The message of Watership Down is more pertinent today than it was 30 years ago when this film was released. This film comes from the tail end of an era where it was thought that it is ok to teach children about, and prepare them for, the harsh realities of life - instead of protecting them, sheltering them, and raising them to be mindless consumers with no capacity for independent thought.

I was around 6 yrs old when I saw this with my cousins. My mom rented it thinking it was just another cartoon for kids. I remember her and my aunt exchanging horrified looks when this part of the movie was on, but they were too stunned to turn it off. Lol... it was so scary and to this day I couldn't forget these scenes. This clip refreshes the memories further haha... man...

On my 7th birthday in 1978 my parents took me to see this film. Apparently I didn't stop crying for a week afterwards, it didn't help that as a birthday present they bought me the LP which I played over and over again in my bedroom afterwards, blubbering the whole way through the soundtrack for hours on end. Even now I can't hear 'Bright Eyes' without flinching. My mother tells me that I said "I'm never going to be happy again" ! Oh dear.

It's probably the most beautiful animated film I have ever seen, for many reasons. It still gives me the creeps though. Some might say that's the beauty of it? I made it this way to reflect my own feelings of this film from when I was a child, because when I was about 7 or 8, it used to scare the crap out of me while still being one of my favourite films! :P

SOMEONE PLEASE DO A REMAKE OF THIS MOVIE BEFORE I DIE!! Make it with CGI realism and stay true to the story! Don't Disney it up! It would be epic on the scale of Lord of the Rings or Star Wars! No, it's not for kids! It's a tail of survival and friendship. The author used characters and events that he experienced in WWII.
Nope. in this day'n age they'd only ruin it, like every other re-make.

May I ask what the scene with the rabbit heads is about? I am really curious
@Dan-ky5es10 жыл бұрын
If by the rabbit heads trapped in the warren you mean... it's basically a psychedelic representation of how construction workers filled in the burrows to start building, however all the rabbits were still down there so they basically died a slow suffocation and couldn't get out at all. In their desperate efforts to find a way out they lodged and crammed between and on top of one another just to try and breath as much air as possible. Hope this helped haha.
@c.d.silbernagel9 жыл бұрын
You forgot to mention that their phantom-like forms are representations of the gas that is being flooded into the Warren to kill them off. It drives the animals crazy. In the novel, that scene is far more graphic and heart wrenching.
