Hi, I'm Caren....Welcome to my channel. Our kids are all grown and gone and my husband and I spend most of our time these days trying to earn the approval and affections of our feral rescue cats, Richard and Baby Girl (still in the early stages of working on Hyacinth). You know what they say, "Dogs have masters and cats have slaves." Truer words have never been spoken!
Thanks for watching ~ Caren

Great recipe! I had followed one with 3.4oz pudding (the huge box) with ONE can pineapple, half the nuts and marshmallows and I’ve never seen such a mess! I could hardly stir it. Tried to fluff it up with more Cool Whip but it was starting to congeal and was full of lumps. I was making it for a delivery to a sick neighbor and thankfully I started early and had time to go to the store for more Cool Whip but while I was gone, hubs found this one and texted “found it!”. So i followed these ingredients and got a perfect salad. Great video too - no blah, blah, blah, etc. New subscriber. Thx so much.

This is one of the best comments I have received so far. I love that your hubby was helping you out on your mission!! This is the recipe that my mother has made since the 70s and it never fails.....I love how light and fluffy it is after it sets up and how the marshmallows turn into little wisps of foam. We have this every Thanksgiving and Christmas and it just reminds me of all the wonderful holidays over the decades with my mom and grandmother. Thanks for watching and commenting!!

I never knew this had an official name, my mom use to bring to parties! She didn't use marshmallows, but everything else is the same. She was always so protective of the recipe too, family would always ask her to make it and as a kid I had to swear to never tell any of my cousins. And yet here's Jell-O printing the recipe on their boxes! Thanks for the video, seeing the recipe on the box just made my whole day lol

My mom made it every holiday and I would never touch it as a kid because of the nuts and I didn't know what all was in it. I probably first tasted it in my 40s and couldn't believe how light and fluffy and yummy it was. I especially love how after it sets, the marshmallows turn into little puffs of foam like stuff. When I was a little girl (well even now as a middle aged woman - LOL), I would spend hours looking thru my mom's cookbooks. I was so fascinated with the pictures of the perfect little housewives in their aprons cooking in their 50s and 60s kitchens. I read every recipe, cover to cover. I'm going to try it your way... If you do try this recipe, let me know if it tastes the same as your recipe and if you like it. Just be sure and let it set in fridge several hours or overnight so it has time to set up, so it is light and fluffy....the marshmallows change consistency and I don't know if it's because of the pineapple juice, but it is the coolest thing ever. Thanks so much for watching and commenting!! Caren

@@ccjohnson6798 yes ...I will let you know... but you make a good point about the juice possibly changing the consistency of the marshmallows.... maybe that's why my mom drained the pineapple juice... and it stayed the same consistency a little longer than what you notice the change in your marshmallows.... you just may be on to something...thank you so very much for taking the time to reply.

Wow! Your recipe comes from the Jello box! I thought my mom's did, too, but hers wasn't called Watergate salad. Mom's had the pudding mix, pineapple, and Cool Whip just like yours, but no marshmallow or added nuts. It had a cup of shredded coconut stirred in. To me, that makes it a different recipe for a different dessert. I suppose Jello can have more than one recipe for a pistachio pudding dessert. Really surprised how similar they are, yet different, distinct. We even made a low calorie version by going light/sugar free on the ingredients. Here's to Pistachio Pudding!

I've found that using 1 8-ounce container (2 cups) of sour cream or plain yogurt and 1 16-ounce container of Cool Whip cuts the sweetness a bit. Combine the pudding, DRAINED pineapple, and nuts (I use finely chopped walnuts) with the sour cream until well blended, then add the Cool Whip. Mix well then stir in the marshmallows. Cover and chill in the refrigerator overnight. The marshmallows soak up some of the liquid so it's less gloppy.

Here is a trick if you want to present a clear bowl on the table at the end of the meal . Take a brown paper made out of a brown paper bag or use wax paper or parchemin or any other good idea but not foil, and make a collar around the bowl . Then spoon the salad in the bowl . Put the bowl in the refrigerator. Before the guests get in , take the bowl out of the refrigerator , remove slowly the brown paper shirt you have insert in before and then you have a perfectly clean bowl like magic to show on the table . You can also add on the top of your bowl a little touch of red and green with red and green marasquin cheeries or whole rasberries with mint leaves . Make a motif like a christmas tree or a heart or a USA flag or a music treble key or the name of the person who has his or her birthday on that night etc.... When serving such a meal , it is important to give the teeth something to chew on . Otherwise the desert swallows in too easy. Pecan nuts are important and don"t cut the walnuts too small.Half walnuts make peoples happier .

I was in elementary and have no memory of any presidents before Ford, but the other day I was looking at old photos and found pictures that my dad took of us when he was stationed in Anchorage at Elmendorf AFB when President & Mrs. Nixon were either getting off or on the plane. It looks like the picture is from the winter of 1970/1971. I have no recollection of the event and both of my parents are deceased now so I can't ask them about it......but it was interesting to come across the pictures. Anyway, I digress......LOL.....but around the holidays I am flooded with memories of my parents and grandparents.... Thanks so much for watching and commenting again and Happy Holidays!! Caren

I make mine with a jar of cherries mixed in and I drain my pineapple.We also use walnuts instead of pecans, and 3or 4 cups of marshmallows.I always save the pineapple and cheery juice and mix it with sprite to give my kids a treat. We always called it Green Fluff.I can't remember a Thanksgiving or Christmas without Green Fluff on the table. It's great for the kids to make.

I find with only 2 cups of marshmallows it’s too soupy so I add more. I guess it depends on how thick u want it, I also find if I do it the day of it doesn’t have time to get too thick.
@ccjohnson6798
@ccjohnson6798 5 жыл бұрын
I've always done it the day before so I have never noticed that but what I think is funny is that when I make it, the marshmallows seem to change consistency and become like the texture of foam or something. Maybe the pineapple juice has something to do with it, but I like it because they become very light and not chewy anymore. Thanks for watching and commenting!! Caren

The mini marshmallows in this recipe turn into little puffs of foam after it sets.....I am not sure if it's the pineapple juice that does that to them, but it is really kind of cool........just in case you rethink the marshmallows. Lots of memories from children about the loss of parents, mom's particularly. Remember kids (even if your older) there will most likely be a day when they are no longer around, so be kind, and keep harsh words to yourselves. I remember my mom would tell me, when we were not getting along, " one day I won't be around" I would tell her she sounded like a certain ethnic mother with those comments. That's life, choose today what kind of garden you want to plant for the future.

LOL...that's funny. That trifle bowl was a wedding gift from my first marriage almost 30 years ago and I have never made Trifle in my life, haha. My mother used to make the watergate salad when I was little and I would never eat it but once I grew up and tried it and saw how simple it was to make, I decided to make it for Thanksgiving one year and the only serving dish I had left to use was that damn trifle bowl, LOL. And the amount it made fit perfectly into it....so now it is the designated watergate salad bowl. ;) Thanks for watching and commenting! Caren
