Thanks Peter. I've only had my 7300 for a few days, so still learning. I'd played with the Fil1, 2 and 3, but your suggestions for them are very worthwhile. I hadn't found the tone controls yet, though, so I'll be having a further play later. Thanks again for sharing your thoughts, ideas and knowledge.

Peter, I just watched your video on "Better Receiver Reception - Lower Noise - Demo with IC-7300" a few weeks ago and tried your suggested settings on both my IC-R8600 and my Drake R8. I was amazed at the improvement it made on both receivers. It's counter-intuitive that lowering RF GAIN would improve reception and lower noise but it really works! I'm listening to and enjoying broadcast stations and ham operators that were too hard to hear before I tried your suggested setting adjustments. Thank you very much for your informative video. I'm now enjoying both of my receivers much more and I'm listening to signals that were too hard to hear before I tried your adjustments. Thank You!

This is the sort of information a fellow like me really needs. I have an ICOM 703 QRP transceiver. I love the set, but often wonder how to push the performance to its maximum. Well, here is the answer! I will give it a try! I' am most honored to have the opinion of one of the founding members of the best electronics firms in England share his insight. (it also lets me know YOU are a true lover of the Ham Bands and are interested in a way that is beyond just Economics) Only a true radio fan could address the ART of listening and the art of optimization of ones equipment so competently. Thanks. I also want to mention that, as a medical student in the 1990's I purchased a SONY 7600 DX receiver from Waters and Stanton when I was going through medical school...it never let me down........all over the World....Thanks S&W...and Peter specifically !

Thanks for this excellent presentation on improving receiver reception by lowering noise. I just accepted delivery of an IC-7300 and was shocked by the relatively high receiver noise. My previous modern experience was with Elecraft rigs which were relatively quiet. Also the Xiegu G90 can be gotten very quiet. All that not withstanding, my noise reduction efforts on the IC-7300 were futile until I watched your video utilizing this radio. I followed along, making the setting changes you demonstrated, and the 7300 is now more pleasant to listen to. Thanks, 73, all the best. E. Mayes Kendrick, N1RKA

Interesting ! Sometimes necessity is the mother of invention ! I made a cardboard reflector for the up firing speaker on an old Icom IC 740, and can attest to it making a huge difference ! And was not as fatiguing to listen to for long periods. I placed a piece of tap on the back edge, where the feed horn, for lack of a better discription, met the top of the radio, just past the back of the speaker. That allowed me to adjust the angle from which the sounds were launched ! And was amazed at what it did for changing the tone coming out of the small speaker. So much, was I impressed with how it worked, I stumbled onto a plastic version on eBay, that attaches by three magnets, and purchased one ! Funny how sometimes something so simple can make a great difference. I since have wondered why radio manufacturers haven't designed a trap door of sorts, that could be stored flat while the radio is not being used, then simply lifted into place once operational ! Also, you made mention of the RF gain control. Through the years, I have experimented with turning off the AGC, on radio's that offered the option, and have turned up the AF gain, and used the RF gain instead ! And have found that useful under varying conditions ! Since it has been a number of years since I have purchased a modern radio, I have often wondered how much better the receiver's have become ! Thanks for your video ! '73

You can also add tuning stubs used as bandpass filters when placed correctly in parallel to the feed-line. I built a noise canceller kit from VK5TM It's an amazing design if you don't mind twiddling knobs. If your good at manual matching you will also be good at noise cancelling with this box of tricks. I built mine into a metal tin for lipton earl grey tea. Another thing i have is an MFJ noise tuner. It's a kind of parametric EQ for your speaker, i have yet to try it but it probably works quite well.

Sounds like the DSP function works on a similar principle to the old but very effective Dolby B noise reduction system on ferric compact cassettes, which used the method of boosting the higher frequencies during the recording process and then reducing them on playback using the dolby system and thus reducing the most noticeable frequency range of tape hiss. Great video👍🏻

Very interesting. I must play with the audio LPF & HPF on mine. Two points I would make; I thought the purpose of the twin PBT was to mitigate adjacent channel interference. Secondly, if you bring up the audio scope screen, the audio waterfall will show the audio bandwidth and noise level very well.
@watersstanton3 жыл бұрын
You are correct about PBT. However, adjacent channel problems can be noise as well and any narrowing or movement also has a direct affect on noise. That's why when operating CW in a narrow bandwidth, the noise level drops. Thanks for watching. 73 Peter.

On a direct conversion SDR like the KX3, does changing the IF bandwidth (mine is now set to 0.25 to 2.0 kHz reflecting your audio bandwidth) result in the same result as changing the AF bandwidth anyway? I guess using the IF instead of AF to reduce bandwidth of the entire system has the advantage that the AGC loop also benefits. KX3 has AF equaliser.
