I have a very good friend that was in his youth an Outdoor Instructor, Before moving into Hospitality. He has recently been doing his Mountain Leaders Course here in the UK. He often talks about weather and how it affects the water and we found that he is brilliant at reading the sky and Synoptic Charts that didn't make sense to me. Slowly over the years I have picked up a little bit of knowledge from him, not enough to really use it, but to understand a small part of it. This year we didn't met up for our usual family holiday, and so I cheated and bought Windy, which did help me understand more of what the wind and sea do in combination. Still got a heck of a lot to learn, and no doubt years ahead of learning about how to read the sea and the weather when out on the Sea. Got my First Coastal Paddle with my Canoe Club this coming Sunday, So I will be looking at Windy with great interest over the coming days to see what changes and on Sunday how the app and reality work together. Great Video as always!

Thanks Digger. I use windy as well, but what works for me is, feel the wind on my face and try and estimate how fast it is. Then I have a hand held wind gauge. This helps you get your estimate correct. THEN check and see what windy says. Local wind is always a little different. Thanks for watching!

How did your summer trips go??

I did a Maine trip this summer that was Amazing, and now that I am further North I think I will be back there a lot. I usually don’t do a lot of summer trips because it is too warm for me. I prefer the cooler month. BUT I have two trips planned for early October that I am really excited about. How were your summer trips?

@@AdventureOtaku I got to fall asleep while viewing the Milky Way though the mesh roof of my tent. First time in 17 years that I slept in a tent. Awesome. Was deep in woods north of Albany NY. Kayaked the Finger Lakes in upstate NY, crystal clear spring fed lakes. Cold water and cool nights in July and August. You might like that. Then there is my usual kayak group that kayaks the local waters on Long Island Sound.

@Hikehags anyone who just goes out and paddles without closely observing the water is not a skilled paddler. While it is not rocket science, reading the water and using your skills to work with the conditions is exactly what differentiates a skilled paddler from just another weekend warrior hack. FWIW, I don’t know him, but I suspect Dances with the Sea is not a hack, he probably has extensive knowledge of how the sea behaves and incorporates it into every stroke he takes, but that may not be evident to someone who lacks knowledge. Waves aren’t just waves. Every wave is different in its own particular way. Learning to read how each one differs is one of the abilities that sets a skilled paddler apart from your average schmuck.
