That was super interesting, especially when you talked about Kun using too much breath because for me I always assumed he also put his voice far back like Xiaojun (btw your pronunciation was really good) but too far back so it got stuck that way, which is a shame because his tone is so nice. If he fixed that, Kun would be so much stronger as a vocalist. I also agree Winwin sounds like he hasn't been given much vocal training at all and I think it might be that SM focused more on him learning Korean (hence why he also has no lines in 127). To me Xiaojun's voice suits classical singing more and Ten's is a lot more modern. Ten tends to speak with quite a thin, nasal tone too so it's interesting how that translates into his singing. Your point about Chinese is right, I speak Chinese and the words are usually more far back in your mouth than English (and Korean) and I've noticed A LOT of Chinese idol singers have Xiaojun's habit of going too far back when singing - I watched a few Chinese survival shows and many male trainees sang really far back with that 'hooty' sound. So that was a really great observation!

I noticed that too about Kun's technique and based on the fact that lead vocalists are usually the 2nd bests after main and Ten was called main vocalist by YangYang during one of their insta lives I make an assumption that Kun can be lead vocalist in WayV once under some video. "Even Winwin who I found lines for" this is so sad but so true.. He's literally been an idol for 4 years and the fact that even now it was hard to find material just shows how much he's been robbed by SM (I'm very sure that they also gave him wayy to little vocal lessons bc I believe that he really has more potential). But regardless, in really happy that you did the WayV ranking!!💚 They'll also be releasing their first full length album in a while and as soon as the current c-situation resolves, I hope that we will be getting some live performances! If that happens, you can just look at them and decide if you think that a reranking is needed or not. But I really like your current ranking and I completely agree with it! I'm also very happy that you put Ten in 2nd and even said that he can be considered 1st. Ten, for me, has such a beautiful and CLEAR voice and I absolutely love it!! One of the reasons why I stan WayV is because of their mix of languages. They are one of the most lingually diverse groups, and I am completely here for it. I know NCT127 has Mark, Jaehyun, Johnny, and Yuta as the foreign swaggers; however, the rest of the members don't speak English and Japanese as confidently. In WayV, each of the members can comfortably switch between Cantonese, Mandarin, English, and Korean in every sentence. In addition, WinWin speaks Wenzhounese, YangYang speaks German, and Ten speaks Thai. I speak 5 languages myself, and I have genuinely never related more to a vocal group's language problems. Thanks, Samuel for this ranking!!

Covid-19 broke earlier in China than In other countries. I believe SM have so many projects for them before covid-19, because they main target is china not Korea or other country. For example Lucas has many scheduled in mycountry for promoting his commercial but cancelled due covid-19. At least during this covid-19 pandemic the boys can performed in many korean shows or online concert unlike other cpop groups.

@paulinerrr7954 жыл бұрын
for me XIAOJUN is so phenomenal, and i cannot wait to see how he grows as a vocalist. he has a lot of experience singing cantopop (cantonese pop) and it's quite obvious to me because cantopop is sung with tones (mandarin pop like wayv is sung without tones) which i think gives him so much vocal dexterity and emotion. cantopop is difficult because the sung tones have to be placed/pitched properly and it's difficult to project that onto melody, so cantonese singers tend to focus on emotion/delivery of lyrics and tempo to create style. so xiaojun's stylistic choices suggests to me that he *hears* more than others bc of his cantonese/cantopop background, which makes sense considering cantonese's 9 tones that need to be maintained when singing and mandarin's lack of tones. xiaojun's voice is really special for someone so young, he reminds me of the great HK/cantopop singers of the late90s/early2000s, and there aren't really any young impressive vocalists in hk/cantopop right now. his voice triggers something deeply nostalgic for me. he sounds so unique and his voice suggests that he has way more experience than his 20yrs. xiaojun's father is also an excellent singer and did extensive touring around china and asia, if i recall correctly, and was an extremely popular impersonator of the cantopop star anita mui. i'm really curious to hear more of his lower register bc i think it has a lot of potential! would also love to hear him do some runs.

You pronounced Xiao Jun right! Also, I’m also not a dictation expert, but Mandarin does have this thing where you curl your tongue and can be used to do things such as the “sh” (and a bunch of other sounds that idk how to translate-ish to English). The thing that makes it different from the usual “sh” sound is that it does bring your voice a bit back down the throat, but with my experience with singing (plz don’t take my word for this since it’s just a hobby), the curl-your-tongue thing doesn’t rlly bring it back enough for it to become a habit/problem with singing. Pitch wise, it does kind of block(?) you from going lower and deeper, but that’s also why a lot of songs sung in Mandarin are pronounced “sloppily” (for lack of better terms). Yangyang comes from Taiwan, which surprisingly matters because Mandarin in Taiwan is spoken a bit differently. Mandarin in Taiwan doesn’t have the curling of the tongue (I mean they do, but not really... it’s complicated) which might be why Yangyang doesn’t really have a placement problem and is the main rapper (curling the tongue while rapping is an additional burden since rapping already involves a lot of syllables). With my experience with Mandarin, the tone of Mandarin is usually either high and nasally or kind of deeper and lower down the throat. If someone’s in the middle, it’s usually an accent from a foreigner or someone from a less-populated area in China (like Lucas and Ten - they speak kind of down the middle). Also, I know that Lucas is from Hong Kong but Hong Kong used to a British territory, so the Mandarin spoken there is usually different from “traditional” Mandarin that you would find in, for example, Beijing. In Mandarin, if you speak down the “middle,” you actually don’t get an authentic sound when you curl the tongue. It’s hard to hear if Mandarin isn’t your first language. Most people don’t care, though, because China is humongous and almost always has foreign businessmen or tourists. Mandarin is a very diction-driven language and curling the tongue is just one example. There are other diction rules and complications in Mandarin that make it VERY hard to master and sound authentic in (so Ten is already a genius by being able to learn it). There’s also the fact that Hendery, Lucas, and Xiao Jun (maybe Winwin and Yangyang too) speak Cantonese. I don’t speak Cantonese so I can’t say anything about it, but there are probably some wacky diction rules in there too. This is obviously not a scientific answer and I even don’t know if this is right, but this is my experience with Mandarin as someone who comes from and has lived in Taiwan, China, and a Hong Kong while also being fluent in English. Wow, sorry this was so long! (P.S. Ten is my bias too and thank you for the wonderful analysis to WayV! Love your videos! ❤️)

Wow, that was fascinating. Thank you SO much for that, it all makes alot of sense. I do want to learn more about language affects on tounge placement. So that was a fun read. Thank you!
@cr0wdedteeth4 жыл бұрын
i speak cantonese and i can attest the diction rules are extremely different from mandarin. one of the biggest differences is there is no "curling" of the tongue (no R sounds that frequent mandarin esp beijing accents) and it has more tones than mandarin (9, compared to the 4). What I've noticed being a native speaker is that a lot of the tones are either in the front of the mouth or back of the mouth, very few sounds have you opening your throat so it tends to sound nasally on most people. I know Lucas Xiaojun and Hendery are native canto speakers, Xiaojun probably has issues with this less because Guangdong while heavily populated with canto speakers is a part of the Chinese mainland so mandarin is much more widespread there, meanwhile mandarin influence in macau and hk (where lucas and hendery are from) is lesser. I noticed in the WayV dream launch web series that Hendery and Lucas sometimes trip up in their mandarin pronunciations too which could partially be attributed to the differences in canto and mando as well.
@ineednotbe4 жыл бұрын
Hi to add on, while all the members speak mandarin, it is likely that they also grew up speaking their dialect which is probably different for every member. Just like how cantonese is different from mandarin, the difference between dialects can be as different as mandarin and korean are. I'm not familiar with the individual dialects but Wenzhounese (what winwin speaks) has a reputation for being the most indistinguishable/different language to mandarin. It's even nicknamed the devil's language for being super hard to learn. Anyway I've probably gone off topic but just a little tidbit

Thank you so much for completing the trilogy! Samuel is us winwin stans trying to cobble together all of the short clips of his singing we have heard to make a collage of his vocal palette: we are trying. The fact that the best clips we have of him singing live come from a variety show never ceases to make me angry (perhaps my villain origin story). Hendery is a wild card, whatever we expected from him as a rookie he turned around, honestly, I have no clue what he might do next. Your point about Chinese is really interesting (as someone who is learning Chinese), because it would make sense why ten, someone who has learned and spoken different languages with different tongue placements and vocal placements, but Xiaojun who didn't start learning languages until later might be more used to a farther back placement. Xiaojun's emotional singing is just him I think, but also because he has bit of a musical theatre background which might affect it. As far as Kun I agree with everything you said, but I never had the words for it before! Im totally rambling but this one was awesome thanks for this ranking! P.S.: sadly there are no live clips of it but YangYang's song with asteroid is by far my favorite time hearing him sing, also that song is just like, really really good for studying to.

When I first listened to WayV's Moonwalk(at that time I didn't know who they are) I was very surprised by XIAOJUN's voice and I said ''Wow, this guy's voice sounds different from other pop music voices ''...so I became a fan (for the 1st time a real fan of a pop group) Agree that talking about a good voice is not only about vocal timbre&range&technique and how strong that voice is but also about emotion. Art is about conveying emotion and ideas. XIAOJUN conveys emotions to us. I remember that after his dance video with Ten was released, Winwin was asked who would be the next person he would like to dance with and he said XIAOJUN because it'd be a very emotional dance

WayV is by far my favorite group to come out of the NCT project, but I do feel like SM didn't really focus on giving voice training to the boys. I feel like it's a thing that happens with SM and their Chinese trainees tbh, because Luhan seemed quite untrained for a main vocalist back in the EXO-M days. But then they have Zhoumi, so idk really. Anyways I'm super excited for Infinite, they are my favorite boy group and they have the guy with my favorite tone (albeit having his technical flaws) in kpop: Mr. Nam Woohyun!

It's just funny how everyone kept on downgrading Ten's vocals saying he can't sing when he keeps on improving himself every day. Deserves the main vocalist position, a true ace.

YES, we all need to fangirl/boi about Ten. I mean he is seriously a genius. He can dance SOOO WELL, sing like a main vocalist, rap like a main rapper. Outside of his profession, he can also speak 4 languages (literally learned Chinese in less than two years), draw & design art, be extremely funny.... I am pretty sure even if he didn’t choose to become an idol he would still be able to do well in whatever job it is. Smartest guy in the INDUSTRY. PERIOD.

Another interesting thing to share is WayV wasn't able to debut because they don't have a strong main vocalist until SM casted Xiaojun. They are so impressed with such an all-rounder ace and even featured him heavily for his vocal and dance in NCT's most successful song "Make a Wish".

I am always saying that Winwin has so much potential, I can see him doing a lot with it if they would actually let him. He does interesting things with his vocal tone. Xiaojun to me is inarguably wayv's best vocalist. He knows how to use his voice, he's not just singing for the sake of singing.

I think one of the problems for Lucas is that the songs of kpop in general tend to be higher in pitch, even for the men, also,bc way v has a lot of voices that do better in the higher range, their songs tend to favour that. If Lucas had a song dedicated to his baratone that would be amazing

Okay vocal coach and giant WayV Stan here and I have some thoughts: Tbh I really like the tone of Lucas voice and since he said multiple times that he loves singing I would want for SM to let him work on his voice more. I think he could actually be a really good vocalist, he has a strong voice and also a strong chest voice, he could make a good belter. And his style you described actually has good tendencies of speech level singing which you could totally use as a foundation to do really impressive things, while still keeping the lightness you also described in his rap, with the right vocal coach. I feel like Baritones are done so dirty in K Pop groups but their voices are so essential for the harmonies. Same goes for Hendery. He would have so much potential if you would give him stuff that fits his voice better. Because you can actually hear, that Hendery's voice doesn't naturally sit and feels most comfortable in the areas they give him to sing in. He sometimes jokes around in the really low register, like REALLY low, and I feel like that is where is voice really shines, it has a really warm, really round tonal quality which you don't find that often. With Yang Yang it really is just experience. You basically already can see signs of everything he will be able to do someday, it just isn't fully developed. But he does slowly get more singing parts and soli and you can already see a lot of improvement. Kun I would dare to say, actually has the most consistent technique out of the vocalists. He is very comfortable in every area, also when he is just joking, and knows his voice really well. His tone of voice and his technique just isn't typically pop or k pop. Like while I absolutely adore Ten and Xiaojun and it is amazing what they can do vocally, when they are just joking you can hear their voices crack much more often than Kuns. And the falsetto is just really a stylistic choice. He could also have some amazing, really strong really connected high notes, which we just in the actual songs sadly don't hear that often. The difference between him and Ten and Xiaojun is actually that they have much more "metal" in their voice, so a metallic quality we are much more used to while hearing pop. Kun doesn't have placement issues at all, on the contrary, but he does different technical things than Ten or Xiaojun. Because of that he is able to create really nice and really healthy sounds and keep his voice in shape really well but it has a different tonal quality than the clear Belt, Mix and Falsetto Ten and Xiaojun have. With Ten and Xiaojun you really have picture book pop technique just stylistically spoken. But what they do in contrast to Kun for example is that they have much higher risk of getting pushy and having throat tension, Kun is much more grounded in his body. Ten has a really concise singing voice with a very high recognition value which is I think his biggest strenght. Xiaojun I think has a lot of potential to get even better as well. With Kun and Xiaojun you can see really well Skill versus talent. Don't get me wrong, Xiaojun also has a good technique but not as consistent as Kun. He does however have a really warm voice tone and just a really good natural understanding of interpretation, which makes him such a strong vocalist. But this all really is just being very nit picky. They are my bias band forever and I love all of them and think that they all are incredibly talented. But I do think they have even more potential then they were allowed to show so far. Hearing your thoughts was really interesting! Thank you for making this video, I enjoyed it a lot! :-) (Also when it comes to singing a lot of stuff is very subjective and every singing teacher and every singer has a different approach etc. so at the end of the day everyone will say something different and everyone has to choose for themselves what he/ she believes is right. I also of course don't Analyse them this way when I am listening to their music, I just enjoy their voices then. There is always room for improvement, also for myself and also for the best singers and I think they all have beautiful voices and harmonize as a group really well which is why they are my favorites at the end of the day

So excited!! I love your analysis, but yeah I'm sure it's hard for WayV, we don't know enough about some of their voices. Thank you for your hard work as always!!!

You are so right about Xiaojun! His emotions is great for singing Chinese and Korean ballads. However, he hits different when he sings English songs. He sounds quite Bruno Marish with his R&B style of singing with his riffs and runs, especially in "Nectar". For WayV vocalists like Kun and Ten, they sound good when singing in a certain range of their upper vocal register but very flat when singing in deeper notes because of their thinner/airy voice but for Xiaojun, he sounds great in both lower and upper vocal registers which really shows his versatility as a singer and his high notes are extremely solid. Most importantly, his MR removed performances is the most stable (along with Taeil) among all NCT members.
