Here's the thing: This was never meant as a children's movie but just because people are stupid and think cartoon = for kids, most of us ended up watching this when we were kids. Whether that's good or not, though, I can't really decide. I know I was terrified by most scenes, especially the heads, stuck in the underground tunnel and squished together and the scene that stuck with me the most is the field being covered in blood. In fact this is how I found this film again recently - by searching for a film with a field being covered in blood involving rabbits. As a child I didn't understand any of the political/sociological messages of the film. I just remembered the mentally tormenting scenes. But now, as a 24-year old I feel oddly glad I've seen this film at such a young age. I fear that if I had seen it now it wouldn't have had such an impact on me. And I enjoy watching the disturbing scenes in a weirdly masochistic kind of way, because I take pleasure in gnawing at my own childhood traumas. In any case I can't help but feel that this film has contributed to rabbits being my absolute most favourite animal! I see something deep and tragic when I look at a rabbit and I'm pretty sure this film is the reason why.

_"I take pleasure in gnawing at my own childhood traumas."_ I've been doing that for at least a few hours, so far for me it's been _The Never Ending Story_ (sphinx v. knight scene), the cover of the movie _Demon Child 666_, and currently I (like you have done with this film), am googling for a movie that involves the antagonists turning child-prisoners into slim-balls. I think this has to do with some subconscious human need to have a rematch with their former fears.
@KarrieDreammind510 жыл бұрын
Ashley Casey Have you found that film you were searching for? I like your explanation for why we're doing it. I think it's true - I know these things scared me as a child and I like to convince myself that I am grown up and strong now and that I can overcome those demons from the past. I think I also like the psychological idea that facing those 'demons' again helps me understand certain aspects of my own psyche and understand myself better.
@ashleycasey209310 жыл бұрын
Karrie Dreammind Exactly. And unfortunately no, I haven't. When I googled the synopsis of the movie I at least found that there were others looking for the same film too.
@KarrieDreammind510 жыл бұрын
Ashley Casey It's very strange not to be able to find something on the internet nowadays.... I feel like I want to help you because this is an important quest. :p Have you tried searching for other details you can remember about that movie?
@ashleycasey209310 жыл бұрын
Karrie Dreammind Yep, it was a movie about children (as far as I remember), being imprisoned in jails, and their adult rulers shooting this gun at them, which turned them into a large slime ball. I've only watched parts of it, because at the time, I was at a babysitter's house. The most vivid scenes I can recall was some kid running down the ail, escaping from his prision saying "I don't want be a slim ball" then a adult blasting him with a gun, and he _was_ a slime ball. Gross, and weird, but it scared me nonetheless.

shiawasekappukekiful Movies like "Animatrix," "Akira," and the like would never be mistaken for anything but adult animation. They're even appropriately rated as such by the MPAA, earning a PG-13 or an R rating. Movies like "Watership Down," on the other hand, can easily be seen as children's fare at first. "Watership Down" is merely rated PG. That happens to be the point; an animated movie about rabbits would seem cute, but this film is violently graphic. But, just in case anybody thinks that was a criticism ... "Watership Down" is actually a very good movie. Just bear in mind that "parental guidance suggested" really does mean what it says with this film.

This cartoon is an eye opener for anyone born from the 90s onwards... I was in born in 1980 and I remember this used to come on every easter... at sucha young age I watched this film it used to come on about 1pm for every child to see... it was so violent and deep... and sad... But I honestly think us kids who watched this adult themed movie as children probably helped us mature that little bit faster... come to think of it all the cartoons of the 80s were very mature.... Thundercats,Mask,Ulyses,Centurions,Visionaries etc real men were made in this decade... we wonder why the men of today are soft... we were brought up on this cartoon and Thundercats while these poor kids grow up on Sponge bob.... and god knows what else... I sometimes wonder who was responsible for the sudden change in Cartoons? because it changed so drastically yet ive never seen any report for the sudden switch.... anyone remember "The story teller" what a brilliant program that was!

Can someone tell me what's so bad about blood and some slightly darkish themes? I mean, the only reason you guys think this movie is "cruel" and "horrible" is because today, about EVERY kid's movie is so sugar-coated you already know the "amazing" (yet sometimes untalented) "Hero" will win without even a bruise! Also, I'm so happy that there is darker themes. Without them, this movie would be boring, instead, it seems AWESOME.

+alexis olender even for its time it was pretty shocking, considering how "animation with talking animals" generally was equated to Bambi levels of innocence.

It would only be shocking for people who didn't decide to see what the book was like ( they don't have to read it just check it out ) or see any descriptions on what the movie/book is. And yes there was ways to see descriptions without the internet.

What a classic this is! Watched it when i was about 6 at first school, it was scary! Its such a deep, complex and surreal film that i dont think is suitable for young kids. The warped scary black rabbit, the depressing bright eyes, the meadow running red with blood, the rabbit caught in the snare, the dog running around savaging all the rabbits near the end, and the brutal fight between bigwig and the general! This film was rammed to the hilt with controversy, but i still love it and im 32!

@anneelk906611 жыл бұрын
So, when an animation isn't sweet, nice and cute, it makes it automatically a horror?
@dtjackson164711 жыл бұрын
Anne Elk It's ok when daffy duck gets hit by a steam-roller, gets flattened, and then gets right back up and chasing after his assailant, or when Tom gets tricked by Jerry into consuming TNT and having a hole appear in his stomach while stars are rotating around his head and his eyes are rolling around. That's not cute, but it's not horror either; its slap-stick. But when a cartoon shows a rabbit getting ripped limb from limb by a hound, and then throwing its blood-soaked corpse to the floor... or when it shows the dirt being thrown down the bunnies holes so that all of the bunnies are crushed together, their eyes glowing red as they moan in horror, circling around each other, knowing that they're doomed to remain their forever, underground, without air, and without any hope of escape... that is a horror cartoon.
@anneelk906611 жыл бұрын
DT Jackson Ok, please tell me, to which age group is Watership Down intended. Looney Tunes, Tom&Jerry and other average violent cartoones are being made for kids, who are able to understand, that the world doesn't only consist of nice and beautiful things. WD is a film for mature people, in which animation is just a form of telling the story. For Cthulhu's sake, the film is not about rabbits! I freaking hate it, when people reduce every animation to a children's production. It's just unfair to many masterpieces. Also, would you call the animated adaptation of George Orwell's Animal Farm a "horror cartoon", because cute, talking animals die in it? Ps. Forgive me for my bad English.
@dtjackson164711 жыл бұрын
If a film scares a large percentage of the people that watch it, then it's a horror film. If it scares little or none of the people that watch it, then it's not a horror film. Tom and Jerry scares almost none of the people that watch it, so it's not a horror cartoon. Watership Down scares a high percentage of the people that watch it, so it is a horror film. I wouldn't call something a horror film because cute animals die in it. I'd call it a horror film if it scares the living daylights out of a lot of people, as Watership Down did. If you don't agree that Watership Down scared a lot of people, then go through the comments in this video and see for yourself. As for me thinking that Watership Down is only about rabbits, what on earth did I say to imply that I think it did? I'm aware that there are some subtle messages that the film is conveying.

I think I remember stumbling across this film when I was seven in a video store. I was quite amused by the cover and asked my mom if we could rent it. Yeah, you know what she said to me? "No, we can't because it looks too YOUNG for you!" After finally seeing the film at thirteen, I reflected on that memory and felt...well... I really didn't know what to feel!

It isn't meant to be. It's more teen to adult movie. People thought a bunny cartoon was gonna be kid-friendly. Nope.
