I feel the pain... I am now even more convinced the average luthier is trying to misinform beginners so they get frustrated and just go to a shop to set up. It worked on me, so props to them for making my life hell trying to wade through videos 2+ hours long of them just talking and repeating themselves over and over about how you MIGHT want to do intonation and how they have opinions and blah blah blah. Then I find this video where he explains all the basic in less than two minutes while giving solid advice. I get steamed thinking about all the time I wasted listening to professionals argue on forums about "neck relief" and "back-bow." IT IS NOT FRIGGIN' ROCKET SCIENCE DAMMIT, MEAT HEADS IN THE 80's WHO COULD NOT SPELL THEIR OWN NAMES WERE DOING PERFECT SETUPS WITH BASIC TOOLS. I DON'T CARE ABOUT 1/1000th OF AN INCH JUST SHOW ME HOW TO MAKE IT PLAY LIKE AN AVERAGE GUITAR. Apologies for the rage but it grinds my gears how much B.S. there is on this topic.

Thank you for your gift of wisdom, sensei. I especially appreciate the quick setup demo. I will be setting up my own guitars from now on whenever possible. In my personal experience, strings actually do expire if you live in a rough climate like Florida. I've bought strings in bulk and had them corrode in the package before I had the chance to put them on the guitar. To be fair, this does take a very long time. I would recommend coated strings to everyone because they are incredibly resistant to corrosion and maintain their bright sound a lot longer than regular strings. I also find that you don't need to change them nearly as often, so even though they are more expensive than regular strings, they save you money in the long run.
@SalmonFume4 жыл бұрын
True, I don't even know why people even bother with regular strings anymore. The coated ones are just superior. But people get scared or think it's a marketing trick. It isn't. They're just excellent and don't fuck up your frets.

I totally agree with buying a high-end instrument if you're serious about music. I'm a bassist (go on, mock me) and my first bass was a £219 Ibanez. Great bass, but nothing special. My dream bass was a Ric. I told my best mate about this, and he recommended I not buy it. He repeatedly said I should "climb the ladder" of basses. Spend £500, then £1000, and finally £1500, which is what my Ric cost. (SIDE POINT: Ric 4003s basses usually go for £2080, so I was getting an amazing deal.) My friend has been playing guitar for 20 years, and he's very very very good, (could go pro if he wanted, so I respect his opinion, but good with money he is not, so I had to ignore him on this one. I've had my Ric for 1.5 years now, and it was a great purchase. If I had bought a £500 bass, forcing myself to play that instead of what I actually wanted, I would be miserable and hoping I spent my money more wisely, getting what I actually wanted. I also would have spent £500 on a bass I would end up reselling, probably for only £300 or so. And if I bought a £1000 bass, I probably would have resold that for £600 or £700, wasting me more money. I had no intentions of wasting £600 or £700 on climbing the ladder of basses. Save up and buy what you want. Music is as much about inspiration as it is money. I repeat: get what you want.

the wait a week thing is defo a good bit of advice, when i was 17/18 i spent several months going to my favourite guitar shop and staring at one particular guitar - a 1980s Marlin K34KT Sidewinder, i was slowly saving up for it (it was £150 but i was dead broke...and i still am at 24), but one day it wasn't up on display anymore, someone else had bought it, I figured no biggy because i knew i was broke. fast forward to christmas and it turned out my mother was the one who bought it, since then, it has been my go-to guitar for gigging and recording ever since, and even to this day i could spend hours just staring at it

Hey, I am not sure if anyone else has mentioned that but you should ALWAYS check your intonation with guitar in playing position. When you lay it down with its head elevated as you pictured, you are actually shortening the guitar scale a little bit. After setting it up in this position your intonation will not be as perfect as you thought. Beside that, great video!
@onpsxmember6 жыл бұрын
I'd like to add that tightening the screws for intonation should be done with reduced string tension. It puts a lot of unnecessary force on the windings. If they're stripped you can't adjust them anymore. Loosening them is okay under string tension. (That is especially true if your bridge is on the cheap side). Same goes for the height adjustments on the individual saddles. If you screw them in to raise the saddle's height under tension, it might mess up the whole stability of that saddle since they rest on those tiny screws (fender style). There is a video called "How to do perfect guitar setups" form willseasyguitar. It's over an hour long and no matter if you got a floyd or a classic vibrato on there, everyone will learn what to do. Further, just checking on the 12th doesn't mean it's intonated. Checking several different octaves. Third and 15th...5th and 17th...The higher up, the better.

For setting up your guitar (especially for Strats): you can also go from 3 to 5 springs on the bridge. You can also put cigarette filters in the springs so they won't make that metallic sound anymore! You can also adjust your pickup heights as necessary too :) Great video, thanks!

The best investment I ever made was buying a $120 multi-effect pedal as a beginner. Experienced musicians usually want a whole pedalboard so they can mix their effects. That makes complete sense, but as a beginner it was super cool to have distortion, reverb, phaser, and all kinda other sounds to play around with without having to spend $1,000. None of the effects were the best quality but it introduced me to all the popular ones and allowed me to really broaden my horizons musically and experiment with different playing styles. If you’re a beginner, get a multi-effect pedal and go to town it’s super fun and allows you to reach outside your own style.

I can definitely attest to springing for the more initially expensive things. Spending more on cables has nothing to do with tone or anything, but how durable the connections are and how rugged they are. BUY A POWERED PEDALBOARD FOR YOUR PEDALS!!! Especially if you have a lot. Get a used SKB or Furman for ±$120 (basically a year's worth of 9Vs) and it's even better if you get one with 1/8" power jacks, since those cables are a lot cheaper than AC adapters (also, pedalboards won't shit the bed in the middle of a gig). Going for more corrosion-resistant strings is a great idea (Elixirs, Ernie Ball Prestige, etc) since you can get a lot more hours out of them (I change strings on my gigging guitars every 8 weeks or so with EB Prestiges, rather than every 2 with plain' old Slinkys). Another big thing: LEARN HOW TO PHYSICALLY STORE, TRANSPORT, AND PROTECT YOUR GEAR.

I’m gonna play devils advocate for #7. Sometimes you need to just jump on a purchase that you find instead of waiting. If you wait, you’ll regret not buying it when you had the opportunity to get it at that price, or it will simply never be available again. My experience in a music store has shown me countless examples of people being quite disappointed and even sad because something special had sold by the time they made the decision to buy it. I should have bought an OP-1 when they were in stock at 899. Now you can’t find them used much below 1,100.

Depends how much you play. I play an average of 10-15 hours a week. And i change my strings every 2 weeks. Any longer than that and the sound is just very uninspiring. A good tip is to wipe down your strings after you are done playing to get all the sweat and dead skin off. Makes them feel new for way longer.

My guitar store thankfully will do a free setup on any guitar bought from them.

mine, you can renew the warranty for another year for $15 to 20, and that includes a setup ($75). Do the math a used Prestige I got 5 years ago .... $17 warranty. I've needed a serious floyd rose setup (Ibanez Edge are actually floyds) twice. bring in, or or two days later. New strings and perfect setup.

"higher" .... are you taking into account Inflation? or current pricing ?
