Watching this scene in the movie hits really hard. They're sitting in a circle, quietly listening to this boy sing a song about death and what lies beyond. Then, when the song ends, they all rise and march off to nearly certain death.

I wouldn’t describe it as a cover version. It’s a traditional English version of an old German hymn written in the 17th century. You wouldn’t say someone did a cover version of Silent Night.

@@RachelHardy If before i said that you lacked the bloodlust and darkness to portrait if i had a heart accuratlly, i must say the sadness and longing in your voice makes this music of hope beautifull, you portraited it perfectlly, in terms of sound and intrepretation, becouse its about hope, hope of a better life, its a song of travellers, the migrants of yore, and that relats to everyone that is making is way to something. There is no room for darkness in this one, that is why its perfect for your sadness, wich in turn is your greatest streght, becouse it creates empaty. sorry for the misspelling, i´m portuguese.

My grandfather was wounded in 1917 on the Western Front, Sommes. Gas. He was only 18, served in the Royal Artillery. Worked with horses. Bigger than life: (him, but also the horses, lol) lived to almost 60, survived a devastating coal mine cave-in where he had to a cut off his own leg to get out in time. Used a car with a special cane. They just don't make guys like that anymore. Btw, he was conscripted, not everyone volunteered. I was born just before he died and never met him.

Beautiful cover! " Popularized by the movie '1917', "Wayfaring Stranger" is a folk and gospel song that likely originated in the early 19th century. The lyrics were first published in English in 1858." Thank you! People keep forgetting the origins of songs and stories. It really helps when the people covering the music share this kind of information.

The printed version of the song does indeed originate in English in the American South in the 1850's however it is likely a song that came over with Scots-Irish settlers who came to Appalachia in 18th century. The song in its current form can be traced to Central Appalachia to about 1784 where the American Pioneers sang it as a hymn.

I'm a licensed skydiver. Statistically, it's not as dangerous as most people imagine. But I've been to funerals for fellow jumpers. A lot of people would say that we're stupid. Truth is, we're not reckless or naive. Most of us make a lot of effort to get away with what we do, and we have a complex relationship with Death. The Reaper's a bastard, but an enemy to be respected. And we all have to face Him sooner or later. I hope to live past 100, but I can easily imagine this song going through my head as one of my last thoughts after a hard impact.

As a pilot, I do occasionally point out the act of jumping out of a perfectly good aircraft, but the truth is that I completely understand your view. We calculate risk before each flight because the excellent safety of flight is dependent of all those involved. We also spend most of our training preparing for that extreme minuscule chance that we could end up in a situation where a pilots judgment could mean the difference between walking away, being lifted away or not walking away at all.

The soldier in 1917 singing this, was basically saying that at this point, all his loved ones were gone. During the time that the movie takes place, people were lucky to get to be 50. So the soldier is saying that he basically has nothing left in this world.

Probably one of the best things that Rachel Hardy has is her feelings toward the song she sings. She sings them as if they were about her, from her personal standpoint. Your voice is one of the few things that can make me cry consistently. This song, just... Wow. Keep up your work. It's beautiful.

I love it, this is so different from the Longest Johns' version (which I also love). Strong Enya vibes with this one.

Also, I would love to hear you sing We Will Go Home from the King Arthur movie. As a veteran that wanted to go home after so many times away and still looking for "home", that short scene hits me deeply. Just a thought :)
