I love this channel. Big fan of the lady's German nostalgia. The gentleman's ingenuity is a treasure -- Ive learned so much. Would be nice to know the blow-ins are learning about Ireland's soul also. Maybe some participation in the struggling cultural renaissance? The Irish language is a treasure. She's a beautiful language, and the traditional culture, despite the famine poverty of landlord-driven austerity, has lots of fascinating secrets and gems: "meitheal" among them. Great teachers both of you. Sláinte agus beannaċt.

I agree with L Johnson. Citrus and mint based plants are great repellents. We have lemon balm and lemon scented geraniums that we just rub on our skin. Also, got a hummingbird feeder and our mosquitoes have disappeared. Read hummingbirds feed on small insects when feeding young.

We call midges blackflies. One year there was apparently perfect breeding/hatching conditions and you had to run from the car to the house due to the constant swarm. Even when the door of the car was open for just a couple of seconds the next time we went out the car would be full of the little buggers. I feel for the horses as well, our dog would have his belly full of fly bites when only out for a pee....horrible horrible horrible. Hats off to you for attempting to work in the midst of them, might i suggest a flame thrower. :)

Yes, been a good year for midges in Lancashire too, one of the insects that thrives while grasshoppers, crickets, butterfly decline, no swallows this year either, first time in recollection of octogenarian neighbours & probably good for honey bees, but I deeply miss the swallows.

Great to see the horses at work. Thanks for posting this. I make my own insect repellant from essential oils in a rapeseed oil carrier: roughly 2 parts rosemary and 1 part each of cedar, cinnamon, eucalyptus and peppermint in 30 parts carrier oil + 20 parts rubbing alcohol. Works a treat, smells great and is super value for money compared to commercial sprays.

Hi guys. I really enjoy your videos. Tim, if you have already considered this then read no further. Other, if you have logs which might be too big for your bandsaw, you could take 50mm (or whatever it takes) off one side of the log and then flip it 90 degrees. Your log is narrower than it was and you haven't really lost much if anything of the available sawn timber.

Wonderful! Makes my day when there is another video from my favourite channel! As you've already discovered, those snaphooks you're using at 0:11, are not horse-drawn friendly. You need MUCH heavier hooks than this. Preferably, forge some 15mm rod S-hooks yourself ! (YT video opportunity.) They would be ideal for this job. Those other clips are only meant for running along ropes, not for taking any weight. They are dangerous around horses & dogs on lead ropes too, as the sharp edges can get caught and attached on fences, wire, fingers, etc with nasty results.
@WayOutWestx27 жыл бұрын
You're right - but the ones we want are not easily available and they're pricey. Only very rarely do we have any trouble with the ones we use..
@rubygray77497 жыл бұрын
When I bought my first draught horses and was assembling harness, I bought those clips too, and very soon found they were pulled out of shape, and deformed so they wouldn't open either. Had to be removed with boltcutters. My oldtime farming mentor scoffed at these things and sent me off to get some "hessocks" (S-hooks) made by an engineering firm. They are always open at both ends so can be slipped off in a crisis. But I know Tim that you are well able to forge your own! It would be the work of moments for you! And a valuable asset especially now that you are logging with such heavy loads.

Thanks for your encouragement, Ruby. It would be a nice project, alright...

do you know what? I often think with all the beautiful animals and things that are endangered in the world there is never any fear of the midges being extinct.Scientists find all kinds of ways of curing all kind of terrible diseases and they have no way of really stopping the midges from coming around without spraying yourself with stuff that is probably more harm to you than the midges bites themselves. One time they even found me on the ocean on a very calm evening , we all had to hide under deck and leave dad steer us ashore.The bog is another place they are very fond of they lie and wait and plan their attack there.

They resemble what the eastern US folk call blackflies, I would imagine they're called that elsewhere I just know what I know them as, and man they do suck....literately. Thanks for the wonderful video.
@WayOutWestx27 жыл бұрын
That's a different fly, Duncan, I think. Our are really small. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Midge (I understand that large areas of Canada were considered impossible for Europeans to survive in, not because of the cold, but because of the black flies)
@63256325N7 жыл бұрын
Well I can certainly believe that. The blackfly is a ravenous little bugger for sure. I lived in Maine for half my life and I'd buy OFF insect repellant by the case during blackfly season. I should remember just when it started but I'll be darned if I can, mid Spring, perhaps, burying bad memories. lol. Lasted just a couple weeks or so, thank goodness, not the entire summer. The little tiny ones, midges, didn't bite just few into the eyes and mouth. Pain in the butt.
@63256325N7 жыл бұрын
The blackfly I speak of is quite small also, not a whole lot bigger than the midge. If you google "Maine blackfly" you'll see what I mean. Do an image search to see the results of being bitten as well as what they look like. ~

@mossy1s7 жыл бұрын
Way Out West Blow-in blog That's very true but in all your previous videos everyone you work with has an English accent, it didn't surprise me at first until it kept happening so I was getting suspicious that the farm was not really in Ireland and maybe you were just saying that as a decoy. I've seen other KZbinrs do stuff like that so people won't know their location.
@WayOutWestx27 жыл бұрын
Ha! I see. Good plan. We didn't think of that and now it's too late. Though lots of people assume we're talking about the west of the States. We'll include more Irish accents to confuse them : - )

Sooo, you think your horses weigh 450kg each did I catch that right? Or where you referring to the weight they could pull? Somehow, I have a really hard time believing they weigh so little. Surely such a heavy breed weighs more than a big pony like perhaps the icelandic horse? I would guess around 800kg for each of them. :D
@WayOutWestx27 жыл бұрын
We haven't actually weighed them - but we hope to do that soon. So we're going on comparisons with other horses and our vet's best guess. These are really small heavy horses.
