As the U.S. government gears up to hand out nearly $42.5 billion in subsidies for building new broadband networks, service providers of all sizes and stripes are now lining up for a share of the public funds to close the Digital Divide. Under the new Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment (BEAD) program, providers must put up 25% of the project costs, with the feds covering the rest of the tab. Providers must also commit to using mostly U.S.-made equipment in their new networks to meet the government’s Build America, Buy America (BABA) mandate.
