Country Music has never been the same since we lost Waylon Jennings, and every time we lose someone as profound and great as Waylon, the earth gets knocked a little more off its axis. These people just can’t be replaced no way, no how.

Please tell Barry an extra thank you from a huge waylon fan, people like Barry keep the real side of country artist life alive , after all, artists are people like me, the average person but sometimes we forget that because we are truly not connected to them as human beings, it's interviews like this that keep life in perspective, I hope that that comes across the way I want it to, thanks Otis

I opened up for Keith just several weeks before he passed. They had just done the Austin City Limits show and everyone in the band were excited about it. I remember the bass player had more Haggard albums than I did. LOL Keith would have been a super star, so sad, but happy I got to see him there at Rockefellers.

“I’m over you” is one of his best. So are a dozen others I could name. One of Waylon’s band mates made the claim that Wa-Tash-A (Waylon) stated that Keith Whitley was the greatest voice in country music at the time of Keiths untimely passing .?! We all know and accept George Jones in that role, but hell Waylon might’ve been mad at Jones at the time or maybe Waylon meant the greatest out of all of the new singers coming along, Alan Jackson, Clint black, Tim McGraw, Travis Tritt, and so many more I forget bc of poor memory, but I choose to believe like myself, Waylon meant Keith Whitley was going to be the next George Jones, Hank Williams, bc I loved Keith and he was special.

I'm fro Keith's hometown of Sandy Hook, Kentucky. I was a kid at the time Keith was with J.D. Crowe and he used to come to my aunt's house and folks would get together and play bluegrass and country music all weekend long. I played with Keith's nephews after high school. I still speak to Keith's brother Dwight now and then. We still feel the loss to this day as I do Waylon Jennings. I love this channel.

One of my best buddies died of an overdose the day after the 30th anniversary of Keith Whitley’s death at age 38. We were sardonically joking via text the day of the anniversary that we were on a commemorative bender in his honor (sad and stupid I know). The next morning one of our friends found him dead on the kitchen floor. Now every year I have back to back reminders of the perils of dancing to close to the edge. RIP to the legends and the lessers.

!00 Oaks Mall opened in 1967. Because of the Beatles, just about every department store at that time had electric guitars. Sears, JC Penny, Western Auto, Woolworths. Woolco in 100 Oaks Mall was no exception. They had a huge selection of off brand guitars, amps, and basses. Our family visited 100 Oaks just as soon as it opened and shopped there often after that. My younger brother and I would always head straight to the music department to check out the guitars. We went there one night and there was a stage set up in the music department. About 10 minutes later the band came on. It was Waylon Jennings and the Waylors. Although I'm a native Nashvillian, I wasn't a fan of country music at the time and had never heard of Waylon Jennings. They started to play. It was great. Fender amps, Fender guitars, and drums. They kicked ass. When they took a break my brother and went over and tried to hang out around them. The drummer Richie Albright talked to us for most of their break. I was 12 and my brother was 10 and for him to take time to talk to us was really cool.

I ran into Waylon way out on the road in middle America once. I came around the corner at a truckstop not paying close attention and litterally bumped into him as he rounded the corner from his tour bus! I immediately knew it was him and it was like all the blood left my brain and extremeties... like i was in a 6G fighter pilot barrel roll. Suddenly i could barely get a word out... i was like, "...oh my God, you're... I cant believe... he very graciously smiled, put his hand on my shoulder and said, "its ok son, I'm glad to meet you too!" Love his boys Struggle and Shooter too... they're standing in some big shoes! God Bless!

Keith was my cousin. I never met him he died before I was born, but my Dad shared the stage with him in the 70’s when his bluegrass band opened up for him when he was with Ralph Stanley. They reconnected in the late 80s and he was going to come to a family reunion but didn’t get to make it. His brother Dwight is still alive and we play music together sometimes. He’s insanely talented. It’s tragic what happened to Keith. Just remember, unfortunately, it’s no one’s fault but Keith’s that he’s gone early. Not Lori’s, not anyone else’s. He had a very large demon he just couldn’t beat. Alcoholism runs very deep in the Whitley family, and every Whitley male in our genealogy has struggled with it including myself. Most of us either got sober or are still drinking or drank until they died from it. It got Keith and it still hurts our hearts.

Hoss - I heard/saw Waylon with and without Willie several times in Austin when he was really hot. Then, there was a decade with no Waylon gigs locally. Finally he came through and played a concert in the park. Nice show but Waylon was no longer walking and needed lots of help getting to the stage. Played the concert sitting down. Great vocals and guitar and a large band including Jesse. It was sad seeing him it bad shape but it was a fitting farewell show.

I have to say that I so admire this man's skill on keyboards and accordian. When I first heard him play on one of the KZbin things they did I did not know they were married. I could not believe how perfectly they fit together, then later that day I saw that they were married and thought good. I like the stories about Waylon but I am not surprised about what he says about Waylon, it fits the picture of Waylon I have always had in my mind. I love the story Sharon Vaughn tells about first meeting Waylon at his studio, she took him "My Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys" and how Billy Joe Shaver finally got Waylon to listen to his songs.

Telling you my favorite Waylon Jennings song would be next to impossible- I love ALL of his songs- and your favs change- sometimes I will get hooked on a song and listen to it over and over, then another day it might be another song that I am hooked on. The latest Waylon tune that I've been partial too is "The Hank Williams Syndrome". I rediscovered the cassette tape "Too Dumb For New York City and Too Ugly For LA" when I was cleaning out a cupboard in my game room- a tape that I purchased the day he released that album back in the early 90s. Hadn't heard it for some years, so I popped it in my old tape deck and have been playing it over and over! But as you know, Waylon Jennings doesn't do a BAD song, so I have hundreds of favorite Waylon Jennings songs!!

Aww, great (and sad) stories thank you Barry. The club where Waylon got his big start in Phoenix was JD's. He's still mourned here in AZ like we just lost him. Jessi is very loved and appreciated, raising funds for diabetes, genetic research and she put out an album recently. Funny you should mention Don Williams because he too was very loved on the rez, but you're right, The Hoss was the man there♥ KTNN (The Navajo Nation) in Window Rock, plays the best country music in the world. My favorite Waylon Jennings song is a very early one, Leavin' Town. Well, Highwayman too.

Favorite Waylon song???man there’s so many just depends on the mood I reckon I do have lonesome,on’ry & mean tattooed on my back as well as the Waylon logo on my arm, I have listened to Waylon for years I was a young kid about 12 went to spend a week with my uncle Kenneth he drove a truck & I rode around with him. I found a Waylon cassette tape in the glovebox . I ask my uncle who’s this? I knew of Waylon from the dukes.my uncle took that cassette put it the tape deck & cranked it up. I was hooked from the moment I heard that Waylon thump that his music was known for. I was hooked from that moment on.the cassette was his greatest hits. I had to buy a copy for myself.when we moved in with my granny.she had cable.& the 1st music video I ever saw was the conversation with Waylon & Hank jr.my girl is into Waylon as much as I am.lately the 2 songs I have been playing for her Waylon’s lesser known song from Harley Davidson & the Marlboro Man movie hardline great great love song & the song I got a couple more years on you & that’s all.because she’s a little worried about our age difference. I told her Waylon has an answer for your concerns baby.just figured I’d share some of my experiences with Waylon’s music over the years.

Perhaps(...) mu favourite Waylon song is If 'Ol Hank Could Only See Us Now. Not only does it back up his healthy irreverence for the Nashville establishment but it has a super duper DRIVING rhythm and tempo!

The people around Waylon were probably very nice. Once we saw him at Billy Bobs, where we were out at the periphery, which was standing room. Someone in the crew came over and asked if we would like to be at Waylon's table. We gladly squeezed in.
