Wayne Shorter's Love Affair with Brazilian Music featuring Herbie Hancock and Milton Nascimento

One of Wayne Shorter's favorite collaborators was the Brazilian composer and singer Milton Nascimento. Their 1975 recording, Native Dancer is considered of the great amalgams of Jazz and Brazilian music. Sadly, they didn't play together often in public. From Live Under the Sky in 1992, one of the great Japanese festivals, we are treated to Milton's composition, Don Quixote, played by Nascimento with Herbie Hancock on piano, Wayne Shorter on soprano saxophone, Stanley Clarke on bass and Robertinho Silva on drums.

Beautiful! Native Dancer turned me on to Milton's music and I have been a fan ever since. I did get to see Milton and Wayne play together once. They were both playing the 1990 Montreal Jazz Fest. I saw Wayne's band the night before and then Wayne sat in with Milton and his band the following night.

Thanks yet again Bret. I actually bought "Native Dancer" in 1975, but wasn't impressed. It's still in my vinyl collection but either I've matured to like it, or your current offering is just BETTER! Lovely as always to hear HH in lyrical mode, even though here he's NOWHERE NEAR "pushing the envelope": this is neither his Chameleon period nor indeed his superb Parallel Realities collaboration with Jack DeJohnette and Pat Metheny 16 years later! Lively also is Wayne's deeply felt solo, firmly "recapitulating" Stan Getz's 1964 excursion and -- in my opinion -- FIRMLY putting Getz himself IN THE SHADE.
