Nice day of fishing. You guys caught it on a perfet day, light rain, slightly off color water. They had just stocked the first of the week. The only wild fish caught were the small rainbows with parr marks. The larger rainbows, the brook trout, and the browns were all definitely stockers. It is nice that those delayed harvest fish will start eating flies within a couple of days of being in the stream. NC does a good just with it delayed harvest program.

They do a nice job with delayed harvest! It would be nice if PA did a better job. Tightlines

Well that was a hell of a day!!!! I’m thinking of going this spring do you have any suggestions? What time of year did you go? How many days did you go? Where did you stay? Did you fish any wild streams?? Appreciate it!!! Coming from PA myself..

Thanks for watching! This was some years ago now. Its been awhile, but we stayed in a little cottage type deal maybe close to Whittier, NC. This was in August....and we were there for probably less than a week. The Oconaluftee River that we fished has wilds in it. Also the Straight Fork Raven Fork that we fished has wilds in it. Most blue lines in those high mountains probably have trout. I really like Western NC. TightLines!

So just to be clear. Were you guys fishing the DH above the powerhouse (just doesn't look like it to me), the stretch above the DH or above White Oak Creek that is also stocked, or the really upper stretch sbove the lake and above Rainbow Springs which is south of Hwy. 64?

Started around White Oak Creek. Thx for watching. Tightlines

It looks like most of the rainbows were wild, and I believe that the biggest brown that you caught was wild, but the other browns appeared to be stocked fish. I recently moved to the Carolinas from PA, and I was disappointed to find out that the agencies here have no qualms about stocking hatchery trout on top of wild fish. In PA the PFBC makes a concerted effort to not do that, although it does happen on some streams. Regardless, that was a great day of nymphing. P.S. I "liked" your video despite the fact that the smaller wild rainbows were unceremoniously tossed back into the river. : )

Thanks for watching. The Nanty is a nice river, but yes it could be managed as a all wild stream. My son went to college in SC not far from western NC. That got me down there more. Will see how much I make it down there now. I do like it there. Enjoy living in the south! Tightlines

That fishery could support totally wild fish with a few regulation changes. The delayed harvest crowd loves to catch those big pale dough bellies.

I believe it’s wrong to put stocker fish over self sustaining wild trout populations. It’s done by governments for the dollars. More stockers = more revenue from license fees & trout stamps. Save stocking for rivers where wild trout can’t be self sustained, thus you create a fishery where one did not previously exist. Use license fees to improve stream habitat projects, and let the wild fish stay wild.

If you want to catch wild fish go to a stream that's not stocked and designated Wild

So when people say “Upper” Nantahala does that mean above the power station on Wayah or above the Lake. Very familiar with area from hiking, biking, rafting but never fished much other than below power station
@WildBlueDiscovery3 жыл бұрын
I would say above where the extra water supply is pumped in. Above where the rafting starts. The upper part has a delayed harvest portion then the area farther up stream where I guess its wild only accept for what stockers make their way up there.
