I diddn't know you were a big Ali fan! Jim Lampley the former HBO boxing commentator recently said in an interview that the best line of boxing commentary he ever heard was from Mick Jagger of all people. They were in a conference room at ABC studios in New York watching Muhammad Ali vs Larry Holmes. Everyone knew what the outcome was gonna be because Ali was much older, and as Holmes was delivering the beatdown on Ali, Mick leaned over to Jim and said "Lamps, do you know what we're watching here?" Jim said "No Mick, what are we watching?" and he said "It's the end of our youth." Thought that was a nice little tidbit to share, great video!

There were two Telecasters that Waylon used, one had a black guard and the other was a white guard. Jessie and Scooter have them both. The others were from a short Custom Shop production run in the 90s. Cheers!

Correct, there were two he used, but there were other (maybe 1 or 2) early 50’s teles that were almost identical, one was purchased by Nicole Kidman for Keith Urban. But those two you refer two the same ones Waylon and Johnny can be seen playing in Ain’t no good chain gang I believe. A TVshow with them.

I met Muhammad Ali in about 1993. I got his autograph and my picture taken with him. Muhammad and I faced each other with raised fists for the photo. He was an absolute gentleman. I’ll never forget it.

Sounds like a lot of "bargains" at that estate sale! I can't believe the car and Hank's boots didn't go higher and that Buddy's motorcycle didn't sell for 50K. That's crazy.

I've got that Waylon book but it's on cassette tape and it's abridged. The cool part is that Waylon actually narrates it. It's like listening to hours of Dukes Of Hazzard voice overs. I think Marty Stuart may own those Hank Williams boots. If I'm not mistaken he has a picture of them in his book Country Music: The Masters. When I was growing up in the 70s the Holy Trinity was Elvis, Evil and Ali.

Great post! That Buddy Holly story needs to be in a movie about his life. I got to see Porter and Dolly together back around 1960 or so on a package show. That Nudie suit blew my 10 year old mind. I tell all my friends ( and random strangers) about your channel Otis. It’s what KZbin should be, informative and entertaining .

I just saw an interview with Shooter Jennings. He said that Waylon had a number 1 and a number 2 that he and his mother still owned. The number 1 was initially a gift from his band and over the years it was heavily modified with active pickups etc. . His number 2 was actually mostly a stock telecaster. They were both butterscotch under the leather.

Yes. There are for sure A-Lot of Ali memorabilia floating around, which of course makes authenticating more difficult and devalues the items individually. Ali, like Elvis, knew his standing. They were generous, and wanted you to have something. So, lots of gloves & robes, and lots of scarves & rings

So Shooter was just interviewed by fender about these custom shop, master builds of Waylon’s guitar. He didn’t say how many of the leather bound telecaster is they have. But he did say they still have number one and number two which she almost exclusively use live he said. So that new master build is a combination between number one and number two. They designed by taking elements that they liked a lot from each. Shooter also definitely said that the number one and two are never leaving the family. I thought those were the only two so I’d be curious to see how many either work and which ones sold.

Thank you Otis for the rabbit hole excursion and report, the Beatles were very much like The Marx Brothers and had their wit to match. It was an afternoon show with Johnny Cash with The Carter Family, Carl Perkins, The Statler Brothers, and The Tennessee Three. I was fifteen. I attended many concerts in the years following, but one that remains my favorite out of all of them.

In the mid 90’s I had a small demo studio at 1017 16th. Ave. Called Dixie Dogg Music Group. We had a chance to buy some equipment from Waylon’s studio, so I bought two studio monitors and an old reel to reel Teac wood 2trk. Recorder. Can’t remember how much but it had to be cheap price for me to be able to buy it. Did use the two trk. much but used the monitors a lot. Our studio was across the street from the Idle Hour.

hi sir!: i caught your content @ Billy Joe Shaver. it's by way of Eddy's playing that i know anything about the Shaver clan. i caught a dwight clip (little sister) filmed on the tonite show, waaaay back in the last century. Ive been an admirer of eddy ('s playing) ever since. that leads me to ask if you have any interest in a Eddy Shaver tribute episode?.. it would appear that you were a friend of theirs, you mentioned eddy several times in your clip about his dad, & your content reeks of honesty & integrity so, for me, your well-equipped to provide in-depth @ Ed Shaver & where he couldve gone with his playing.. any consideration, regardless of outcome, will be appreciated. thanks for your time!

Here's a bit more about Buddy's motorcycle from "Saving Country Music" website, from 10/2014: "The crown jewel and center of interest at this weekend’s auction of the Waylon Jennings estate at the Musical Instrument Museum in Phoenix, AZ was the 1958 Ariel Cyclone motorcycle once owned by Waylon’s mentor Buddy Holly and given to Waylon on his birthday in 1979. Though early reports had the motorcycle not reaching the auction reserve with a bid of $375,000, and other reports said it sold for $450,000, Saving Country Music has confirmed with Guernsey’s Auctioneers that the bike indeed did sell eventually, and for a whopping $457,500. Though the high bidder currently remains anonymous, Lindsey Heller at Guernsey’s was able to confirm the eventual destination of the bike. 'I can tell you that the buyer is from Lubbock, TX, and that it’s his intention to ride it once, and then take it straight to the Buddy Holly Museum and put it on long-term loan." Lubbock is Buddy Holly’s hometown and right down the road from Waylon’s hometown of Littlefield. The two music stars met in Lubbock in the 1950’s."
