I've been working in cold wax for almost 10 years and you have me some new ideas. Thanks, Shari.

Loving this series! Will definitely stay tuned. I saw a cold wax painting that I just fell in love with and went out and bought a can . It’s been sitting on my shelf, because I was not really sure of how to move forward with it, so perfect timing! Thank you for this!

Wow, these are gorgeous! Thanks for this series, Shari. I do encaustic work, but have been curious about cold wax, so it's great to see what it can do.

LOVE. Did I mention - love it. Yes. Love it. No sealing? No heat?
@ShariReplogle6 жыл бұрын
Thanks @The Artist ! The wax is it's own finish sealant just like encaustic. You can add a clear layer of cold wax as your final layer if desired. No heat required :)

You've inspired me! Recently, I've experimented with using Alcohol inks in cold wax and it adds a lovely transparency to the work while also adding colour. Do you think you might ever show us how to best use cold wax as layers on encaustic medium? I think that this would be cool... I think I see an e-course in your future, Shari! :)

Do I have to use encaustic gesso with cold wax? Will Gamsol do the same thing that Galcyd does?
@ShariReplogle6 жыл бұрын
Hi Karen , Gamsol will thin the wax without adding any gloss back in, it will stay matte . Galkyd will add a slight sheen (a little ) and help harden the finished product . If you do not want it to thin but still have these benefits you can also use Galkyd gel. You can use several primers with the cold wax . Any primer appropriate for oil painting will work and also encaustic gesso.

Shari I am a newbie when it comes to encaustic and cold wax but would like to add this to my mixed media or on its own! Please will you advise about the cold wax. Thank you🥀

Hi Marci that is awesome ! I go into a bit more detail on mixing the cold wax etc. in this first video in the summer cold wax series here : kzbin.info/www/bejne/epqkamt4m96qn7c and then am showing a different technique you can do with the cold wax each week for the "Wax on Wednesdays Summer Cold Wax Series " . For a completely in depth step by step tutorial (with projects ) I have the new workshop coming out "Cold Wax Journal Journey" that goes over set up , pigments , layering, LOTS of techniques, and of course putting all of these together to create a beautiful cold wax journal that we bind and make from scratch. That one is on sale for pre registration through July 20th here : www.sharireplogle.com/store/p19/Early_BIRD_REGISTRATION_SALE_Cold_Wax_Journal_Journey_.html Have fun :)

Shari Replogle ......thank you for your reply Shari! With being in South Africa and the Rand/Dollar exchange rate it makes it almost impossible for me to enjoy your workshop but I am a good learner so I hope to be able to do that here. I will find out if cold wax is available in SA too! Shari I love your encaustic wax art! 🌹

Hi I am fairly new to cold wax and it is made to mix with oil paints and is not suitable for use on its own. I experimented with acrylic but it was not successful.

Can heat be used on the cold wax to spread it?
@ShariReplogle6 жыл бұрын
Hi Karen ! This is a great simple question but has a long answer :) Technically unlike encaustic, you can thin cold wax with solvents . Gamblin for instance can be thinned with GamSol or Galgyd liquid etc., Dorlands with turpentine , poppyseed oil etc. In my experience you don't want to heat something that has a solvent like gamsol or turpentine in it and breathe in the fumes. That said I know there are artists that do heat it a bit. A ventilator mask should be worn that is appropriate for these solvents . I rely purely on the thinning agents and do not heat the cold wax because of the toxicity of what is in it. It has a much different make-up than the pure damar resin and beeswax in encaustic. Hope this helps !

Hello, how long does it take to fully dry once you are finished? Could you use cold wax on a regular canvass? Thank you
@ShariReplogle6 жыл бұрын
Hi Rosie , Cold wax dries faster than oil paint alone but still takes a while to completely cure . It really depends on the thickness of the layers and how many layers you add. It can take from a couple of days on a thin layer to weeks depending on the size , thickness of the layers, and number of layers added. I hope this helps and you give it a go ! Have fun :)
