Squiglypig No. it is true. It was a random factor to keep realism high. It would happen randomly and if you saved a few minutes before it you would likely survive. Ships sinking at sea, 🐊 jungle, disease , 🕷, and more WERE perils and risks of the time.

It's Sierra. That's pretty much how it worked. The game will ALSO kill you before you even start if you fail the copy protection quiz. @@Tigerman1138 The only disease that was random was cholera. Scurvy could be prevented by buying oranges and malaria by getting a mosquito net while still in Brooklyn.

@@Ambaryerno I know it's a meme, but Sierra games do not typically randomly kill people. Every death is because of something you did or didn't do. Except this game, apparently.

This may be the most Sierra game ever. Not only will it kill you completely at random and without warning, but it will even kill you BEFORE the game starts! (You left failing the copy protect out).

I remember how ticked off I was when I died of cholera...and the game let me walk around for about 6 screens anyway, giving me the illusion that I could do anything about it. D'oh!! I was like, "SERIOUSLY?!"

I remember watching my brother play this game when I was in elementary school. I recall the "jungle leaves like swords" and bandit-based deaths being particularly problematic for him.

Jarrod falls into the water so think of it in one of these ways: he cannot swim, he hits his head on the rocks and is knocked out, or there's no place to get out of the water because it's all in a raised area. In all three cases, he drowns.

That game is so cruel with it's random elements!!!! I already tried to do an LP of this with OOCloud and we never could finish it because there were so many tedious parts to go through!!! The mining, finding gold in the river, urgh!!!! Anyway, good job on finding most of the deaths :).

I tried the over land route so many times, but strangely the grass wouldn't grow, and I got stuck there. Now I learned, there's a bug in the game: the time stays still if you set the speed to FAST. Anyway. Excellent game.

@topazshot88 Yes, there are a few playthroughs in fact. Just be sure to add "Sierra" to the search. Best thing to do is type in "Gold Rush (Sierra) Let's Play - Part 1" You'll get the playthrough there.

I remember some of those deaths. Never thought a lot of them occured randomly. Such a great game. Also only game ever I took the time to read the manual. or better said the small history book about the gold rush

The ship was always the easiest path if I recall, you just had to eat lots of fruit on the voyage so you didn't die of scurvy.

That's not correct -- the random deaths are generated more-or-less right before they happen. You can just reload a save from a minute earlier, and most likely survive the next time.

I decided to look this game up on TVTropes after I saw this once. Apparently, the cholera and iceberg "nothing you can do" deaths are actually decided on as soon as the game begins. I appreciate the game being mostly true-to-form for cholera being a sudden killer, but that's still a huge dick move. (is there a playthrough of this game on KZbin already?)

Not really, as long as you saved before those screens loaded you could reload and have a decent chance of getting past them.

No. You can fail to leave on the boat but that's all that happens. Even if you purchase a boat ticket, wait till boat leaves and then buy a ticket for the stage coach it can be done. Since the coach never leaves without you, there is no death, nor a dead-end.

Wtf.. The death tune sounds very alike to the "They Might Be Giants" song about how you're older than you ever was and now you're even older. It's the part where it says "And now you're even older and now you're older still."
