Season 1 of Wayward Pines is one of my favorite single seasons of any show I've seen. Unfortunately due to the writers delivering a boring, unimaginative season 2 that lacks any kind of suspense or mystery, the show fell off a cliff and got cancelled. In this video, I look into what happened that caused such a disaster.

Season 2 of Wayward Pines managed to do what Season 6 or 7 does for most shows. The writers had no idea what to do or where to go or how to keep the show interesting so they just started throwing garbage at the screen full of plot holes and characters nobody cares about

I watched the first episode of s2, and realized that the entire season would be following that doctor or whatever as the main character. I’m not sure how they allowed the guy on the set. His acting was outright embarrassing to watch. And he’s the most boring character in that one episode that I’ve ever seen. I really enjoyed the first season a lot, and fell asleep trying to get through the first episode of s2. Crazy how they thought killing Ethan and following a new random guy as the lead was a good idea whatsoever. Him and his embarrassing acting, paired with the most boring possible storyline they could have gone with after the events of s1, made me not watch any further. I just don’t care. The first season becomes pointless at that point. I went from really liking the show to being unable to even watch the second season. The young adults/kids being the new main players was also horrible to me. There are so many things they could have done differently that would have been insanely better than where they went with it. S1 is great, but I can’t recommend it to anyone because s2 ruins it.

From what I hear, season one was based off the book trilogy and was meant to be solely a mini series. Because it got good ratings they decided to make another season with no source material and no involvement from the author. Season 1 was already seriously hampered when the sister of the main antagonist goes from icecold psychopathic bitch threatening to operate on the main protagonist without sedation to 'he lets assist you in overthrowing my brother'. The premise of the show is brilliant, and so is about 75% of season 1 in terms of its build up and reveals as there's a constant sense of dread and tension. But the ending where the aforementioned sister suddenly turns a 180 and becomes a character we're supposed to sympathize with felt so out of place it killed it for me.

I agree that it does feel a little odd how Nurse Pam does a 180 turn. But conceptually it works and I accept it with no problem. Nurse Pam and Megan Fisher are the opposing pillars of the story. Nurse Pam believed so much in David Pilcher's plan that she had lost sight of her humanity, but it's regaining her sense of humanity that saves her. The Nurse Pam we see by the end is the real Pam. Whereas Megan is simply a narcissist whose lack of humanity leaves her with nothing and ultimately destroys her. The juxtaposition of those two characters, who originally appeared to be on the same side when caught up in all the rhetoric, drives home the whole point of the show that it is humanity that will save mankind.

This is an awesome video dude! Absolutely well done. Not enough people cover this show and it’s all around really forgotten. Wayward pines had the potential to be an all time great show in my opinion, season 1 was fantastic. Unfortunately season 2 fell really short and did not allow for a season 3 to come out. I definitely didn’t think season 2 was terrible, it had some good aspects and episodes that I enjoyed. However it definitely fell short of season 1, and the lack of viewers is what ultimately caused the show to end. It’s really disappointing considering we could have experienced a top tier show

I think about this show every now and again; only caught a few episodes, and had to Wiki to find out about the future, the Abbies, and everything. I got caught up watching those synopsis videos you see on here for everything (the title is something like people aging 100 in a day; they don't seem to get a lot of subtext of shows sometimes), and have been looking for content, which brought me here. I think Season 2 needed a mystery: some good options were "why isn't the food growing", "the Abbies, what's their real deal", and "what do you mean our power source isn't functioning"? The first and third ones work really well, with the Doc finding references to "the problem" and assumes it's the rebels, or that the world isn't ready, and when Jason dies, the truth is discovered, but things are so screwed up there's no way to fix it, except pulling another Pilcher and refreezing as many as they can. Discovering more about the Abbies would require changing somethings about the show, like maybe they're starting to see babies born in WP are starting to show symptoms of being an Abbie, but that really changes a lot and kinda throws science out the window. One idea with people left behind and people frozen for season 3 is they thaw out, mostly because the system is crashing, and they head out into the world, and discover that the remaining humans and the Abbies built a better world together, with legends about what slept in the mountain. Now the WP people are a resource to be harvested by the competing clans of Neo-Abbies: instead of saving humanity, Pilcher's plan has doomed the last of them.

Really interesting assessment (and very witty too). I particularly liked your breakdown of David Pilcher, and your idea about switching around the character paths of Jason and Kerry (a missed opportunity there for sure). Regarding Megan Fisher- It was clearly meant to be read that Megan died in Season One; stripped of her authority, her husband's awkward impersonal goodbye kiss, and no longer belonging to either camp, she dies alone in the dark at the hands of the monsters. It was a fitting ending for her character and gave the audience a deep sense of poetic justice. Bringing her back just undermined that.

@@picklecookies After watching your video I decided to rewatch Season One again (this is about the 5th time seeing it now). There is one thing that has always niggled me in S1. At the very beginning of episode one, straight off the bat we are told that Ethan had an affair with Kate. Kate being a character who we haven't even been introduced to yet, and therefore we have no emotional involvement with her. In the second episode (which I've just finished watching), the scene in the toy store with the ducks, there is this exchange of dialogue regarding Kate's marriage to Harold... Ethan: Well, I never got the wedding invitation. Kate: We kept it intimate. Ethan: Yeah. So did we. THAT'S the moment when it should have been revealed they had a ding-dong together. The audience's reaction would undoubtedly have been "Ooooooh!!!" Other than that, S1 is quite perfect. But yeah, that has always niggled me^^ It's been a few years now since I last saw this and I'm loving it.

I loved the story idea of waking up 2000 years in the future. After season 1 I wanted to watch season 2 as soon as possible. Finished it today and well.... I disliked it so mutch. Their was no real "main character" in my opinion. People like Jason, who I really disliked, where shown so many times that it got really annoying soon. Like you said, everyone from season 1 just DIES. I thought Bens mum would end up becoming the main BUT NO...she dies and except searching for Ben and being kind she was kinda useless at the end like everyone Else in season 2 '_' Nice video, I agree with literally everything.

It seems like they attempted a very badly executed walking dead "no one is safe" tactic and it off course went horribly wrong. That type of writing can work but has to be executed correctly. If they wanted that shock factor killing off Ethan worked and they should have kept been around at least for a while if they really felt they needed an extra shock factor that soon after Amy would have been better to kill off or even Theresa.

I watched Season 1 as it aired, and in the time between the two seasons, I read the books. For the record, I want to say that deviations from the source material are not an inherently bad idea... if handled correctly. There are some differences between the books and the TV series that I think are great additions, such as the idea of "The First Generation," and further development for the police officer character (he's literally killed off at the end of Book 1, fed to the Abbies, with the message of "attempting to overthrow Pilcher"). There was a bigger plot in the books involving the boss and the wife having an affair, which I'm happy wasn't translated into the series in the first season.

The quality drop actually kinda makes sense if we look at the production history behind the show. The show was orignally planned to be a 10 episode miniseries adapting all 3 novels in The Wayward Pines trilogy by Blake Crouch (Pines, Wayward and The Last Town) with M. Night Shamylan serving as a director of the pilot and executive producer for the rest of the run. However the show was such a surprising success for Fox that they ordered a second season without much thought. The second season had to invent an entirerly new narrative building up on something that had a clear and concise beggining, middle and end without the need for a contiuation (same thing happened with Supernatural post season 5). Now whilst season 2 it wasn't as good as the first I thought it far exceded what it could have been.

I'm rewatching this now and have started season 2. I still maintain the worst thing they could have done was killing Ben. The resistance should have been a storyline that got over quickly and had Ben go outside the town with a group to scout a new location to begin spreading once the town got more population. That's my opinion and how I would have done season 2.

Just finished watching the 2 seasons and enjoyed them, but yes, 2nd season was off. I think it has more to do with the bad economics of producing. You can raise money to launch a good season 1 but then everyone wants a giant pay raise for the 2nd season so the best way to compensate is to reboot the next season with new characters/writers/producers. Thanks for the well thought out analysis.

Great video I feel your pain lol I was hoping the doc would go make peace with the leader Abby while everyone went to sleep to fade to black then they wake up 2000 years later and look out the window to see abbys in clothes working and living and there's no more wall so they can see more city development

I'm with you on the crazy decisions to kill off its best characters, but I'm not with you on the Jason Patrick character. I thought he was sublime in his role. He stole every scene he was in. The cliffhanger to the end of season 2 was perfect, and it's a crying shame it isn't coming back.

Just finished the show today and was pissed about season 2 also. It had lot potential and they wasted a good show. So many useless scenes and subpar dialog, and terrible acting. I enjoyed your review.

The acting was insane right? How is it that the first season had good acting to the point I never thought about it, but s2’s acting was so bad it was almost funny in the first episode alone.

You nailed it. This was dismal. I watched it for Matt Dillon, an actor I believe has had too few big parts. WHY??? Why would they squander such an opportunity? Was there some squabble with the producers?

Frankly I think this shows producers donot know what they are doing. Seasons 1 was good and they should have just ended the show there, instead of making Season 2 onwards, the shows producers maybe could have made a film , maybe with sequels which I think may have been better. In Season 1 there is an element of mystery which I feel made many people watch the show, after Season 1 there is no mystery which definitely is a demerit for the show. For any show, story there has to be mystery. Except for Season 1 this is a bad show.

season 2 probably was so bad (just like game of thrones last season) because they already knew they will not be able to do S3 (at least anytime soon), so they rushed and tried to end it at soft reboot spot - Matt Dillon was amazing, so bad they killed him.

i have to disagree.season 1 was awesome i did watch season 2 about 2 years back and where they had got rid of most of the main characters in season 1 i didnt really enjoy it.but i have just watched season 2 again if you can get by the fact that the original cast was killed off in either end of season 1 or the beginning of season 2 it does have a good story to it.i just watched it with an open mind.just wondering how a season 3 would of developed considering the final scene in season 2 was an abby holding a new born baby they may of woke up to a world with normal people in it

You can always count on M.Night to take a perfectly good story and completely screw it up, but to be perfectly honest I didn't expect any different because that's pretty much standard operating procedure for him, I gave it a chance and the first season was great but then it just took a nose dive straight into a sewer, he really need to hear the quote "insanity is doing the same thing over and over again expecting different results", so no M. Night Shamylamadingdong you sir are in fact not a genius, I honestly can not think of another person who has been more of a disappointment when it comes to movies

@@Joecbg100 The story is different but there are strong parallels. The sign into the town reads "Welcome to Potters Bluff - A new way of life" (it even looks similar), it features a very dark version of Nurse Pam with needle scene, and the new investigative sheriff is basically like Matt Dillon's character. The way the townsfolk attack people is more hands on brutal, like in the original Wayward Pines book (which didn't feature a guillotine). There's a few more bits and pieces and basic ideas that remind me very much of Wayward Pines, like the silhouettes of townsfolk on the hunt. I get the distinct feeling the WP book and TV show borrowed from it. You may find it interesting to see. I think it's an OK movie but I prefer the Wayward Pines show.

Their was nothing wrong with using Jason Patric as the new main character he is a good actor and he played Michael in The Lost Boys. The problem here is the First Generation dictatorship which was stupid. I mean Pilcher made it clear they had no army no police force and that the First Generation was very important to lead the town but had no training. I did hear Pilcher even mention anyone who could do the job of trainer. I mean they act like they were trained to be military from birth which was not true. The show should have concentrated more on what is beyond Wayward Pines and not just the Abbys but what else. What does the rest of the world look like. I did like how they showed the way Wayward Pines was built but wish they would have just covered that more in Season 1. This whole 'We are running out of supplies" plot was also stupid. I mean Pilcher was to plan for everything so this idea he used generic everyday people and not the brightest is stupid. Not enough doctors chosen not enough meds to go around or anyone to produce them. The whole "soil has changed plot" was stupid and never fully explained on why the soil changed just that it did for some messed up reason. They just saw the ratings drop and they could not explain it and started throwing everything at the story that no one cared.
