I was on the stadion at Lahti that day. The pain was unbeliveable when niskanen fell

While the Finland-Norway tangle was the massive moment of this race, I think that sprint from Diggins ahead of Nilsson was a real amazing moment too.

This is gonna haunt Iversen for a long time, and for good reason. His move probably cost Finland their best chance at a gold medal, and his own chance at his very first medal ever. I feel for Finland, and for Iversen. He let his teammate down, he let his country down, and he pissed off the host nation. Some people are claiming he stepped on Niskanen's skis on purpose, which is a plain ridiculous assumption. Why would he sabotage the guy's race, and risk crashing? He was trying to get ahead of Niskanen so that Niskanen would have to change lanes and have a longer way to the finish line, which happens in sprints all the time. Stressed, physically tired, and lacking the experience of a Krogh or Northug, he changed too late, and it was a fateful decision. Stina Nilsson did the same thing when she tried to pass Matveyeva during the women's sprint, and it cost both of them a medal opportunity.

YngtchieMusic Couldn't agree more. It is going to haunt Iversen until he wins a World Championship or an Olympic individual event. If he doesn't, he will be marked as the "guy who stole a medal for Finland". As for Finland, I think, as Kriukov said in the interview in the end (not with those kind words), it was poetic justice after Sochi, since I felt Niskanen should be disqualified after that road block in 2014.

@@ahtramos It wasn't Niskanen though in Sochi, it was his teammate with whose skis the German got tangled up with. So to come at Niskanen like that is petty. You can think the team should have been disqualified (unlike the jury of professionals) but Niskanen had nothing to do with it, so the poetic justice part is a bit off since there needn't be any bad blood towards him, and he was the one who suffered in this case. With the OP I agree fully. Emil is not a bad or stupid person for what happened here. Shit happens as sprints, relays and mass starts are very delicate races. Happened in Sochi, happened in Lahti, happened many other times. At least us spectators get to just move on.

"And for the second day in succession, Norway lose out on a certain gold." I call BS on that. It wasn't a given that Iversen would out kick Niskanen in the final sprint to the line. Niskanen was gaining ground on Iversen very quickly in the last few hundred meters and he had the speed and good glide on his skis. Iversen was fatiguing pretty quickly. The chances were 50/50 at best. And in the skiathlon, Sundby's chances were even smaller given that Ustiugov has a much better finish than Sundby and Sundby wasn't even close to dropping him during the race. The best Sundby could have done without his fall was a slim lead over the top of the final hill, but Ustiugov would have been right there.

Iversen changed line on top of Niskanen's skies. Iversen's fault. Stina Nilsson did the same as Iversen in women's individual sprint and got a punishment (ranked as last of that heat)

Thanks for posting, Vinnie! WARNING: recap (aka spoiler) of the Men's skiathlon at the beginning. I wanted to watch the sprints before the skiathlon, but unfortunately now I know the results. Skip to 5:30 if you haven't seen that race yet.

Oh man. Iversen is devastated right now. He just didn't realize Niskanen had a higher speed than him. I feel sorry for the Fins that most likely lost their gold medal and Klæbo for not getting a medal for his great effort.

I think this is the right way to look at it -- Iversen wanted the inside corner (as he should) and didn't know Niskenan would step there just at that moment with the faster speed he had.. If you look at it slow-mo, iversen looks forward before Niskanen steps out of the track. Niskanen was taking a high risk strategy going for the inside (where there was not track), As an interesting aside, recall at the 2014 Olympic team sprint, Finland cut towards a track out of the corner and took out Germany.

Fucking biased commentary. Iversen saw Niskanen had much higher speed, and wanted to block him, so he wouldn't have that speed anymore. Shamefull

Rafael Hernandez funny one said the same as you but it's bias. the 2 commentators blamed different people
