This is one small town. This sheriff is probably doing his best to get bad cops out of his precinct but there are over one million cops employed in the United States as of 2018. Given that one of these cops was allowed to retire (presumably on full pension and benefits) and the other will likely turn up in some other backwater town, I would hardly characterize this as 'being held accountable'. Charges for dereliction of duty and some meaningful punishment would have been more appropriate. This simply reinforces the message to all cops everywhere that there will always to be two sets of rules.

In some states, yes. Unless convicted of a felony, in FL you retain your pension, benefits. They can be portable too depending on which programs you sign up for. Many cops & civil service get 1 pension then work for another city, state job & get 2 checks 💰💰💰. They can work past 65 too with waviers if I recall.
