The lovely thing for me about not being required at the rehearsal when attending a family wedding this autumn was having time to reconnect with far-away kin who also love heritage train rides. The Waterloo Central Railway's [waterloocentra...] "Heritage Hopper" ticket transported us through spectacular Mennonite farmland, with views aplenty and knowledgeable and friendly volunteer conductors.
Run by the Southern Ontario Locomotive Restoration Society, all proceeds from the modestly priced tickets go to restoring old trains. As soon as we trundled through their yard in the town of St. Jacobs, I knew that I would need to cut my time exploring that community in order to explore their rail yard full of more old cars than I realized they might have.
What I didn't know is that a couple of great restoration volunteers would not only welcome my train-geek investigations but also let me climb into a car in the midst of detailed restoration and then show me the workshop and classic steam train currently being restored and recertified for future rides on the line.
They're a great organization, full of just the best sort of train fans, serving the future by recovering the past. Currently, they have a fundraising campaign on the go to rescue another steam locomotive [waterloocentra...], so if you can, please help them reach their modest goal by Christmas.
I meant it when I let those volunteers know I'd be back. This is a train I will ride every chance I get! Enjoy!
