Wayde van Niekerk edges Akani Simbine over 200m in Roodepoort, South Africa

World and Olympic 400m champion from South Africa, Wayde van Niekerk (44), won the much talked-about 200m dash in 20.10 (+2.1) at the 2nd leg of the ASA Athletix Invitational Meet powered by AVANTI at Ruimsig Athletics Stadium, Roodepoort, Johannesburg on Tuesday 30 March, 2021.
Commonwealth champion Akani Simbine (4th from left) finished 2nd, while Free State’s Tsebo Matsoso rounded off the podium.

Wayde is not doing the double and simbine is not winning the gold, now that Coleman is out, he might get the bronze but even then it will be tough, gardiner looks like the 400m favorite now, Norman is really good but we saw what happened in Doha last year, he hasn’t proven himself in the champs, Wayde could pose a threat if he gets back to his 2016-17 form.

Jobodwane ran his best time of 19:87 sec at the world athletic championship in Beijing 2015 ( wining bronze and setting a new SA record ) as a 22 year old. He has not improved on his times since then . Compare that with Wade van Niekerk and Akani Simbani who both have improved on their times on regular intervals over the past 5 years. It could be he is not taking athletics serious anymore . Or maybe he needs a new coach or something to get him motivated again to put in the hard work. The talent as a 200m sprinter is definitely there.

If Wade can stay injury free he stand a good chance of winning the 400m Olympic gold again. I dont think he will be fit enough to do the 200m also given how he has been absent from running . He is going to face tough competition from Steven Gardiner of Bahamas and Michael Norman ( who also ran sub 10 sec 100m , sub 20 sec 200m and sub 44 sec 400m. These two athletes has improved tremendously over the past 3 years . Wade going to train in Florida USA to prepare for this years Olympics in Japan is a good move . This will enable him to train along side the the likes of Noah Lyles 200m world champion and Shaunae Miller the top 200m and 400m sprinter from Bahamas. If his body dont break down , and he get to compete in some real tough athletic meetings leading up to the olympics ,he have a realistic chance of winning gold or come home with atleast a medal.

Its either Akani Simbine didnt put in as much pratice over the event or he is just an 100m sprinter, but for a sprinter who done so many impressive times over the 100m he shouldve easily won this contest, it was a wind aided time and Van isnt at his best yet.
