My Great Grandfather served in WW2 as well. The song gives me the same feelings that you have. A hope that one day, I will be reunited with my great grandparents, my grandpas, my dog, and everyone else I care about. That day is inevitable, and while I will be sad when I leave this world, I'll be with the ones I love forever, Then, I'll have all the time to be with them.

The printed version of the song does indeed originate in English in the American South in the 1850's however it is likely a song that came over with Scots-Irish settlers who came to Appalachia in 18th century. The song in its current form can be traced to Central Appalachia to about 1784 where the American Pioneers sang it as a hymn.

Probably one of the best things that Rachel Hardy has is her feelings toward the song she sings. She sings them as if they were about her, from her personal standpoint. My grandfather was wounded in 1917 on the Western Front, Sommes. Gas. He was only 18, served in the Royal Artillery. Worked with horses. Bigger than life: (him, but also the horses, lol) lived to almost 60, survived a devastating coal mine cave-in where he had to a cut off his own leg to get out in time. Used a car with a special cane. They just don't make guys like that anymore. Btw, he was conscripted, not everyone volunteered. I was born just before he died and never met him.
