My grandfather was wounded in 1917 on the Western Front, Sommes. Gas. He was only 18, served in the Royal Artillery. Worked with horses. Bigger than life: (him, but also the horses, lol) lived to almost 60, survived a devastating coal mine cave-in where he had to a cut off his own leg to get out in time. Used a car with a special cane. They just don't make guys like that anymore. Btw, he was conscripted, not everyone volunteered. I was born just before he died and never met him.

Beautiful cover! " Popularized by the movie '1917', "Wayfaring Stranger" is a folk and gospel song that likely originated in the early 19th century. I'm a licensed skydiver. Statistically, it's not as dangerous as most people imagine. But I've been to funerals for fellow jumpers. A lot of people would say that we're stupid. Truth is, we're not reckless or naive. Most of us make a lot of effort to get away with what we do, and we have a complex relationship with Death. The Reaper's a bastard, but an enemy to be respected. And we all have to face Him sooner or later. I hope to live past 100, but I can easily imagine this song going through my head as one of my last thoughts after a hard impact.

As a pilot, I do occasionally point out the act of jumping out of a perfectly good aircraft, but the truth is that I completely understand your view. We calculate risk before each flight because the excellent safety of flight is dependent of all those involved. We also spend most of our training preparing for that extreme minuscule chance that we could end up in a situation where a pilots judgment could mean the difference between walking away, being lifted away or not walking away at all.
