Dear Cavendish, I always have great fun watching your videos. I have just bought a 2017 Tandem Island (last september) and I am still learning. I am from Recife, Brazil. I see you often sail in very choppy waters and under pretty strong winds. One thing that I am still not very confident about my Tandem Island is the aka brace, that locks the back aka in place in the open/sailing position. When the boat sails in the waves it rocks and makes me fear it may unlock. Did it ever happem to unlock when you are sailing? Beacause if it unlocks the aka bars will close and the boat will obviously flip over.

André Teixeira hello!!! Yes, take Care with the akas: find a Way to local the minutos place. Use a line or make a pin to drill both aka and cross bar... with have had that problem a couple of times already.

André Teixeira #find a way to lock them ... sorry

Many thanks, Cavendish! But I believe I have been misunderstood. I know well already the issue concerning the aka bars disconnecting from the crossbar. And I have already bought pins to lock them in place as a precaution. But I was not asking about that, but about the "aka brace" instead. The name of the part in the Hobie Catalog which I am asking about is "aka brace". It is that short diagonal arm that locks the rear aka bar against the hull of the boat. The Tandem Island has only one "aka brace" on each side of the boat and it locks only the rear aka bar. Does it disconnect too in strong winds and choppy sea? I was wondering if I shoulf install another pair of "aka braces" to also lock against the hull the front aka bars.

André Teixeira right ok! Sorry! We only have had problems with the pin so we change them for stainless steel. Thats all so far...

That was a lot of fun; with the new member of Abisal12 Iñigo sailing his new single Island. We confirm it is much much better than the original one...Difficult to catch and pass on the way to the beach ( finally we won just for metres...jeje.)

One thing more, if I may, Mr. Cavendish. I saw once one of your videos that showed an emergency rudder you had on board and that you monted on the spot after your rudder broke out in the sea. I would like to make a copy of that emergency rudder, to have on board my tandem island,, but I cannot find the video anymore. Could you please tell me what video was, or perhaps post it again, or send me the link?

André Teixeira I dont use it anymore since the rudder isn ‘t a big issue. It was a nightmare by that time but rudders very rarely break now. Only one thing: check for rudder screws to be tighten properly.
