Becker war extrem gut in Wimbledon, das muss man einfach mal festhalten! 11x 1/4 Finale, 9x Semifinale, 7x Finale, damit gehört er zu den ganz Großen bei diesem Event...Pure Klasse auf Rasen.

Dieser erste Satz ist das beste, was Rasentennis der 1980er bieten konnte. Serve & Volley und Returnspiel nah an der Perfektion.

Those days courts were super quick so it made serve and volley game effective on grass. Today's players are not that adept at serve and volley. You watch Alcaraz, Djokovic, Sinner etc etc, they are all good baseline players indulging in long rallies and occasionally coming into the net.

For an Edberg fan like me, 1989 was one gut punch after another... after watching him come heartbreakingly close to winning a French, but failing to convert break chance after break chance against Chang... to this, watching him heartbreakingly give away three straight set points on his own serve at Wimbledon, which would have tied up the match 1-set apiece... and then lose a stinker of a night match to Connors at the U.S. Open... that year was very rough on Ed-heads...

I can feel your pain. I was also a big Edberg fan as a teenager, losing at Roland Garros against Chang in the final after a 2:1 set lead was a big upset. As far as I remember in 1989 Edberg lost also some indoor matches against Becker. The Wimbledon final was a small nightmare only surpassed by the two championship points of Federer in 2019. But the 1990 season was definitely better for Edberg.

Maybe give some credit, though. Chang played his heart out, Becker was in the form of his life (and would likely have won anyway, if Edberg had taken the second set), and Connors played a great match (and was a difficult opponent for Edberg, generally).

@@stalli1973 No. Sampras started winning on grass and starting his dominance in 1993, benefiting from the then powerful 1990´s graphite raquets and more developed strings, which helped his already powerful serve & forehand a lot. Boris was already "old and unmovitated" in the nineties, and by 1993 was totally burned up, although had a last dance run in 1995-96 beating Agassi, then Sampras indoors and winning the 1996 Australian Open. Becker invented the power tennis, his monstruous serve, powerful all around game and also with a great skilled faculties were something never seen before by 1985, winning Queens & Wimbledon back to back as a 17 year old, a feat that may never be repeated. Nobody had the aura Becker had on the court. Becker had to deal with Lendl, McEnroe, Wilander, Edberg, Cash, Connors and Noah in the 80s, the most competitive and tough era in mens tennis ever. By the time Agassi and Sampras arrived and peaked in the nineties, Boris Becker was done, as i said.

No. Becker had much much harder competition; from 1984 to 1991, Becker´s peak years, had also Ivan Lendl´s peak, Stefan Edberg´s peak and Mats Wilander´s peak; all in atime where techology had developed sure over wood, but still not at all in the way it did in the nineties, where Sampras´s Wilson Pro Staff and strings helped him took the power game to unseen levels, and specially on grass, where it stayed the same with no changes in speed ... and if you add that his competition in the decade was inferiors to Becker´s, there you have winning 7 Wimbledon titles and no losses in the final. The 80s golden generation were done in the nineties. Courier and Agassi were not real threaths on grass to Sampras, and Goran choked often on important moments.

@jefftravis3808 Yes, they have been benefited to jump from winning 6-8 slams era to 20 slam era. They ARE NOT TWICE, THREE TIMES AS GOOD, as those legends. Technology nowdays allow players to be even better than they are already; in 10 years, 20 years, a next Roger Federer will be able to win 40 Grand Slam titles. And you will be telling these exact same words to those brainwhashed people. You are brainwashed now.

Nobody has ever had the aura that Boris Becker had on a tennis court. It was like seeing a German God walk around the court, his presence was insuperable.

Benefited with current technology (raquets and strings) which allowed them to be more consistent and benefit from slower court conditions on grass; in the 80s at 30 you were done by trying the serve & volley game everytime and also by hitting with those heavier raquets that produced less power, the body, arms, forearm suffered much more. Borg quit at 26 done. Nadal, Djokovic would NOT have beaten Becker with the 80s technology and fast grass conditions, the true tennis conditions, not these Clay desguised courts, shameful really. Nadal could have NOT won 14 garroses with those raquets. You never saw Becker play live, or in that era; your champions have been the "Big 3", thats why you are brainwashed.

These two were terrific to watch. Edberg was a cheap Sampras, and had a tremendous backhand, serve and net game. Both could play on 3 of the four majors and were forever a threat to Sampras/agassi.

Selten Edberg so schlecht am Netz gesehen. Ein Volleypatzer nach dem anderen. Und wenn er nicht direkt den Fehler macht, volliert er nicht zwingend genug und gibt Becker immer wieder 2. Chance.

I think both Becker and Edberg got better in 1990s. Becker I thought was more talented in this pair, unfortunately, his brain took time off many times (see 1990 Wimbledon Final----Literally on sleeping pills.) And still almost won, was up in 5th set. I do see your point, this match is filled with useless unforced errors. Can't believe I am saying that about my favorite players. But times have changed, maybe better rackets too.

Schwachsinniger Kommentar...das Spiel ist viel viel schneller geworden...damals war S&V noch ein probates Mittel aber heute funktioniert das nicht mehr... warum wohl spielt denn heute niemand mehr auf der Tour S&V....

Naja. Das Finale in Paris hat Zverev dennoch am Netz verloren. So viele leichte Volleyfehler bei wichtigen Punkten.

@@HaraldNowo weil die Plätze und Bälle viel langsamer sind. Das ist der Grund. Und sowieso von den BIG3 hatte nur Roger ein anständiges Volley-können. Wenn die Plätze noch so wären wie in diesem Spiel, hätte Federer 25 Slams und Nadal kein einziges Wimbledon. Novak vielleicht 1-2.

FACT until 1997 the grass used a Winbledon was of lower quality! e.g. it cut up a lot more and then since 1998 they have used a stronger grass

Not much different in the talent level in tennis since the open era began in 1969. It's mainly equipment change and ground conditions slower court's. Reason is there always players who play across generational lines and do just as well. Thing you have to look at is how the players have to adapt their game to be successful because of the conditions and would a player win as much given the old condition smaller less advanced racket and different court speed. Let's look at the 1978 Wimbledon between Borg v Tanner. Borg beat Tanner who had the biggest serve of the day I think he hit 140mph with his Head pro. Probably 1st serve average 120-130mph which was big in those days. Okay say he had one of today's 100sq inch rackets maybe he would have added close to 10 MPH on his serve and it would change the outcome. Maybe if Djokovic had to play on the faster Grass he couldn't construct his rally so well and be forced to serve and volley more. So it's really hard to say what would happen cuz you don't really look at the variables and just give more of an emotional opinion.

Oui mais Edberg laisse passer trois balles de set sur son service pour revenir à 1 set partout. Face à un Becker de ce niveau là, ça ne pardonne pas. Le tournant de cette finale.
