Your welcome ed, I think we all go through periods of our paintings looking lifeless. Take a fresh approach and use brighter colours it might not feel right, I'm sure you'll be pleased with the end result.

Good Demo Patrick, It's great to see how others approach a painting task. Would love to know what that palette is you are using. It has nice deep mixing wells.
@PatrickLeyGreaves11 жыл бұрын
Hi John thanks for your comments, i agree its good to see others working I've gained lots of inspiration + technique building. The pallet I'm using is the Liz Deaking palette the best one that I've come across for my needs here is a link to it www.artsupplies.co.uk/item-liz-deakin-watercolour-palette.htm Thanks agian
@JohnSalmon11 жыл бұрын
Thankyou Patrick Ley-Greaves. Shortly after I watched your video I visited your site/blog and you mentioned artsupplies.co there so I had already found the Liz Deakin palette. Maybe that will be my next purchase. I used to see your work quite regularly on eBay and wondered where you'd gone. I see you are embracing the new technology more. Unfortunately, we have to engage with our customers on all these different platforms now. KZbin, Facebook, Google+, Twitter in order to get any sales. I spend more time doing that now than painting. Mad.

Hi Ian sorry about the audio I have put notations in but only viewable on some pc's or laptops i think its got something to do with having flash player installed. I have just checked out your website, very nice. Your paintings are very relaxing excellent work. Keep an eye on my channel and web site www.Patrickleygreaves.com for more tutorials in the coming weeks. Any more questions please feel free to ask.

Hello, Patrick. Thank you for the video, I found it quite useful and inspiring. I've never felt I was able to tame watercolour but now I'm thinking of having another go. Could you tell me what brushes you use? Is it squirrel or something? And the size? Thanks in advance!

Thank you so much! It's my first time to use water color. I did it well because of your teaching. But the color in my painting is too pure and bright, could you explain how to make the color more grey but not dirty?
@PatrickLeyGreaves9 жыл бұрын
时雨 Thank you very much for your comment I am pleased the video helped you paint your first watercolour. Mixing greys is simple blue, yellow and red. Try not to over mix colours and keep your pallet clean, its easy to allow colours to become muddy by over mixing. Practice on a piece of paper using the primary colours blue, yellow and red and see what combinations of grey you can come up with . You will soon get the hang of it!

Hi, really enjoyed the video. I was just wondering where the harbour is. Thanks a lot.
@RaghebElAssouad10 жыл бұрын
after watching this video, I start thinking that there really no standard technique with watercolors. I've been watching several videos and your way of painting lets me think that watercolors is simply pure fantasy..
@PatrickLeyGreaves10 жыл бұрын
Interesting thought , I think you could be right!!
@EricSareyka10 жыл бұрын
I don't agree. There are several standard techniques with watercolors. For instance you paint another way if you are painting wet-on-wet or wet-on-dry or dry-on-wet or if you premix your colors on the palette oder mix on the canvas with more or less water, or use negative painting, or do a mixed painting of watercolor and ink. And if something is pure phantasy doesn't depend on watercolor, acrylic or oil but on the subject you're painting. ;) Especially in this case it is an artist interpretation of a real world existing scenery. Nevertheless this is a nice painting!
@RaghebElAssouad9 жыл бұрын
yes techniques are common, painting with fantasy is less common and without both is simply painting. Appreciation is an eye job, who cares?! :)

Hi Patrick, I finally am ready to invest in a mop. If I get an Isabey 6234, what size do you think is good for my first investment? I only paint small, never larger than Arches quarter sheets. Would a size 7 do, or should I go larger? Currently I use a soft size 14 round brush by Rosemary but I prefer to get a mop.
@PatrickLeyGreaves9 жыл бұрын
Janet Catmull Hi Janet, I would go for a size 3 big enough to complete a whole page wash on 1/4 imperial but small enough to get detail. I would think with a bit of practice you could easily paint a entire picture with the one brush. They point up so well that detail can easily be achieved. In the coming weeks maybe I will do demo one brush and three colours only!
@janetcatmull2689 жыл бұрын
Patrick Ley-Greaves Yes, I recall seeing you paint a good part of a painting with a small squirrel mop -- I think it was the Cornwall scene with headlands and two boats. Thanks for your advice! I can't wait to have a good excuse to get a new brush! Looking forward to your watercolour class, too.

Hello Patrick, thank you for this excellent demo. I'm trying to plan a similar scene from a photo, but it has white buildings reflected in the water, and i can't think of a way of doing this in watercolour without using white gouache ( which i don't like using). I've tried achieving this in the past with masking fluid, but that didn't really work. Have you any ideas? Thank you, Stephen.

It's a beautiful painting, thanks for posting it. I'm a beginner painter and I still tend to get stuck on painting exactly what I see. When you were painting the buildings you said to try to vary the colours to keep the painting interesting. So I'm wondering if you use the actual colours of the buildings from your source picture or just use whatever colours work in your painting?

I'm a beginner, and to be honest I think this is a little advanced for me. I'd probably only end up feeling extremely frustrated if I attempted to draw, let alone paint it. It's a lovely painting though.
@PatrickLeyGreaves9 жыл бұрын
Tracy Blackburn ~Tracy just go for it, its only a piece of paper. Half the fun of painting is experimenting. Don't worry about the drawing to much. Personally I find the painting is what counts and bad drawing can be covered up by good painting.
@ellib22319 жыл бұрын
For sure, if I was good enough at painting to cover up a bad drawing I wouldn't be looking at beginners tutorials. Still, you never know, one day if I keep on practicing with the basics I might surprise the world with an oustanding piece of artistry. Don't hold your breath though :D Don't mind me, I'm just in a crabby mood today, but I do appreciate the response and attempt at encouragement :)
@PatrickLeyGreaves9 жыл бұрын
Tracy Blackburn if you find the scene to complicated simplify just do simple outlines trying to scale the objects try not to think of what your drawing as a farmhouse just think of it as a shape. I know its not easy. Just keep things simple to start with. I will post a more simple demo for those starting out shortly. Thanks for the comment.
