I am enjoying seeing some of this gun come back to what little is left. I wonder if a Dental kit like a dentist uses would help with the fine details. Just go slow & easy.. I would love to hear the many stories of all the Civil War relics. I guess we will just have to guess. Please Keep us posted.

What a great find!! I'm no professional but I have used plain old White Distilled Vinegar to get rid of rust build up on old ax heads and steel tools like old crow bars etc and it works great. Soak submerged for 24 hours and then brush with a brass brush that is not real stiff. It won't get rid of everything but its amazing what it does do. Its just a mild 5% acid solution that is safe to use without gloves and mask like so many other acids. .

I would halt removal of surface debris now. The trigger area already looks worse. Most of what you are looking at are oxides. The actual base metal is as this as wire in most places. I think you should concentrate on replacing the moisture with hot wax. The gun will never look better than it does now. Arresting the oxidation, not removing surface rust, should be you goal now. I have watched relics that looked good when I found them under water crumble into dust.

After you finding this one and I think it was Daniel finding the barrel in the water close by, it makes me wonder what is up on the bank in this area that may have been lost or discarded. Maybe next time you hunt that area, you could take a few minutes and search the upper bank. It could be interesting!

Have you contacted the folks who did the work on the Monitor or Hunley for advice? There is also a sternwheeler that was dug up in a farmers field that had sunk ... the name eludes me at the moment. But those are three sources for preservation techniques and advice. You've a marvelous piece there. Go slowly and wisely. Get some dental tools ... take your time. The concretion will come off.

I have a question. If you know what kind of gun it is, have you obtained photos of a fully restored example? You could use it as a guide to know what should be chiseled off and what should stay. It's no secret that as caked up as it is, it would be easy to break off too much accidentally, not knowing exactly what's under the crustiness. With... Oh, forget it. As I was writing this, mentioned the same idea. It's a good idea - act on it.

Hey 'Bama....Man you had me tensing up with every wack of that hammer...I was waiting on the whole guard to break loose, or that thin Butt Stock to break.... And from what I've seen in your videos of it.... That Stock looks like it has a huge chunk taken out of it,, maybe from a Bullet hit or piece of shrapnel,,, And thus it was discarded in the river,, Or like you said, 'Might have fallen out of a wagon"....Whatever the case...Be easy with that thing while cleaning the rust.... Remember, (Once you take it off,, You can't put it back on)...Later man....
