I don’t think it’s mandatory. but it depends what you want I think that will make your bed really high and make your headboard smaller. For me I chose the bed because I wanted a high headboard but my experience has been good without one and the bed has been sturdy and comfy

Almost 3 weeks for the mattress and 5 weeks for the bed you can get it expedited for a quicker delivery but I chose the free option and I also live in an apartment complex so delivery was a little bit more challenging but if you have a house I think it would come quicker.
