Backyard Guitar Tech Tip: A great, inexpensive substitution for expensive fret files is a set of Welding Torch Tip Cleaners. They're a set of serrated, stainless steel wires. They come in a set like feeler gauges. They're calibrated to 1/1000in. You'll get about 30 different sizes in a set. A good set will only run you about $10.

Never having been able to afford to have work done on my guitars, I've resorted to set them up myself for the most part, and I've learnt by doing it because I've had good , and bad results. Because of this I've avoided doing trickier things like filing the nut slots or working on the frets, so I'm happy , always , to learn something new . Good video, which was easy to follow for a mechanophobe such as me.

Hey Waylon. I haven't tried it yet but I plan to literally tomorrow and I'll try to remember to let you know how I get on with it. I'm going to buy a set of automotive feeler guages. I'm going to slide the whole bunch out of the little housing and run some large grit sandpaper over one edge to rough them up. That should give me the ability to create straight edged "files" that I can mix and match to a specific width that I can then use to "file" a nut slot at an exact width. I think it could work as a nut file replacement. Sure it's not diamond coated but it should be straight, flat and a very accurate width. I think it could work. I'll let you know as I have a new acoustic that needs some work and I was just about to drop $60 on a set of files for it. I think I'll spend $5 instead and see how she goes. Love your channel. Thanks for the inspiration.

I’ve been using these techniques for years now and so good to see a pros take on them 👍 my setups are a little different though as most of my guitars have floating bridges and a huge PITA to setup intonation without the right tools. Do you have any tips for setups with floating bridges? P.s. say hi to Gilly for me next time you see him 😁

Ive always wondered if a string just sitting in the nut would naturally file the nut slots down over time. Thank you !

Can you do a video on nut setup in a locking nut? I was told I had to compromise as they just are what they are when it comes to radius options. I can get the low and high e to be great but the others are higher
