If a bear is that close to the walking stick , he’s going to use it as a toothpick after he’s done with you lol😅

It depends on the size of the bear and the size of the man with the spear.

@@WayPointSurvival I would think it also depends on how strong (resistant to bending or breaking) that skinny metal handle & blade are. Not to mention the attachment to the staff.

@@WayPointSurvival nah you want adequate protection from bears. You're getting a firearm and bear mace. Not some flimsy hollowed metal shaft. Maybe it'll work on snakes or could spear a fish however I wouldn't trust it with my life especially against bears or cougars.

Wow! A 21st century version of a shepherd's staff I saw when I was a kid. It was amazing! It had most of those things and it even had a flask and a shepherd's clock, a kind of ring-inside-a wheel sundial that not only told the time of day, but also the day and month. And could be used as a fishing pole, spear, or shepherd's slingshot. Those were very personalized by the user. Most shepherd's staffs were just a stick. Edit: I would replace the foam grip with leather boot laces and wrap the sections in paracord. You could probably get 200 feet or so on there and it wouldn't affect anything.
@WayPointSurvival2 жыл бұрын
Some good suggestions! Glad you enjoyed the video.
@carlosspeicywiener70182 жыл бұрын
@@WayPointSurvival It was great, as always. Fun and informative. But I just looked up the price and holy cow! I'll just stick with a solid stick and a field belt.
@captainfragger62952 жыл бұрын
Yes that smaller size paracord makes a really good hand cushion and you could get quite a bit of it if you went the full length of the stick. I use leather straps on my knife handles. But I have an old axe handle I wrapped in paracord. I didn't think it was worth my leather. But it really turned out to be pretty comfortable

Jim, a good addition that would fit inside could be an oven roasting bag. You can collect a large amount of water and the boil it suspended over a fire.
@WayPointSurvival2 жыл бұрын
Yes, that's a good idea. Thanks for watching.
@Ram-12312 жыл бұрын
You don't need to suspend. I've thrown water bottles right in the fire and on coals. The trick is simply to have almost no air in anything plastic for direct fire. Any sections that have remaining air will melt at a temperature a bit above the normal melting point of said plastic. However, I don't boil water for purification but rather for coffee or ramen, rice, etc. Thankfully, I've never had to purify water..... yet

My great grandfather, and former neighbor, both have passed on now, used walking sticks while walking. It helped them with balance and helped with things like snakes. In their day in eastern Kentucky, there was not all these paved roadways and good hiking trails like we see today. They spent much time in the great outdoors working,gardening, gathering firewood, overseeing their properties and etc. A good sturdy wooden stick to aid walking was much desired by some. Because of that, I'm a believer in having a good walking stick for balance and defense. Thanks for sharing.
@WayPointSurvival2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! Walking sticks were indeed very popular among people of bygone days. They were also in much better shape than we are today as a general rule.
@captainfragger62952 жыл бұрын
Oh yeah my grandmother was the same way. She hated snakes and she always carried a stick to whack at a bush or pin down a snake whenever I go walking I use a walking stick instead of my cane. From what I heard everybody commonly carried a walking stick way back in the days
@stephen8433 Жыл бұрын
For at least the last 15 years of my Dad's life he used a 48" long Bamboo walking stick. He had a cane patch out behind his workshop next to the woods so he always had a good cane walking stick.

Hello James how are you? I had seen them years ago, but I already had a custom staff made out of a grape vine with my name birth date and other engravings on it. Every year it gets straighter and longer as it unwinds. I think I may attach a threaded metal end that I can use for a fog gig or spear point but for right now it helps me go through rough terrain. I have used it to hold up a tarp in a plow point and a roll up stick on a super shelter and at one time I had a compass that was tied to the 5/50 cord I had on the handle for a grip but it stopped working and I removed it from the grip. It is not a versatile as the Crawford Survival Staff is. It is special to me it was a gift from my daughter. She gave it to me because she knew how much I liked the outdoors and I was recovering from having the swine flu and needed help with walking at the time.

I second your high recommendation of this staff! I have owned one for years. Pat Crawford and his son Wes are excellent craftsmen and fine people. You've given me some good ideas of items to stow in mine that I hadn't thought of. I have found when hiking that the joint in the center of the staff just below the foam piece will sometimes loosen up. I solved that by doing a tight paracord wrap starting just below the foam piece, over the joint and down another five or six inches. Solves the problem of that joint loosening up, gives me a few feet of paracord as part of my kit, and gives me another secure place to grip the staff (it can be slippery). I did the wrap in bright orange to make it easy to see the staff if I drop it and it bounces off the rocky outcrop where I like to hike. 😉
@WayPointSurvival2 жыл бұрын
Interestingly enough, I have never had any problem with any of the joints coming loose when hiking. However, I do like your solution!
@captainfragger62952 жыл бұрын
Well that's bound to happen, if you consider how it is used. You put it out in front and then touch the ground and as you step corded you lean on it which causes a twisting motion. It could loosen any of the lower screw on connections. That does not mean it will that's a chance is still there. Maybe a piece of black tape around the joint covering both sides around the connection would work pretty good. Something like black electrical tape. Just once around would do it.

@@WayPointSurvival yeah absolutely I was really optimistic about paying close to that price for something made in China cuz man you never know I'd way rather pay for something made in the US and you're supporting other Americans I'm not about supporting other countries when ours is in rough shape especially not right now. But if I can buy American I do buy American.

That is a cool piece of gear. I think it costs more than I would pay, but I'm handy enough to make a DIY version, maybe using some different materials. The blowgun darts were especially innovative along with that retractable blade/scalpel.

I understand, however, buying something that is this versatile, handmade and machined here in America is always going to cost more. Thanks for watching!

I LIKE IT ! It is super-multifunctional mini survival items + a blow gun and ammo= Perfect. I will let a good friend know about this because he prefers a Teepee-style tent that only requires one Trekking pole.👍

Yes, that would work really well for that type of shelter. Thanks for watching, my friend!

I think if you used the entire staff for the blow gun you could get more accurate long distance shots if my theory is correct. Also when it comes to fishing the strings out of the tubes, maybe you could hot glue the end into the cap so you could uncap, then pull everything out without needing the knife? Just a thought. But that is a damn nice hiking staff. Thanks for sharing

The top tube is blocked by a threaded section so you cannot use the entire length for the blow gun. Thank you for the other ideas and for watching the video.

James another great video. Very interesting hiking staff. Going to have to check it out. I also watched your latest Ohio Trip video. You have done a very good job on those. Is the series over or will there be more?

I just bought another walking staff, also made in the USA, for one third the cost, the tactical staff. It is also machined and is a very good competitor to your staff, having 12 or 13 tools, plus hollow space for your own kit additions. I like those small plastic tubes, and hope to find the same type to fit in my staff. These are so much better than some flimsy walking sticks and much more versatile. I took some martial art training a few years back called cane kungfu. And do agree any quick draw weapon to deter both 4 legged and 2 legged animals and keep them at bay, giving you time to get your pistol out is worthwhile.

A possible easy to find tube solution would be some of the plastic tubes that bullets for muzzleloading are often sold in.
