I got a Panasonic 3DO for Christmas 1993. I somehow convinced my parents that my Sega CD, from the previous Christmas, as well as my Turbo Express, Genesis, GameBoy, and NES were basically obsolete. I opened my 3DO on Christmas Eve, which was how we did presents. It meant that my brother and I could stay up late playing and no one had to worry about waking up early Christmas morning. Anyway, the experience was underwhelming. A month later I asked my Mom if it could be returned. The only decent game I can remember liking was Road Rash. For some reason Babbage’s at the mall took the console and games back and gave us a full refund. Part of me wishes I’d hung onto it, as it’s one of the only retro consoles I don’t have in my collection besides the Neo Geo AES and Phillips CD-I. But as a kid I felt guilty letting my parents waste so much money on something I wasn’t really getting a lot of enjoyment out of.

Great story. The facts are that competition was coming strong. Sad that Eternal Champions destroyed this terrible fighting game. In the end, 3DO got left in the dust not only because of the Playstation but the fact that there was no arsenal of great original developers which at the least comes from experience in the gaming industry. EA sports money wasn't gling to be enough.

Mortal Kombat's digitized characters had digital retouches to keep them from looking as blocky and pixelated as a typical low-resolution digitized image. This also helped keep the various frames of animation from sharply contrasting, again something that can happen when using different digitized scans of the same object due to subtle variances in lighting. Almost no other game developer who tried to follow the "digitized sprites" craze used that level of care, which is why Mortal Kombat has a look that no other game pulled off.

Mazer jumps to mind, having a pretty solid concept and decent control, but just goes so fast that each level can end in seconds. I admittedly play more FMV games than anything on it. I really like Psychic Detective unironically, and I love the American Laser Games light gun games like Who Shot Johnny Rock, Space Pirates, Drug Wars, etc., though those are mostly for laughs. Strahl was fun for an anime-esque Dragon's Lair clone, though.

In Las Vegas there used to be a store called Gamers that was open from the mid 90s through the early 2000s. It was the absolute best game rental store in town and you could even rent game consoles, which was wild back then. I think it was $20 for a couple days for a Neo Geo, Saturn, 3DO, etc. which of course, my parents had to rent for me as an occasional treat because I was a kid. One weekend, me and my best friend convinced my mom to rent us a 3DO with Way of the Warrior and Gex. We had a lot of fun with both games, but WotW was just so goofy and corny, but also very cool to us, that we had more fun with it than we probably should have. I remember having a GamePro or some other magazine with a bunch of cheat codes and fatalities to try out for the game and we spent a good afternoon trying to unlock the hidden stages and characters, like a dragon and a skeleton dude, and trying all the stage fatalities and what not. The moves were hard to pull off. Later, in my early 20s, I bought a 3DO and this game and didn’t have as much fun with it, but it was still nostalgiac af since Naughty Dog had become a top developer over the decades and I had a lot more appreciation for Rob Zombie 😁

@Jabroniville3 ай бұрын
Awesome stuff! If I'd have known this was coming, I'd have dropped some lore about the various people who played the characters. I have an old video game magazine where the creators talked about it. Here's what I've found: Shaky Jake was played by Mitch Gavin, the younger brother of Andy Gavin. Mitch was a wannabe bass player who was always experimenting with dated hairdos- it makes him look like a classic teenage wannabe rock star, with longish hair, jeans, and a vest (yes, Shaky Jake wears Mitch's actual clothing). Jake's staff and whiskey bottle also came from Mitch, who gave the staff to Andy as a gift. Hilariously, though Mitch himself doesn't have a gut, something about the way they shot one of his victory poses makes it look like he has an ample beer belly- Mitch has been embarrassed by that shot ever since :). Glory was played by Carole May, who was dating the game's designer Jason Rubin before filming started. They say she was a real sweetheart, and still came back to do the filming after they broke up! I literally still remember this story from reading it the first time all the way back in December 1994, to show you how weird memory is. Fox is played by Chris Sanford, who went to the same dojo as the guy who played Nobunaga, and was recruited that way. He was a Harvard grad who sold exotic cars and used to live in Japan- the pants were Chris's own, who wore them because people tended to be unfriendly when he went out to the bars, and so had to have pants that worked for fighting. The character has no voice because Chris went on vacation when they were doing the recordings, and they had no way to get in touch with him! Major Gaines has a HILARIOUS real-world backstory, though. The actor who plays him, "T-Mike" Gaines (a frat brother of Jason Rubin, and the only cast member not from the Boston area), is "5'8" but cut", according to the designers, yet begged them to give him a huge sprite, bigger than all the other characters. This, plus his name, give me the most TREMENDOUS vibe of "Small Man Syndrome" ever- the idea of a guy a bit below-average in height wanting to be soooooooooooo tall just bleeds of "I wish I was bigger". There's also a hilarious bit where the in-game sprite is clean-shaven, but when it came time to do the close-up photos of the cast for the Character Select Screen, he'd grown a goatee, and refused to shave off the bad "soul patch" part, because it'd taken so long to grow in. So the Character Select for Major Gaines now features this tiny lil' patch of beard, unlike the in-game version of the guy. The Dragon is played by Tae Min Kim, and a good friend of Mike Gavin, Andy's brother, who played Shaky Jake. Kim was in Aikido, and wanted a lot of his frends to get in on the action, but his buff ("Well, semi-buff", the magazine adds, snarkily) physique made him the only one chosen. He was said to be a "very mellow" guy, who never got tense even during the marathon eight-hour filming sessions under hot studio lights. The Ninja is one of two characters played by the game's co-developer, Jason Rubin, though The Ninja is humorously listed as playing "Himself" in the credits. In the behind-the-scenes info, they actually joke about how "stereotypical" a fighting game character this is, and he was the first guy created for the game, as Andy Gavin had created an engine for the game and wanted to put a character into it. Ironically, despite being so stereotypical, he was the most work to produce- they had to film him five times, once because 3DO announced the game would have a lot more memory in the released version, so the character needed to be bigger. Like The Ninja, Konotori is played by Jason Rubin, taking advantage of the masked nature of both characters. In a curious move when advertising his big game, he boasts about how cheaply this costume was made- "His leggings are Ace bandages; the uniform is a standard gi; the hat was five bucks and the fans $1.50 each; the bandanas were from Kmart". Yes, they advertised that a game made with $15,000 computers was filmed with people wearing about 20 bucks in clothing. Nobunaga is played by Steve Chan, a Ph.D. student in Biology at HARVARD UNIVERSITY, and was recognized by the game's developers when they spotted him reading a magazine on computer graphics on a plane flight. When they got to talking, he revealed his desire to get into multimedia marketing, his $15,000 Mac set-up (!!), and introduced them to the guy who played Fox in the game. Steve therefore became both a character in the game (he studied at Chris Sanford's dojo), and a worker behind the scenes, helping to process all the frames of animation. Nikki's played by what looks like a white girl named Tamara Genest, who was actually a HARVARD LAW student at the time, and was a friend of Andy Gavin's. She'd spent two years in Japan on a scholarship and ended up eloping with a guy, much to the surprise of her parents! Gulab Jamun was played by Vijay Pande, and not listed in the credits by name- so secret was he that his name was blurred. Vijay was a friend of Andy Gavin's from school- a guy who worked at Naughty Dog for years and has now worked as a Professor at Stanford University for over twenty years. Oh, Way of the Warrior.

Adjusted for inflation the cost of a 3DO and this game is over $1100. Truly we live in a much better time for gaming.

I still have this game. Liked it so much saved it in storage.

Thanks for this, i had never played this, but I take one of my 3DO's to the PGX Game convention for people to play, i usually have Gex or Star Blade and i was going to buy this for people to play, but now i think it would just turn people away.

I remember Way of the Warrior, the magazines said it was one of the worst games for the 3DO but at that time i was already awaiting for the PSX.

I remember the TV promotions for the 3do where you were able to get it in payments at the time 700 bucks was Hella expensive I remember the game they would show was mad dog and the dungeon one.

If I remember right it was $700 at launch and I bought it…. I was so pissed at Trip for this. I did have some fun but man, what could have been.

I loved how quickly Trip jumped ship and ported everything decent to PS1 and Saturn. Yeah, "we got it and they don't".

Thanks for the video Sega aside from Armymen series never took a deep dive into 3d0, gex too. They cant even say 3d wasn't around at the time since PlayStation was already out along with PC beginning to get cheaper.

I had a few magazines with Way of the Warrior in them. I thought it really looked cool. I wanted it. Boy, did I dodge a bullet. Sucks to because some of the visuals looked pretty cool to me. Good thing the 3do was overpriced to the point of me never actually seeing one. They weren't sold in stores where I lived. No friends I had owned one.

At the time, it’s was cool as s*** and music/graphics was above everything out. You were cool if you had this regardless of stiffness. We loved it, another great was twisted to play with friends

Honestly loved this game so much as a teen and played for hours and hours and hours. Got used to the control style and thought it was so fun. Even now I love to play it and the 3DO continues to be my all time favorite system.

I'm pretty sure I've only seen this one in Fatality compilation videos. Funny to see an early Naughty Dog game like this.

No lie. In EGM screenshots the game looked incredible and I wanted to try it. But yeah the 3do was way outta our price range.

I remember drooling over this game in middle school. Seeing it in magazines like EGM got me excited to play. Well, I finally got it last year. Omg, what a let down.

Hey mate, I wanted to know if you will making a new video covering the recently announced Marvel vs Capcom Fighting Collection coming out later on this year? And if so, when will you be covering all of these Capcom classics into a compilation video please. Thank you for covering this game as well, it's a good thing that I don't have a 3DO during the 90's. Back when I was little, I never even heard of this game at all. I'm really glad that I missed this one entirely and instead, I totally just remember Naughty Dog for reason alone and I guess you already know that answer well: Crash Bandicoot series of games, not fighting games. Thanks Sega Lord X, you really made my day 5 days ago with this awesome video! Keep up the extremely excellent work with ALL your videos!! 👍😎

The fact that Rubin and Gabin literally made this in between College classes Is actually Impressive. Not that it was good but very much infact a bad fighter. Also...they weren't even at the same colleges. The true accomplishment was it was actually made. I do believe it could have been "the way"! had they attempted it at the time Crash was afterwards. But would anyone trade what has become the Naughty Dog we know thereafter and today for the errors learned from "THAT ONE" game!

I still own my tip loader Panasonic 3do and this was the 1st game II ever picked up for it! There was some silly fun to be had there. But itsndidnt compare to the likes of the Sam Sho or Street Fighter ports I also ended up owning on the console.

Whoa! I remember when 3DO came out. $500 back then was crazy. How have you been able to play all these systems when they came out? Maybe you're older and had a real paying job back then...but damn, 3DO was just too much $$$.

"When viewing pictures of the game it was gorgeous", really? I remember looking at the pictures in magazines when I was a kid and thinking "This looks terrible, why can't a $700 system look better than Mortal Kombat?"

at the time, 3do had sf 2x as exclusive title, naked titles and different variants of the consoles.
