By watching this video, it reminds me when I was a boy, my mum used the sewing machine, which was mechanic one, and the needle plate operation was controlled by feet pressing back and forwards. It made me so happy wearing these new clothes and pants when I was a boy. We were all poor back in 1970’s in China. It always has a very special memory for the rest of my life.

My parents have the similar one in the dining room and I am constantly pressuring them to throw it away because nobody is using it anymore. But I guess that it has some sort of sentimental value to my parents since they are reluctant to part with it.

Clothes were very expensive in Australia when I was growing up, because there were no cheap o/s imports. When I was in my teens I used to make a lot of my own clothes, because buying lovely and interesting fabric was much cheaper than purchasing the finished product.

@Ayufanboy01 Instead of throwing it away you should consider donating it to a thrift store or giving/selling it to someone. Some people like to use the vintage sewing machines as display items and others like using the older machines for their day-to-day sewing needs.

Always worth rescuing loved garments. I got my first pair of Levis when I was 15. Four years later there were two holes in the crotch and my mother wouldn't let me wear them so I got my aunt (who trained as a seamstress) to chop them to cut-offs and patch the holes with the leg material. Roll forward another five years and I was still wearing them on and off until my girlfriend blagged them while we were travelling around Spain. We chopped a deep V in the back to make them fit and again she wore them on and off for years. My youngest daughter then found them in an old trunk and now SHE has them. 55 year old Levi red tabs - they don't make them like that any more!

In India we call it Rafoo. It is done very often as our traditional outfits are loose and flowing and do get ripped off when stuck in some random objects. Most of our alteration tailors are experts at this; even using the same fibers from another part of the clothing if possible.

There it was, a truck stuck within the snow. So out I came in my new jeans to help. While pushing the truck, my jeans split. So I repaired them. Then I found out who had produced those jeans for Walmart. People who were under paid. And then if found out that at one poorly constructed production plant the entire building collapsed, killing many. I wore those jeans for many many years and repaired them again and again. I wore those jeans for so many years in respect for those who had died that the pockets had disintegrated.

My thoughts precisely, that patch seems like a scratch-starter. Also when the fabric is worn to that point, it's hardly worth trying to repair because usually the other side will be as bad. It's obviously possible but a lot of work and will last maybe 5 or 10 percent more.

Since you didn't give any details on what you used to fix this I will do it for you. The white "fabric" used to cover the hole in the back is called Wonder Under from Pellon. It is iron on interfacing. Then get a darning presser foot out of your machine presser foot box and use it instead of a regular presser foot. Going up and down is not how you darn. You lower your feed dogs and then stitch wherever you need to. You should have a manual for our machine to help you with the darning process because this video is not how you do it.

It also puzzles me why jeans now wear out so much faster than jeans used to, not even very long ago. Especially expensive jeans.

I've pondered this question also; it used to be that the quality of material was judged by its weight and jeans that didn't last at least twenty years were seen as low quality, now people are brainwashed into believing that if it's expensive it must be quality.
