Ever since I saw the 1978 Watership Down movie as a child I’ve been captivated by Richard Adam’s story of a band of rabbits in search of a new home. The film is excellent too, but, it’s the novel itself which really struck a chord with me.
If you haven’t read the book (and you really should) you may not be aware that the journey the rabbits took, and all the places they went to actually are real locations in the rolling Hampshire countryside just south of Newbury in Berkshire.
As I happen to live very close by to the area I thought it would be fun to visit Watership Down country for myself, and see all of the famous locations that have lived in my mind for over forty years.
All movie clips copyright the Watership Down Estate.
Please note: many of the locations are on strictly private and inaccessible land, and it was necessary to supplement with previously acquired footage several times. Thank you especially to Simon Jones at Film Locations UK (on KZbin) for footage of the Railways Arches.
