Don’t be confused by the multiple names for Smokey Hollow Falls - also known as Grindstone, Waterdown or Great Falls. They all describe the same beautiful ribbon waterfall in its leafy forest setting that flows from Grindstone Creek in Waterdown.
Gushing 33-ft. waterfall surrounded by forest, with a viewing platform & hiking trail.
Address: 80 Mill St S, Waterdown, ON L0R 1R0
The Waterdown Trail to Smokey Hollow is a peaceful and beautiful little spot that connects to plenty of trails, and of course this main route. The trail takes users to the viewing overlook of the falls right at the beginning of the path, and if they keep walking a little the route will bring users to the bottom and they can fairly easily get themselves closer to the waterfall. This is a majestic trail, with plenty of variety and changes of inclines and declines and twists and turns. The iconic Bruce Trail and Niagara Escarpment are in full demonstration here, with huge beautiful trees and fungus and moss - with the mossy rock being a favourite for users during the wetter months. The trail also passes by the inukshuk alley, which is amazing to see those sentinels of stone created by the passerby people. The trail is also very well marked thanks to the amazing maintenance of the Bruce Trail Conservation group, so be sure to stay on trail to help preserve this area for others.
Smokey Hollow Falls is almost always very crowded on weekends or evenings, making this trail one where if not here during the week, it is possible that users will be doing a lot of waiting to go around people on the trail. Of course, this trail does also have seasonality to it. Spring is a muddy but nice time to visit if looking for few people, since the beauty of this area is the quiet atmosphere. During summer, this area is very humid but usually pretty busy, since folks like to catch some of the spray coming off of the falls to cool themselves down while enjoying the greenery of the environment. During fall, this is the busiest time of the year since the amazing colours come out and combine with the unique natural beauty of the area. Definitely come during the week when the fall colours are best to properly enjoy the area. During winter, the area can be more difficult to hike with all the snow and ice but very worth it. The water at the falls is normally frozen solid and is a great sight. It is amazing that water still finds its way downstream. As water goes downstream it finds a way to expose itself through holes in snow cover.
Parking is a bit of a challenge as there is only a very small lot, which during busy days is often closed to prevent overuse. Authorities will barricade the parking entrance, and users should not park in the lot unless it is specifically mentioned on their website. Nearest parking (2 hours limit) is on Main St near Union St. Trail entrance is 5 mins walk from here.

WATERFALL DESCRIPTION
At 10 metres tall, this isn’t the area’s biggest waterfall, but this short and fast-flowing waterfall is surrounded by a great section of the Bruce Trail. It has a rugged footpath tracing its way up and down the ravine formed by Niagara Escarpment.
Once used to power a local sawmill, the falls are now the centre of beautifully rehabilitated park
