Join us for a walk around Watergate Bay, Newquay, Cornwall. Home of the famous Boardmasters Festival! Our walk starts on the coast path with fabulous views of Watergate Bay and Watergate Beach. Watergate Bay is home to the popular Boardmasters Festival, which takes place in August each year.
Watergate Beach is a two-mile-long stretch of sandy beach on the Atlantic coast of north Cornwall, England, United Kingdom. It is situated in Watergate Bay two miles north of Newquay on the B3276 road to Padstow near the village of Tregurrian.
The beach has toilets, a shop and cafe. It is popular for water sports, especially surfing and also for kite-flying and sand art. In May, 2007, the beach hosted the English National Surfing Championships.
Boardmasters Festival is an annual event held in Cornwall, United Kingdom, usually spanning five days on the second weekend of August. The event is a combination of live music and surfing/skateboarding competitions in and around the town of Newquay. The festival was founded in 1981 as a surfing competition, and in 2005 it was expanded to include music acts, taking place at Watergate Bay. The current capacity is 53,000. The majority of the music performances take place to the north of Newquay near Watergate Bay. The Watergate Bay site hosts the music arena and all festival camping.
Watergate Bay Hotel first opened in July 1900. The Hotel hoped to cater for railway tourists that were expected to arrive on the Padstow, Bedruthan & St.Mawgan Railway line, which would also extend to Newquay however the line was never constructed.
