I'm glad! As great as the live action did, Nami's backstop and the village as a whole pales in comparison to the original manga/anime. Oda is a brilliant storyteller for this one. Similarly the Sanji backstory was closer, which is why it hits as well in Live Action. Sadly this didn't get the same treatment, cause it's a monumental arc.

Exactly. One reason I tell ppl OP is an adventure shonen, not a battle shonen. Key difference is basically, when an antagonist appears, a battle shonen asks "how" we win(that's the core of the plot), an adventure asks "why". Luffy didn't even know who he was fighting. He didn't know how he would win. That was never even a thought he had. All he needed was his "why", which was, someone made his navigator cry.

The thing that makes the anime version so much more impactful is that, unlike the live action, Bellemere never had the sit-down-and-talk-things-out with Nami after they had their fight. In the anime, they never got that reconciliation before Bellemere died. Imagine having a huge fight with your mom and running away and then your mom gets killed before you can patch things up. That's a heavy burden for Nami to bear.
@curtmc
@curtmc 6 ай бұрын
I disagree. It’s more like she died right after patching up. It’s sad but they definitely never held any grudges with each other to begin with. Nami was just being considerate which is why she said “you would be better off without us” which triggered Bellemere because she would not have SURVIVED without them. It was unspoken but they needed no reconciliation. That’s my opinion at the very least.

Yeah changing the fact that Nojiko and the villagers knew the whole time was the worst change the made in the live action IMO. I wonder if the show runners ever spoke about the decision in any interviews cause it seems so major I’m surprised Oda approved that one

The anime makes Nami's character arc much clearer. She starts as an ungrateful kid wishing she wasn't Bellemere's daughter, living in a poor town, etc. to realizing that when the opportunity arrives to deny being related, she wants nothing but to be Bellemere's daughter.
@UltimateGamerCC
@UltimateGamerCC 6 ай бұрын
i thought that she was an ungrateful kid too... but then i realized.. the reason that she got upset and talked to Bellemere the way that she did.. she realized that Bellemere was struggling, she hated being a burden, at her age she was emotionally and mentally intelligent, hence why she stopped being a child the moment that Bellemere died and took the responsibility of saving the village onto herself.
@wilasd5501

A small detail that bothered me about this arc in the live action is the fact that LA Nojiko had her tattoos. In the manga/anime she got them to support Nami because she knew about her plan all along. In the live action Nojiko didn't know about Nami's plan and was mad at her, so the tattoos don't make sense. I've always found that Oda made it right when explaining that even if Bellemere tried to lie about her daughters they would have been killed anyways if they tried to escape the island. This doesn't just make her look as a good mother but also as a very smart character.
@monkeyboy275bobo8

Yeah but to be fair the show is more tailored towards an western audience and also that part of the story was initially released 20 years ago. It just doesnt make sense to make the tattoo a big deal in the show tbh because thats a very specific aspect of japanese culture which the majority of viewers especially in 2020 wouldnt know about. Tattoos are way too common now for this to be a relevant plotpoint i think.
@Arkayjiya
@Arkayjiya 6 ай бұрын
@@monkeyboy275bobo8 Nah, Nojiko getting tattoos in support of her sister is perfectly understandable for Westerners. It doesn't even matter that Tattoos are associated with Yakuzas in Japan, because in this story we know the tatoo in this arc is of Arlong's crew. And tatoos are associated with delinquents everywhere anyway (even though we tend to laugh at people making those associations these days, we still know they exist) so the Yakuza history doesn't need to come int play at all, the tattoo thing would work perfectly for a western audience. In fact I know it would work because it literally did for me. I started reading One Piece around 17 years ago. I had literally no knowledge of Japanese culture at the time but the symbolism of the tattoo still worked perfectly.

In the live action Luffy have heard Nami's backstory as well as the others, in the manga/anime he just left them for a walk without any interest in her past, he don't need to hear reasons to help her, he already said to her that she is his nakama, that is all he needs. So it was little bit confusing when in live action Nami said "you don't know anything about what was going on here", and Luffy said "I don't" like wtf, he defenitely knows, he have heard it from Nojiko. But here in the anime he literally knows zero, but he sees his friend in pain, so just ask for help, that will be enough, that's why this scene was so impactful in the anime, and iconic walk!

The worst change in the live action to me was that Nojiko, Gen-san, and the villagers didn’t know that Nami was working to buy the village. My favorite part is the reason Gen-san gives for why they didn’t tell her they knew: they wanted her to feel free to give up on the plan and run away if working for Arlong became too much for her without her feeling like they were counting on her to save them. They put up with Arlong’s rule to protect Nami because she was sacrificing her freedom for them. But neither felt they could tell the other because they were trying to protect each other from Arlong. It makes it easier to understand why Nami would go through so much for this village when you see in the anime how much they care for her. And why the villagers marching to their deaths to confront Arlong that finally breaks Nami and makes her desperate enough to ask for Luffy’s help. The Live Action did a great job, but it can’t hold a candle to the emotional payoff of this arc in the anime.

Definitely the most memorable and greatest episodes in the East Blue. Half the fandom fell in love at this point and I guess you get why. I'm by the way a firm believer that Arlong is critically underrated by the Navy, probably because of their corruption. Don't wanna get into his backstory, but he was a successful Grand Line pirate who controlled a sea king, an experienced crew of fish men and multiple islands with plans to subjugate the East Blue. I'd easily put him in the 50-70 million bounty category.

I think Atlong would have honored the agreement, but ONLY if Nami made certain that she covered every possible way he could possibly weasel out of it based on technicality. And, even then, I'm pretty sure he would find some other way to get leverage over Nami in order to keep her working for him. He has his pride, and he keeps it intact by making sure he it TECHNICALLY correct (the best kind of correct) when upholding or denying deals with money. One aspect of the Anime that the Live Action can't manage to capture is the societal aspect. In One Piece, there is a lot of attention on how small societies and villages live in a very close society where everyone is friendly with one another and act almost like family - this is a prominent aspect in One Piece because it is prominent in Eastern cultures in general, but less so in Western cultures where there is more focus on individualism. This is why Western adaptations of Eastern fiction never manage to capture that in a good way if at all.

If you think about it, it needed some music to match the vibe of the anime, plus the Hype Boys Johnny and Yosaku..as well as sense of direction to reach the park. Here only Usopp knows the direction.. in LA, nobody knew where it is except for Nami, so they went with Nami.. Nami being a part of the Walk, would have actually tarnished it, so they left it.

Some context about the voicing. Japan does things a bit differently than here. They have all the actors in the same room performing the lines. This probably explains why the original audio feels so fluid. It's more like taking animation to a radio play.

After Mihawk's amazing introduction and subsequent duel with Zoro, followed by Sanji's backstory and Luffy's determination in his fight with Don Krieg the anime had started to pique my interest. I had previously dropped it after Syrup Village and after almost a year had decided to give it another shot, only to be pleasantly surprised by the Barratie arc. Then Arlong Park started.. I was immediately completely engrossed in Nami's story and the masterful character writing Oda puts on display through out, hanging on the edge of my seat the whole way through. All of it culminating with such an immaculate scene.. "Luffy.. Help me". This was the moment that solidified me as a life long fan, of this story, of Oda, of these characters, it's just so masterfully setup. Everyone can resonate with how hard something as simple as asking for help can be, the mutual trust it shows between not only Luffy and Nami but the whole crew is just, so powerful. Luffy not knowing what is going on makes it infinitely stronger, he knows Nami doesn't want him involved, she has told him so herself multiple times. Not only does the situation/details not matter to him since he's already chosen to trust her with everything he has when he made her part of the crew but he intentionally keeps himself out of it completely until Nami makes the decision to involve him. He wants to help her because to him he's already chosen to stand by her no matter what but until SHE makes that decision he 's just casually hanging out haha. He only steps in to stop her from mutilating herself. He gives her space, respects her boundaries/decision to handle it herself but shows her he's not going anywhere and only "saves her" when she finally breaks down and asks him to. It's just such an amazing culmination of both of their characters up until this point, especially after learning what Luffy is all about at the Barratie. The way he puts his hat on her head is just the icing on the cake, tells her everything she needs to know right there, it's just.. c'mon man. I could honestly write so much more about why this scene is just perfect in every way. I've been obsessed with One Piece ever since.

I feel like if I didn’t watch the live action first, then I may have dropped this show after Syrup Village. But I knew there was good stuff after that arc because of the live action, because Arlong Park is definitely when this show really hooks you

Nojiko and the village knowing about Nami's true motive for working with Arlong, Nami trying to put on a brave face to tell the villagers that she'll get the money back, then the villagers going and confronting Arlong are all skipped in the live-action. Skipping those scenes doesn't make Nami feel as desperate as in the source material. And while it's hard to watch Nami stab herself, it really feels like a mutilation here.

Bellemere knew that she was living on borrowed time, her arm was shattered to pieces, it would take MONTHS to heal, meanwhile she had only 100k Berri, between raising two children, barely eating and toiling with TWO healthy arms. there was no way she was gonna be able to pay the price regularly, so she decided that she would die being their mom, allowing them to stay in the village.

fun fact: the notorious 4Kids version edited Arlong to pointing and saying to send Nami's mom "to the dungeon" which unintentionally kind of puts a more cruel spin on it being that it's given the idea she is still alive but Nami just won't ever find her

nami's "luffy, help me" scene was shot to shot in the live action most probably because they knew if they did literally anything else with it, then the fandom would riot. in my eyes, and a lot of people i talked to too, that single scene was the make or break moment that would tell us if the live action did its job or not. that scene has such an iconic status in fandom, even to this day where we had so many more to come later on, that if the live action didn't do the direct translation from animanga to show as they did, then fans would simply not accept the show. truly believe this, and i'm glad the show makers were clearly aware of this too. this is why it's good to have actual fans on your creative team. they know our experience. i'm glad they out importance to it too.

One issue I have with the live action is Arlong attacking the village at the end. He send Nezumi so she can’t give Arlong the money because he clearly wants Nami to keep working for him. But then goes around to attack the only thing that he has over Nami and could motivate her to work for him.

Live action had its issues, but one of the things that they were usually pretty good at is picking out the scenes and moments that needed to be as true as possible. They knew this scene, this cry for help, this first walk, they were essential. They'd have failed if they didn't put these in there. There are different levels to watching One Piece. It usually starts with "Why are there so many episodes?" and can often lead to "Why aren't there *more* ?" Who knows, if you watch long enough, you might even tear up a bit. I know you generally don't, not everyone does, but there are more moments that hit pretty hard throughout the run of the series.

Vs. the LA, I also love how in the anime Luffy pushes his hat down on Nami instead of gently putting it on her head. To me, that a little detail that just demonstrates the fierce anger Luffy has on Nami's behalf. Him saying, "Don't worry. I got you." without saying it.

I love that Luffy barely has any idea what's going on at any given point. And yeah, having that shot for shot moment was peak. Normally you have so many people involved in production it's very easy for scene like that to get shaved down and lose a lot of their effect. I gotta give the live action props for nailing some of the most important parts.

Here we go, HERE WE GO! I've been waiting for this. I want to know if this actually broke you since I know from other videos that you rarely (if ever) cry and One Piece is notorious for breaking that trend in people. (I'm currently in YET another "emotional ugly crying" section myself)

Luffy did not need to know Nami's past, he doesn't need to know who these scumbags were, all he was concerned was that they made Nami cry, and that is the last thing you wanna do against Luffy, hurting his friends will make you a target for his beating. This arc was 🔥.

Glad you could make upto this point ever since you saw the LA version of this. Sure, villagers not being aware and Nojiko was a big departure..took away a lot of moments, plus Gen-san. For them to conclude a Garp storyline, along with Arlong fight, in one ep, made it shorter...only if it had more eps I guess.

I wish in the live action the people in village know what Nami was doing and Nami talking to them to stop going to fight Arlong leading to the Putting the Straw Hat on Nami scene. I wish it lead like that in live action. But I understand they have to rush through so much and not give moments for other characters. I’m upset they didn’t do much with Genzo in the live action the guy with pinwheel hat and the one who hugged Nami

One thing that irritates me about the live action version is that after Nami's treasure is taken away she starts running to nowhere, before collapsing and stabbing herself with a knife that just suddenly appeared. I get that both things intensify the situation, but it doesn't make sense like in the anime.

The live action did a lot of great things but this is on another level. Hopefully with all the money that it should've bought in for Netflix they don't resort to cutting as much out for Season 2. One Piece is amazing and why wer're holding on still at the ~1100 mark for both manga and anime.

The live action is pretty good in almost every respect but I think Arlong park is so perfectly written to draw emotion and attachment out of the reader that every little change was for the worse. I wish they had just 30 more minutes so that they could do her backstory, Nojiko, and Genzo justice.

@@MikeyVenture Well I think if they had one or two more episode in order to cover Loguetown, the actual ending to East Blue they could have moved a lot of the season resolutions to there and had more time for Arlong Park without it needing an extra episode of it's own. Which according to Steven Maeda they wanted two more episodes to cover Loguetown but couldn't get the budget for them. That should hopefully be less of an issue for Season 2 since Season 1 was such a big hit.

I loved the live action, I think that it was clearly made by people who care about the source material, it had a lot of love put into it, and when there were changes, I was overall positive with them and knew that they had to make changes for the sake of adapting it to another medium. But the one change that I actively disliked was Nojiko hating Nami. I think it detracts from Nami's character for not confiding in her sister of all people, and I think it detracts from Nojiko's character for not trusting her dear sister more, and assuming for 10 whole years that Nami really did just turn pure evil and joined the monster that killed their mom.
