what type of paper do you use?

I’ve watched a lot of tutorials and experimented with many styles from very loose to very detailed. I love your approach of sketching the outline and then keeping it loose with room for as much detail as you care to add. I also love your explaining every step and color used. I will continue to follow as this is where I hope to be. You are too nice in responding to everyone. it’s ok to make it easier on yourself and know that we appreciate your efforts to bring these and that you read all the comments but we understand if you cannot reply to everyone. Take care and thanks Alison.

Actually my first was your watercolor landscape (with all the green/yellow) just a couple of weeks ago and this was my second. I actually went to art school for 5 years way back, took watercolor and oils and only learned that I didn't like it. Sadly, I also learned that a great artist doesn't always make a great teacher. Most of my instructors dealt with my confusion or questions by taking the brush out of my hand and finishing the painting themselves. :( So here I am, almost 40 years later and I decided to give it another try. And I'm loving it!! =)
@AlisonFennell
@AlisonFennell 6 жыл бұрын
Wow - that's a good while to have studied art Arlene - but yes - this is a common cry from adults learning now that any art instruction they had was lacking in basic technique and it was just all about expressing yourself with no guidance on how to do that. I am glad these videos help. I am an ex primary school teacher and I used to teach adults English in Spain soo I am used to preparing lessons that are clear and hopefully engage. I enjoy helping others on their own way with art - more coming soon. Alison

I watched the video with interest as a beginner at watercolor and a former resident of N. California. I like it and the real time is better than speeded up. I like the talking and absence of music. Note I did see an editing error as the video seems to revert to a former point before you added in the tree that goes up off the page. Warm Regards, Donald Mayfield,

That's very nice to hear Don. So have you been to Yellowstone and what attracted you to watercolour? Thank you. I too dislike distracting music and speeded up tutorials as students cannot learn much. Wonderful painting Alison! I loved your commentary and found it very easy to follow. I also really appreciate that you did it in real time. Gives me a real feel for how the painting develops. I have a quick question though: how did you decide which colors you would use for the various elements in your painting? Was it intuition or is there more of a theory you had in mind? Thank you! Love the painting. :-)
@AlisonFennell
@AlisonFennell 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks Jalopy - I don't see the point of doing speeded up demos - waste of time for people trying to learn! I basically chose colours similar to the natural ones - as long as they were in keeping and made the whole harmonious I used them. Enjoy!

I just discovered your art when your video above was "pushed" for my viewing. You are presenting a wonderful lesson. It really stands out among this crowded space. My observations: I am surprised to see that you have used 90 lb hot press paper. Many artists seem to use only 300 lb and some no less than 140 lb cotton papers. Do you often use this 90 lb weight for your watercolor art? You have taped the paper to your board, but my guess is that you may not have soaked the paper and stretched it by taping it down while wet. Is that so? You have also given some unique tips such as your flat brush to make ripples in your lake water reflections. I have never seen that before. Also your voice and pace in your lesson is very easy to follow. I really appreciate that in today's hurry, hurry world. With your voice you present a very calm and reassuring presence. I would bet you have many repeating students. I definitely will search and watch more of your art and lessons. I suspect your blog will contain many more treasures. You have my very best wishes, personally and professionally. You have created a beautiful painting and presented a wonderful lesson. Thank you for sharing your talents.

Hi Howard - what a lovely encouraging message - thank you! I m am delighted that you find my teaching style suiting you. It makes me smile to hear how you find my voice. A few people have said that - so I am glad it gives a calm feel as watercolour is stressful enough on its own isn't it? Are you mostly into landscapes? Yes - I mostly use lightweight paper - and I stretch it the night before using the soaking method so that when it's dry it will not buckle as I paint on it - I have a KZbin video about how I stretch paper. People tend to use heavier paper to avoid having to stretch it as heavier paper tends not to buckles so much when wetted - but it still can a bit and so I do not want that risk. I hope you enjoy looking at my other tutorials and my blog which I write to inspire art and creativity in whoever wishes to read. I find it hard to follow videos myself if they are too noisy or busy or jumpy so I shall carry on this way.

My landscape paintings generally have not been very good. I find that I concentrate more with my portrait paintings. I have done better with those. I first started drawing portraits and I assume that is why my portraits have been better. I have given your demonstration of Yosemite Valley a try. I believe my attempt of it has been a good go. I will study your methods more and I am sure that will help me a lot. I am glad that I found your instructions.

that masking fluid would be good for winter landscapes, it would stop trees and bushes bleeding into the white areas, unless there is a method for doing that without masking, because a snow landscape might require a lot of masking.
@AlisonFennell
@AlisonFennell 6 жыл бұрын
Absolutely - it would save a lot of white paper and look very bright when rubbed away. Another method is to use wax (like a wax candle and scrub that into areas you want white - I don't like it as wax gets in my brushes and I am sure makes them less absorbant to water over time. Another technique is to paint on gum arabic. That you cannot rub off but it just preserves white. Here is a brill video on masking and gum arabic - uk.video.search.yahoo.com/search/video?fr=mcafee&p=winsor+%26+newton+gum+arabic+v+masking+fluid+masterclass+video#id=2&vid=e09557c054ecd1b73ac3c8e4168fb72f&action=click
