Steve Earle gets the credit for writing the great tune and he sings it well too, but I think Waylon just sings the best version!! ...Great share Eddie...Thank you so much!!

Waylon is so under rated. Even, Willie has to tip his hat to Jennings. He was an old school cowboy but with a modern, creative talent. Clearly learned a lot from Buddy. RIP to both of them.

What a combination, the great talented writing of Steve E and Waylon's top singing, both strong individuals in their own right! Thanks, Eddie Bear :-)

@teddie488 I think I remember Steve saying in an interview that this was the first cover of one of his songs that he cared about. Must have been cool for a young songwriter to have Waylon do his song. This came out right around the time as Guitar Town, so Steve was still an unknown writing songs for others.

@mtmx7 Cash recorded it, but it is originally by Steve Earle. Waylon's version was the first released, though. Steve had done it on a record that was never released (before he broke through with Guitar Town), but he didn't released it until 1988 on Copperhead Road. Cash's version was years later on Unearthed.

The Highwaymen recorded it together on The Road Goes On, but as far as I know only Waylon and Cash did solo versions.

In order, here's who I think have done the best covers of this great Steve Earle tune: The Highwaymen, this version by Waylon Jennings, the Johnny Cash electric version--all are great. Oddly enough, the versions I don't really dig are the ones by Steve Earle himself.

@Rustina61 Nope, on Ch. 5.3 (ThisTV; which plays mostly movies) in Los Angeles, a couple of months ago. Unfortunately, didn't get to see the beginning of the movie, but I just checked their website and it says that the next rerun is on Oct 20th, so I plan on watching it than. Thanks for your time.

The lyrics are "Trial was in the morning and they drug me out of bed." "Drug" is past tense of "drag" (though grammatically incorrect). Steve Earle's lyrics are all on a fan site - unofficial Steve Earle. I don't think Waylon changes any.

Steve brought plenty of life to it as well. Why the need to minimize the original?

That's just my opinion. I think Steve Earle is a great talent and didn't "minimize" him in any way.

Not sure what grammar has to do with freedom... but I was responding to a question about the lyrics to someone who I believe is is learning English, so added that explanation.

You seemed to be suggesting there was no "life" in the orginal. That seems like minimizing it to me, but maybe it was just an unintentional phrasing.
@darlincommitme
@darlincommitme 12 жыл бұрын
You are right, that wasn't explicitly racist. But given the general hatred you expressed, I made that assumption. Had you written a thoughtful response instead of calling names, I would have given the benefit of the doubt.

The "devil's right hand" was written by Earle but it was sung better by Jennings. I lost all respect for Earle when he turned into leftist and condemned guns.

In my first comment? Yes maybe i was a little rude and apology for that but it was also insulting to me because i sometimes use the phrase "dragged" and many other SLANG words.
@darlincommitme
@darlincommitme 12 жыл бұрын
The original post was a simple question of what the word meant from someone The fact that he/she does not understand slang is not an insult to you in any sense, nor is it an insult for me to explain the grammar, as I made no negative comments about the use of slang. (Especially since the person is not from an English speaking country.) You took it way to personally and attacked the original post. The remaining conversation was not even about the grammar.

The comment simply asked for clarification on the lyrics, and you toss out insults as well as getting in a a little racism. You give Texans a bad name.

"Leave it to those who can?" Get over yourself. In my experience, people who have to prove they are smarter than someone else on a forum like youtube usually are overcompensating. And unless youare a linguistic scholar, which I doubt, I don't think one example (rap) proves any point. In any case "free" is an empty form in a philosphical sense and as such, your statement is vague and unsupported. Enough.
