@annak25755 жыл бұрын
Really interesting that you use a pinch of 20/20/20 as an all purpose solution for both deciduous and evergreens! As a newbie to bonsai, there's so much confusing and contradictory information out there on this topic, but your results speak volumes! Thanks again Nigel :)
@TheBonsaiZone5 жыл бұрын
Yes, all the information out there can drive you crazy. I try and experiment a bit, but it is hard to know what works and what doesn't. There are so many variables involved in growing bonsai. My methods may not be the optimum solution, and I may slowly adjust my soil and methods in the future, but I think they are at least in the right ballpark!
@BonsaiTalk7 жыл бұрын
From one enthusiast to another, WATERING IS ONE OF THE MOST DIFFICULT THINGS TO MASTER WITH BONSAI, amen to that! You know what japanese Bonsai Masters, Nursery Masters says to the students when they first set their foot on the property? - How much do you know about watering.. - Can you water? Great episode, i would never ever use chemical fertilizer, ever, but thats just me and how i roll, we all find our methods.
@TheBonsaiZone7 жыл бұрын
I have used organic fertilizer and added organic matter in the soil and you do get good results also. So much depends on the weather and other factors, it's just hard to say what works best. I always put the date on my videos, ten years from now, I may water and fertilize in a totally different way! Thanks for the bonsai talk!
@BonsaiTalk7 жыл бұрын
You are most welcome mr. saunders
@rickl.orchids7 жыл бұрын
......although organic has a better sound, and is more safer....you get more control with chemical fertilizers vs organic.....the breakdown of organics is erratic and dependent on temps, bacteria, moisture etc. etc.........chemical mixes are more controllable. Example.....You can increase or decrease the absorption of individual minerals, by tweaking the ph up or down. you can control the ppm of the solution during mixing, etc etc....... In bonsai .....control is everything.......I can never get enough Bonsai Talk !!

Good bonsai soil makes watering easier, the excess water just drains out and leaves the soil at a good humidity level for root growth. You do have to water more frequently as the soil also dries out more quickly.

If it's good enough for you , it's good enough for me. I'm ordering a watering can! I have several young nursery stock conifers that I have performed initial pruning and shaping on. I currently water them with the shower like spray nozzle from the hose, however I like the thought of taking the guess work out of fertilizing by adding it to water. It's somewhat comforting to know that as man as experienced as yourself can have so many thriving trees of different species using the same simple method. I've read so much about what you 'should' do regarding fertilising that it's now nice to think that's all obviously just personal preference.
@TheBonsaiZone7 жыл бұрын
I think if you can use rain water also, it will keep your plants much healthier!

Hi Nigel, thank you for another informative video. To add my two cents, I do water my trees every evening thoroughly but as the temperatures are going higher, I will be deploying my automated watering system soon and set it up to two times per day as the evaporation gets really nasty during full summer. I am also adding chemical fertilizer to my watering can regularly, though I must say that I don't put it there every day, but at least twice a week and I use higher dosage than you, so it might even out in the end.
@TheBonsaiZone7 жыл бұрын
Yes that sounds good also. The average temperature here in the summer is 28 C, but we do get some warm days in the high 30's.

You are probably thinking of Hydro- and Aeroponics as alternatively better method, which indeed provides a better nutrient distribution. But those alternative methods also have the disadvantage of easily killing a lot of trees at the same time, if you just make a single mistake. I meant that this is probably the best conventional way of fertilizing, and your results prove that your method works very well. While other methods, like Walter Palls method for example also work really good, but he wastes a lot of nutrients and flushes them into the environment. In case you did not yet know about it here you can listen to him explaining it : watch?v=Q11HMWatCxY

Your videos are incredibly informative. As someone who has started with bonsai a couple months ago I love your videos. I want to ask though if you have a delonix regia/ flamboyant bonsai and a dream catcher/ kolkwitzia amibilis? Those are my 2 most favorite bonsai and would love to hear/ see your thoughts on them? Everybody I have spoken to keeps saying that the delonix is a terrible bonsai subject, but in one video I watched of yours, you said that a person should just do what they want and explore the unusual options. I have learnt quite a lot watching your videos especially about trunk chopping and various other techniques. I just recently watched your video about the ficus benjamina operation with the areal routes and that was fascinating. Anyway I look forward to more and more of your videos.

When I was working in a different city, I would water my trees well in the evening, work all day and then water as soon as I got home from work in the afternoon. I would then water again later in the evening. All the trees survived well, but some would get a little droopy in the hot afternoon sun. Watering three times a day is ideal for most of the trees, but not absolutely necessary,

Hello, Nigel! I've decided to go with the mix-in fertilizing method as you show here, but am confused how the fertilizer dose is meant to be divvied up between the trees. You have dozens of trees - how many times do you mix up a new can with fertilizer to get them all? I've got less than a dozen and a similar size haws can. One, two, three batches in my case to achieve a proper fertilizing? Curious to hear your thoughts :) Thanks!

My ficus bonsai tree is in a container without drainage. I had it for two years. Repotted it once. Each winter I take it inside and each spring it is outside under a patio roof to protect it from too much rain. I don't prune it's leaves because it doesn't have a full head of leaves. :( What I would like is for my bonsai tree to grow more leaves. Hopefully, if I fertilizer it. It will grow more leaves. What would you recommend? Thanks.

Hi Nigel! Nice to see videos about all aspects of growing bonsai, even the seemingly simple things like watering and such. Also, i love how the larch forest is looking. Plantings with a lot of moss like that are absolutely sexy, lol. Anyway, I just got a new Japanese holly (Ilex crenata helleri) this last week. I wondered if you had any Ilex or if you had any advice on them specifically. It's too late to repot it, I think, but what's a good time to prune them? Or is it not to late to repot...? In other news, idk if you remember the video of me repotting a lemon tree, but that spent a little while after I repotted it just doing nothing. I guess it had to recover from the operation i did on it... But anyways, good news is I finally see new growth starting on those little buds where the leaves join the branch, so it is recovering! Also, I put some moss on it's soil, like I said, I just like the look of moss.
@TheBonsaiZone7 жыл бұрын
Good to hear your lemon tree is growing again. I find they grow in spurts, they sit dormant and then suddenly start growing, then go back to being dormant for a while. I don't have a holly, I know Hong in our club has one. You could ask him on Facebook. See the link on the channel page. Thanks, the Larch forest is going to need some landscape work soon, it's getting overgrown!

How frequent do you fertilise bonsai trees thank you
@NikhilYadav-tl4hb5 жыл бұрын
Hi nigel, i have a question. Do i need to give fertilizer to the bonsai tree even after using fertilizers in the potting mix. For example my potting mix is 50% gravel and brick chips, 20% garden soil and 15 + 15 of cow dung manure and leaf mould. So do i still need to provide additional fertilizer?
@TheBonsaiZone5 жыл бұрын
You probably don't need additional fertilizer with the mix you are using for at least the first year. Once the organic matter is broken down, it may require new soil or the addition of more fertilizer. Organic fertilizer needs warm temperatures for the organic matter to be broken down by fungus and micro organisms. In a cold climate organic matter is less effective.

Nigel, I have a 'Ficus Ginseng Microcarpa' and don't know when is the best time to water. Could you please tell me How and When do I know it's time to water? My soil is dry on the top but if I push my pinky finger in 0.5 inch in, then I feel cool moist soil. Could you please explain how should i water it? Thank you

Hi Nigel I planted 8 different trees to make into bonsais from seeds in early April most of them are coming out very well but I was wondering do I use fertilizer now or wait a year. I use Miracle Grow for my plants outside and some inside but this is my first time doing bonsais.

Do you fertilize your succulents as well? I've heard that they do nsed only very very little fertilizer. Just wondering.

Hi Nigel, can you advice what is proportion of the fertilizer per amount of water? A pinch of fertilizer for 1 liter of water? does it make sense if we put 1 tea spoon for a gallon of water? Thanks.

it is the summer here. the plants grow much slower because of the heat ( this week average is 45c). i would like to use your method but do you think it is safe to fertilize that often when the plants are trying thier best to survive? thank you for your great videos
@TheBonsaiZone7 жыл бұрын
Maybe not for those temperatures, or you could cut the amount of fertilizer to half a pinch, then feed only once a day.

Hi Nigel, We have a well for domestic water use.It's about 200-250 feet seep.Is this water OK instead of rain water? I'm not positive but I think we have a lot of acid rain and I would hate to kill my first bonsai! Tom

hi Nigel , sorry but I have a question for you Because you do it already , I will ask you , how to do . I just received my ficus religiousa seeds , and want to know how do you do for the germination ? Thanks already Erich from Belgium
@TheBonsaiZone7 жыл бұрын
Here is a quote from exotic seeds..... No pre-treatment is required. Cover the seeds with 1/4" of your soil mixture. Keep damp soil, not soaking wet. Keep pot in warm situation 20°C/68°F, 24°C/75°F. Germination can take several months. It can be a more, don't give up. - See more at: www.rarexoticseeds.com/en/ficus-religiosa-seeds-bodhi-tree-bo-sacred-fig.html#sthash.0bOCOum6.dpuf Good luck!

Hi Nigel, i have one question. If i only can get a liquid fertilizer (21-11-11 is the maximun amount of NPK i get), how can i dosify everyday? Thanks!
@TheBonsaiZone4 жыл бұрын
That fertilizer should be fine, just watch your growth, if the new growth starts to get too rapid and the tree is losing it's tight inter-nodes between leaves, then you can cut back the fertilizer. You can always supplement your feeding with some potassium and phosphorous if you think the trees health is out of balance.

Hallo Nigel. Advice about fertilazing when you transplanting bonsai and cutting roots. Is 11-40-11 good for bonsai, or? Thanks
@TheBonsaiZone5 жыл бұрын
The tree should be allowed to grow and become very vigorous before root pruning. The tree shouldn't need any fertilizer to help it recover, it can rely on stored up energy to grow new roots. The fertilizer is needed later to feed these new roots. I feed right away after re potting with a very, very dilute amount of 20-20-20 fertilizer and only because it is easier to water everything with the same treatment. The 11-40-11 will do fine, but keep it very diluted.

I use very hard (19°dH) tap water for everything, Nitrophoska special and bat litter as short- and long-term fertilizers. Works quite well, except for the leaves getting some white (calcareous) spots. Watering is not _that_ difficult with modern (mineral) soil: Just _water thorougly_. Don't you think?
@TheBonsaiZone7 жыл бұрын
It is hard to over water with a good porous bonsai soil, but also easy to have the tree dry out. I get terrible lime build up with tap water, even the roots get a white coating, which isn't good for the health of the tree!
@andrewspar4367 жыл бұрын
You are quite right, but I have no rain water available. Nevertheless: Watering with modern soil is no science anymore, as one just waters intensely at every occasion without any danger of root-rot as with "regular" soil.
@alexandreleblanc3247 жыл бұрын
Antony Spar that what I was thinking first but I discovered that roots grow less when they always in a wet environment. so the top grow less too...got better results letting the soil dry a bit...
@andrewspar4367 жыл бұрын
No objection there. What I meant was, that while there always is potential for optimization, at least there is no risk of overwatering anymore, as with "classic" soil. This takes a lot of the risk out of bonsai.

Hi Nigel, I love your videos. I have learned so much from you. So for that, I thank you. I'm trying to nail down a feeding regimen for my trees and I'm not sure how much fertilizer to use. I'm worried about burning my trees. Do you know what the "ppm" or "EC" reading is of your nutrient solution? This would help me out tremendously..

you only use a drainage layer of large particles in the bottom of the pot in some of your repottings, how do you decide which trees need it?
@TheBonsaiZone7 жыл бұрын
I only use a drainage layer in tall pots so I don't use too much bonsai soil. You want your roots to grow shallow and not deep into the pot.
