god watching this made me realize a lot of things that flew over my head when first watching sunshine.. chika's self-hatred is so well disguised as blind passion and admiration for muse you don't really take scenes where she breaks down much to a heart. but chika as a character hits a lot closer to home when you have in mind the fact that she's always running away from herself. from the average monster she's named herself after, from the numerous failed attempts at being something greater than herself, from the deep-rotten fear that she'll never find a shine of her own. that's why she was so determined on being a school idol, so she can be someone else-someone brighter, someone that can't feel ashamed of who they are. so once her first failure hits her in the face, you know why she breaks down, and you feel her frustration. she's facing herself again, the chika that will never get to be anything in her life other than painfully average. i know what that feels like, to realize that you might as well never be the one you so desperately dream to become, and striving towards it might as well be pointless. i've been having a newfound love for chika recently and honestly you settled that down;; ty for this 🍊

I can't even begin to describe how important Chika is to me. Throughout a majority of 2019, I was in a really dark time of my life and I felt more helpless than I'd ever felt in my entire life. Like Chika, I never felt like I'd be able to achieve anything and that I'd always be never good enough no matter how hard I tried. Chika taught me that no matter what, just because you can fail doesn't mean you're destined for a life of failure. Even if I don't know who I'll be in 10-20 years, that's ok. Life will take me there, and things will get better so long as I don't lose faith in myself. I owe my new mindset where I feel wiser, happier and hopeful for the future all to her. Chika is my favorite protagonist of all time, not just because she's a great character, but because her words will always be part of the foundation of my very self as long as I live. It makes me so happy to see her get the praise she deserves in this vid rather than being cast aside as "Honoka 2.0" by most fans. For that, I want to thank you. Keep it up, I'm rooting for ya!

I like how LLS is a story of failure and resilience, and enjoying the good moments in life when hey come by. We never know what the future holds. The raw emotions in this video are incredible. I like how you covered everything about Chika including her normal monster title. Chika represents all of us out there who think very little of themselves yet still try to make something of themselves even if they constantly fail (I’m one of these people). This is honestly why Chika stood out to me the best in Aqours (and why Aqours and Sunshine's storyline really got to me; Sunshine was a literal ray of the sun with its subversions of the original Love Live, all the while introducing better worldbuilding with a very interesting and unique protagonist AKA our glorious mikan). It's honestly such a crime how underappreciated she was just because everyone defines her with how she handled her friendship with Riko and You. I still wish the writers handled that better because then maybe people would see past that and see more of Chika as a character.

Everybody thinks of Chika as a Honoka 2.0 but in reality, she's much better. As I watched the series for the first time, just like another comment down here, alot of things flew by my head. I want to rewatch the series with a new perspective and definitely love Chika more than I used to. I used to find Chika really annoying because she kept breaking down and calling herself a monster but watching this video made me realise how wrong I was. My view on Chika has changed in so many ways and now she's my new bias. _sorry Rin._ Hopefully the community will realise how much of a relatable and wonderful character Chika is. Anju is also the perfect fit for Chika as she previously doubted herself and seeing that she managed to overcome the challenges like how Chika did makes me admire both Chika and Anju even more. I strive to overcome the difficulties in life and having Chika as my new role model makes me want to work harder.

I'm really glad I got to see this. Everybody talks about how the first Love Live was better, but I always beg to differ on the basis of Chika (and a parallel growth with Riko but that's for another time.) You really hit all the right bars. I was always sad watching the show because Chika always expressed some form of self-deprecation when thinking about herself. I always thought it wasn't meant to be a "look what a normal person can do" but "look what a normal person can become" kind of thing. Even if Chika hesitated, even towards the end, to think of herself as anything more than normal, she became someone amazing, someone who people couldn't help but rely on, to follow, to trust. I'm not great with words, but again thanks for making this. I feel like most people didn't fully grasp what Chika went through in the show and this should help them. Really great video.

Well after hitting the replay button like 3 o 4 times, here's my serious comment. This is my favorite video, not only because it's about Chika, but because I feel the same, and that's what made me a huge Love Live fan. Nobody expects such things in the series, nobody thinks there such a great protagonist here, and there's even people who still thinks she's like Honoka. Chika is, by far, the best fictional character i've ever seen, the most realistic and well written. And yeah, thanks to her I started to chase my dreams even if I think I'm just normal. What I find strange is that even after this video, I hate her. I watched School Idol Project and it brought me to tears. Repeatedly. I learned of Muse the month after they disbanded, but got super excited when Aqours was announced. Then I heard the first single, and it didn’t do anything to me. The first song I heard from Muse was Snow Halation (through SiivaGunner’s Stone Halation), and it made me watch the show. Aqours’ first single didn’t. But that was ok, I still went in to Sunshine with an open mind! I wasn’t sold on Muse until I watched episode 1. Honoka saw her school closing and fainted. Yes her reasoning might have been different in the moment, but she fainted because she loved the school. School Idols weren’t Honoka’s goal, Otonokizaka was. And she believed enough to tell the student council president that she was going to succeed in front of a massive auditorium filled with her failure. She may have seen A-Rise on a screen, but she only became a School Idol because of her love for the school. Sunshine episode 1 goes from Chika watching a Muse concert on a screen straight to “JOIN THE SCHOOL IDOL CLUB!!” There was no reasoning there, it seemed like a plot point just there because it was Love Live. I finished the first episode and, very uncharacteristically, dropped the show. I didn’t feel Sunshine worthy of 3 episodes. After 3 attempts, I finally finished season 1, and my opinions are the same. I see nothing in Chika, I actively hate some of the other characters, I don’t see what everybody else sees.

You're not the only one, I see a lot of people hating Chika, but you're the only one who has a reason and can explain why. I see Honoka as the optimistic leader, who runs forwards and make everyone go her way. Her inspiration was her love for the school and the growing love for school idols. But Chika, despite people calling her Honoka 2, is closer to be the opposite. She keeps pushing the others, but she stays behind. I see her as a better leader because she's always thinking about the others. But yeah, her inspiration looks weird at first, I think the real start is in Ep12. But after rewatching the whole series a LOT of times, I thought "hey, if I were Chika, I would be doing exactly the same thing", I don't need more reasons, after seeing µ's enjoying that so much (and with the fact that Chika is a "normal" girl and all of that) I would love to do something like that. I really suggest you to finish all of Sunshine, and I hope you can enjoy it the most. The first half of the movie was the only moment I saw it pointless, but all the rest, was beautiful. I loved this video so damn much. I understand how Chika feels. I’m a person who wants to be a talented musician, I want to be a band director and I want to be good at the tenor sax. To me I view myself as normal and that I don’t meet my own expectations that I have for myself. Love Live Sunshine and Hibike Euphonium have taught me that I need to create my own path in order to achieve what I want to do and want to be. It sucks not meeting your expectations, feeling like you failed others that believed in you and feeling like you just aren’t good enough and that maybe what you’re doing isn’t meant for you. I’m always fearing that maybe I won’t be good enough one day, that I’ll just keep failing, I’ll never live up to how others thought I would be or that I couldn’t do it and that I never should’ve even tried it. I’ve even lost that passion for music at one point just like Riko but I’m slowly regaining it just like she did. It really does hurt but I have to be like Chika and keep going forward no matter how much I’ll hurt along the way or how bad I’ll feel along that journey. To this day I’m still trying to go forward as much as I can, I’m still gonna try to achieve what I want to achieve, I have to put everything I can into it just like Chika did. Will I hurt and fail along the way? Of course I will but I need to be like her and keep running towards that radiance that she fought so hard for.

When I watched School Idol Project, I didn't think much of it. I liked it well enough, but it never stuck with me much beyond being a silly fun series. As such I gave Sunshine a watch while not having super high expectations for it, but Chika's character immediately resonated with me. Her character arc felt fresh and relatable, and her admiration for everyone around her in turn made me appreciate the series as a whole more. Through my continued watching of both seasons and the movie of Sunshine and repeated rewatches, plus experiencing all the different media centered around Aqours, I got truly engrossed in Love Live as a whole, and it's now a major part of my life. My enthusiasm for Love Live is also what got me to get back to creative pursuits after quietly dropping them for a significant portion of my life, and I'm writing and drawing now more than ever before. All because of what a fantastic character Chika is and how her doubts and worries spoke to me. Thanks for making this video and articulating all that makes her so good.

what attracted me to love live, was chika. First of all, thank you for doing this video! It was nicely explained I didn't notice it was 20min long lol What I love the most of aquors is that they didn't get to save the school (don't get me wrong. I don't wish that for anyone). By doing that, they forced them to change their mindsets. Chika believed she HAD TO be an idol and save her school as muse's did, so by losing the most precious thing to her, she was forced to face reality. She went from "I gotta save the school to be like them" to "I gotta keep going to let everyone know I'll always be proud of MY school". At first I didn't care much about Chika, she was (to me) a Honoka wannabe. It wasn't until that episode that I fully understood what she meant during the whole series. Also, I believe her CV also struggled with the famous backflip thing. I almost cried watching the video of a concert (wich had documentary stuff) when other memebers said to her it was okay to fail, because they know she did well during rehersals. And that has stucked with me for a while. Love Live is important to me, I wouldn't be able to express how much but it surely has a place in my heart

This is why I enjoy Sunshine more than school idol project. I feel for Chika, I had many encounters of chances where I can be talented. I was given swimming lessons, but never became an athlete, I was taught how to play golf, but I gave up because I couldn’t drive like Tiger Woods, I spent my entire junior high getting better at math but I ended it at being a little above average, I was taught how to play the piano but I outright hated it because I knew I was just normal. I ended up regretting not pursuing these when I entered senior high. I was pissed that people around me could do better than me. that’s when I encountered Love Live! Late in my junior high years, both SIP and Sunshine, I never gave it too much thought but my otaku Friends look downed on me for enjoying Sunshine more than SIP. But I just couldn’t help it, I didn’t know why, I just felt it. Then I encountered and that’s when I found the reason why I enjoyed Sunshine more. It was Chika, Chika was alot like me me she tried many things but gave up on it and when she had that fated encounter with muse she began her journey, just like me that was when I came to enjoy drawing, mainly manga, but I wanted to be more so now I have been trying to learn how to draw more than just anime style, I tried doing backgrounds and sketching my view but I am far from my goal and almost everyone in my family preferred I take a more practical job like doctor or engineer but I disagree, I know why they say that, but I won’t give up this time even if I go against them

im not going to cry im not going to cry im not going to fucking cry GODDAMNIT i had noticed from the get-go that chika had a great deal of self-loathing, from calling herself normal over and over again to that breakdown when they got back from tokyo... but i hadn't given it much thought back then, instead focusing on the other members and how they improved. that exactly proved chika's thoughts of normalcy, of how she doesnt shine at all compared to everyone else around her. now though? god do i have an ever eternal love for takami chika and how she tries so hard despite not knowing how things are going to turn out for her, how despite not having confidence in her own abilities, she helps others around her grow and improve and be the best versions of themselves. people always call her a honoka copy, a rip-off, but normal monster takami chika is so, so far from recklessly passionate and self-confident kousaka honoka. the video already made most of the points regarding honoka and chika's differences; how honoka pulls everyone forward while chika pushes everyone from the back. but another thing they differ in is their feelings towards school idols. honoka at first felt that school idols were an answer to her problem (same as chika, but with an entirely different problem) and nothing more. she wanted to be an idol for the sole reason of saving their school. so when honoka found out that due to muse's great popularity and success, even without winning love live like in their original plan, that they could still save the school, she wanted to stop all activities and disband the group since they had achieved their primary goal. of course, her feelings had changed when muse decided to talk to their leader, but the fact remains that honoka saw being a school idol as a solution to a problem, so that when the problem was solved, they could stop. moreover, when honoka realized she loved school idols and loved being one, she became one of the leaders of the school idol revolution, pulling every school idol in japan forward. chika, by comparison, had absolutely no motivation such as the school closing to form an idol group. instead, she wanted to be a school idol in the hopes of becoming something more than what she was, something more than being normal. she saw school idols as a way to run away from her current self and shine just as brightly as the others she saw around her. when faced with the reality that it just wasn't that easy to shine amongst a sea of diamonds, she was also faced with the reality that she has once again failed because she was too normal to shine. she blamed herself for the failure because everyone around her was radiant but her, and that was what caused them to fail. that wasnt the case of course, but to chika, that was 100% the case. if aqours hadn't been there, who knows what would have happened during that breakdown. honoka shone and all chika wanted was to be able to shine like her too. this turned into a whole ass essay on takami chika and her surprisingly complex personality but i just needed to let out all of these feelings.

After watching Sunshine I had the courage to join the military to better my life and increase my opportunities. I had an idea of what I want to do but it might change over time because I'm still not too sure. Yohane reigns supreme in the end, but our Normal Monster comes an extremely close second. Now I look where I am. I can travel the world. School free or cheap and I get money for it every year. I got some awesome benefits. I got a stable job, I got money, I got my first car all on my own, and many more things to come. I didn't think I could do it. To top it all off, I got the base I always wanted if I ever joined the Air Force. I look where I am. Stationed in Japan as my first base. I got my extension approved so I get to spend my first 4 years of my operational Air Force career in Japan.

When I started seeing Sunshine, I never paid that much attention to Chika. For me, she was just the needed leader of the story, nothing new, almost as a replica of Honoka. I never saw her character in any other way, but this really brought my eyes to light. Even if there motivations are the same, Honoka and Chika are amazingly different, and I think that's what makes Aqours so special to me. Seeing muse, I thought they were amazing, funny, unique and cool, a legend almost. I feel like Aqours was make to feel more like girls with no chances of winning, like they weren't like muse at all, because muse had there light brighted even at the star. This girls were nothing like them, and i think that's what make me like them more. I think everyone had feel like Chika before (the fact that I'm in that state right now it's why this touch my heart so much), the doubts, the wanting to be someone else, the feeling that you will never acomplishe something bigger because you know your incapable of. That stuff, it's why Chika feels more like you, like me, like everyone. And that's why, i think, I gave a special love for Aqours, more than muse or the girls from project. This was beautiful, thank you for making it.

One of the most captivating things about Love Live Sunshine for me was watching Chika attempt to perform these miracles and these incredibly weighty accomplishments because that was what she thought she needed to do in order to break out of her normality. The need to work such large scale accomplishments without being able to truly see the smaller, yet just as impactful, ones was something beautiful to watch as her journey developed around that. The great video you made really enforced that idea and sums up one of the things that makes Love Live such a great anime series. Mad props to you WatTheWat.
