I met this legend. Humblest person ever to meet. I work at a bank in Sri Lanka. The Great Murali was a client and oneday he visited the bank with his family. I had the chance to see him up close and talk to him in person. I told him how honoured I was to see him in person. His reponse was, "Brother, dont be like this, Im also a normal human being like u." He literary doesnt like being highlighted in public. Trust me. Nobody cant be more humble or kind as a person. Shame it happened cos the guy definitely had a twist in his arm but I think the question was or should have been.. is he having a bent arm before extending to whatever 'straight' would be for him. So.. it was still appropriate to question his delivery

As an Aussie cricket tragic, bravo to Steve for calling BS on this subjective no-ball call on Murali, I winced watching this, not only was it "premeditated" by the umpires, but my heart bled for Murali, the team, and Sri Lanka as a nation. What was most impressive though was Muralis reaction, no tantrums, or hyperbole, which is the mark of a great character, who is playing because he is a servant of the game, not serving his own interests.

Why is Steve speaking about this, 22 years after the incident? No one apart from Arjuna Ranatunga came to the poor fellow's help at the time. Murali was a special bowler with or without the deformity. Just as Shoaib used to be called for chucking, Murali was too. I feel it was the fear of facing these 2 greats which made the umpires and some ex-cricketers at the time to make rubbish calls of chucking to ruin their career.

Murali’s wrist did most of the work. It was a known fact he has a hyper-extension..a medical condition. Hair had an agenda.
@yaeshraj
@yaeshraj 6 жыл бұрын
Murli had a bent elbow that could not fully extend to 180 degrees like normal people. He was hypermobile in the shoulder and wrist joints which is what makes up the bulk of his action. the bent elbow gave the illusion of throwing especially with the hypermobile shoulder joint and wrist. Shoaib Akhtar had hyper extension that went past 180 degrees of extention to about 190-200 degrees which straightened during the delivery phase of the ball. So 200 degrees --> 180 degrees. Because there was around 15-20 degrees of flexion during the delivery of the ball when the arm released the ball, his action was suspected to be illegal. both were eventually cleared as they are not doing what they did willfully or purposefully. It is just their biomechanics being slightly different from the norm. :)

At that time, the maximum that an elbow could be bent by a spinner was 5 degrees and 10 degrees for fast bowlers. ICC found out that almost all the bowlers, especially the fast bowlers, who played the game were exceeding the said limits. If ICC were to ban Murali for chucking because he exceeded the 5 degree limit, they had to follow the same rule and ban most of the bowlers, which would have led to the game becoming extremely non-competitive. Get your facts in order mate..

To say he chucks is absurd and shows a clear ignorance on what he does to get wickets. Leg spin is all in the wrist and Off spin with the fingers, a slightly bent elbow does not aid at all in the delivery.

First time I saw Murali bowling, I thought, "He's chucking it!" I assume some umpires thought the same. But when he proved he can bowl the same deliveries with his arm in a steel brace, for God's sake, it becomes pretty obvious that he can't be chucking it. Unless he found a way to bend steel and bend it back again in the blink of an eye. Surely at this level, umpires should have been aware (or made aware) of this? Also, Steve Waugh's opinions, to my mind, count for a lot more than those of a couple of "here today, gone tomorrow" umpires, perhaps only out after their fifteen minutes of fame?

In a way. it may be unfair to lay all the blame on the umpires, Darrel Hare and Roy Emerson. In an interview, later, Hare explained that the Australian Cricket Board interviewed him just after he had called another bowler for throwing in a match at a lower level and told him that the board appreciated his umpiring and so, would appoint him to stand in his first International match. He understood this as an instruction to call Muralidaran and he did. Subsequently, when he was facing heavy criticism from past cricketing greats, including Ian Botham, Tony Greig, Richie Benaud, etc., he sought the assistance of the same official of the Aussie cricket board but was refused a meeting with him. Clearly, he was wrong in doing it to become a regular umpire on the International stage but the Aussie cricket board bears even greater blame (and, shame) for rigging the umpiring. I don't know whether Emerson was similarly coerced but he really didn't have adequate cricketing knowledge to umpire and he proved it on field, when he called Muralidaran when he switched to bowling LEG spin! Richie Benaud while commentating for Channel 9 at the time said, "Uh-oh! It looks like it's the umpire and not Muralidaran who is in trouble now."

@@willrobinson4089 The rule was changed because the ICC found that all pace bowlers and most spin bowlers were exceeding the permitted limit at the time. Up to that point, no one had been examined in that great detail. When Muralidaran was called, the Sri Lanka Cricket Board had him examined by the latest available electronic instruments (in Australia) and then, compared his action with other bowlers playing at that time. It was found that all pace bowlers playing at that time exceeded the existing limit. If the limit remained unchanged, all pace bowlers would have been called on the field and the call would have been found to be justified by the instrumentation. That would have meant that all pace bowlers would have been prevented from bowling. And so, the rule was changed. Many followers of cricket didn't know this and assumed that the ICC changed the rule to accommodate Sri Lanka. It is ridiculous to imagine that the Australian cricket board would have sat by and done nothing i a rule was changed just to accommodate a single country, - and, Sri Lanka, the smallest of the cricketing nations at the time. They accepted the rule change to retain their pace bowlers. Which team would have been happy to drop Glenn McGrath?

BJ12578 if you remove Muralis wickets against Bangladesh and Zimbabwe still his average is way better than Warne's career average which includes Zimbabwe and Bangladesh. The champion spinner 💪❤️
@Bernie8330
@Bernie8330 5 жыл бұрын
@@nalindesilva3493 No it doesn't. The 4 tests in total against the zims and the bangers in mid - late 2003 were during Warne's 1 year ban. Other than that he played 1 test against Zimbabwe in late 1999 and 2 against Bangladesh in early 2006 - that is 3 tests out of 145 and all 3 were away from home. It's not just the fact that many of Murali's tests were against Bangladesh and Zimbabwe, most of his 5 fors were at home, in none too world class attacks to share the spoils with (Warne had to share wickets with McGrath, Gillespie and the like), but also many of his 5 fors were in high scoring draws where Murali would have something like 2-110 to his name with the opposition 5 for 450, and then he would clean up the tail to finish with 6-130 in an opposition total of 500 plus. Most of Warne's 5 fors he conceded less than 100 - often considerably less - and they were achieved in bowling the opposition out for low scores to actually win the match. So Warne was a much much bigger impact bowler than Murali. Mind you, Murali was a fine bowler, but putting him in the same bracket as Warne would be like putting a batsman like Simon Katich in the same bracket as someone like Kumar Sanggakara.

Murali was always going to be called by someone. I think it's good that it happened so early in his career, and he was able to be vindicated by the testing process. Let's not forget that many other bowlers with more conventional actions were also found to straighten their arms by between 10-15 degrees. That's why the rule change happened. Darrell Hair was also a very good umpire. He was on the elite panel for years. He may have made the wrong call on this occasion, but he had a long career at the top.
