Since I was a teenager in the 80s, I've been putting eyeshadow on over foundation. I never powdered first. I don't think eye primer was even a thing back then. I also put my blush on before I put powder on my face. It "sticks" better that way and I find doing powder over blush softens the look and helps it stay. It just works better that way for me. No one taught me to do it that way. It just came from experimenting.

I was taught this by a model in the early '80's - I have always wondered why the powdering trend happened - just makes it easier for the eyeshadow to slide off. Powdering the base before adding your eyeshadow just totally defeats the purpose of the primer/cream base/foundation really imo... I love that you're bringing this knowledge back!! (P.S. We also did the heat the eyeliner pencil tip with a lighter for an instant trick too that I saw in one of your vids - love that these old timey tips are making the circuit once more!! ) Good advice never goes out of style!!! ^_^

Weren't we all doing this about 10 yrs ago? I had one of those IKEA Alex dressers and I had EVERY color of the cream eye shadows that were from Nyx? Weren't they Nyx? They were pencils, but there was a way to get them out of the pencil and into a little pot. I looked on their site and they have a "cream pigment" that seems similar, but they're all glitter. I think maybe BH Cosmetics had some too? Marlena Stell still uses that one Mac paint pot to prime her eyelids before shadow and it's cream too. She was big on KZbin around that time too.

Thats the way I do my eye-makeup since years. And yes, I also do contour, blush and brozener first, then, if I need it, setting-powder and after that setting-spray. I need to give this technique a try, I always set my eyeshadow primer with powder which is kinda pointless since it doesn't make my eyeshadow pop or last longer, but I always asumed that applying eyeshadow on top of still- wet primer would make it muddy or simply hard to blend, but my super hooded eyes need extra help to get a decent eyeshadow look... I'm old so I knew this from when I learned how to do makeup back in the 1970's. Also, The order people apply makeup now just makes no sense to me. When I learned how to do makeup we cleansed, toned, moisturized, concealer, foundation (I don't remember having primer in my teens and 20's), waterline liner, brows, eye shadow, lid liner, contour, blush, powder, lip liner, lipstick, gloss. If you had fallout from your eyeshadow you cleaned it up and reapplied foundation / concealer. And the trick to a party all night mouth was apply lipliner, powder, reapply lipliner, apply lipstick, powder, apply lipliner, lipstick then gloss, The gloss may need to be reapplied during the day / evening, but the lipstick was going nowhere.

Wayne, I've been doing that since I started wearing makeup and I'm 61 years old. I started wearing makeup pretty young and got into cosmetology as a career. Now that I am 61 my issue is the transfer of eyeliner. It doesn't seem to matter what type I use or if I seal it with powder or smudge it or whatever. I look into the mirror and there is and eyeliner transfer above my eyelid. Sometimes it's so dark it looks like I applied it like that. I have a condition that causes me to perspire, particularly my head. Because of that I'm super conscious of applying my eyeliner and attempting to keep it in place but nothing works! What I found works the best is something like Physicians Formula that comes with a built-in brush and is waterproof however I am too old to wear cat eyes or a sharp line. I definitely need something. My eyelashes are much like yours they are very straight and must be curled but even after that it's not enough to give my eyes any pop. It looks younger and cleaner to have a nice smudgy looking liner and very little shadow. I wonder if you could address this or maybe it's not common enough.
@jenvo28912 жыл бұрын
I have super oily eyelids and the only "liner" that actually stays put on me is using an eyeshadow stick like the expensive Laura Mercier eye caviars, mid priced Kiko Milano eyeshadow sticks (just not the burgandy one) or the affordable E.L.F eyeshadow sticks smudged with an eyebrush. You can set with a powder eyeshadow if desired but most of the shades from the brands mentioned above dont necessarily need it unless its an extra emollient shade. Good luck to you if you try this tip!
@lucyw.75972 жыл бұрын
maybe we were told this method back then ..Im 58 and ive always just used a base of a tiny dab of foundation and put shadow straight on to it...i find eyeliner too harsh now too.... i tend to just use a tiny line of dark shadow, usually a very dark brown, i find black is a bit too harsh as well..i do it in little dots, then smudge the dots together, i find i get a softer line like that...the only make up tutorial I ever had was my mum sending me & my friend to one at the local WI in about 1978...we came back looking appalling..and about 50! .all green eyeshadow & orange lipstick!
@onestep2dee2 жыл бұрын
I think he recommends tight lining the upper waterline with a pencil eyeliner--preferably waterproof--making sure to get in between the lashes. He just didn't do that in this particular tutorial. As for the transfer, that happens to me too because of my oily eyelids. I absolutely have to powder my primer (even the P. Louise) or shadows will crease, fade, and I will get transfer like crazy. I use waterproof pencils, not liquid. I just prefer the softer look at my age (61) than a harsh line. If I do use a liquid liner I swear by Stila's Stay All Day Waterproof liquid liner and I use brown or any color they have except black. My favorite pencils are Mac's Color Excess Gel Liners, Milk Makeup (my personal favorite and finally back in stock after 2 years) Infinity Long Lasting Waterproof. Charlotte Tilbury's eye pencils are wonderful too! I use these brands mostly to tight line or to smudge on the lower lashline. Revlon's Color Stay pencils are good for the upper lashline but not quite as good these as high end brands and don't work at all for tight lining. To get the same intensity of shadows and blending, I use setting spray for shimmers/metallics and love Natasha Denona's cream to powder formula.
@vlrissolo2 жыл бұрын
@@onestep2dee I'm familiar with everything you are saying. ONLY WATERPROOF! I have rather large features and a tight line is not enough, but I will often do it out of necessity. I use physicians' formula for that. it doesn't smudge and has the lash growth formula that actually works. It was compared to KVD's liner which I like so I tried it. Much like you, I like the smudged look noW that I too am 61! I normally skip the lower lashes all together. Yesterday I used my favorite non-smudging pencil and powdered it in with matching shadow. I looked pretty good, until on my way home when I caught a glimpse of my eyes in the rear-view mirror!!! HELP!!! I hate false lashes more that I can say. Even the semi-perm. ones are wonky looking and being our age, lash division is a big deal to me. I can't take that gluey, clumpy mess, however with tedious work, they do help the problem, just not worth thr time and mishaps. I'll try setting with more translucent powders over the smudge and where it transfers. I will re=read you message since we have similar issues. Thank you for your time and advice.., it ain't easy getting old!
