This was the first ever NWA ppv my folks ordered for me, so it has a special place in my memories. I always taped the ppvs so I could watch them over and over again and the tape started to wear on the US and World title matches because I watched them so many times. I, for some reason, vividly remember the build-up to the bullrope match too and I have no idea why. This ppv was also my first time really seeing Terry funk and 8-year old me HATED him after this. I was also hooked on Muta at this point too. Thanks for doing this one, Brian. Please never stop with the Terry Funk voice.
@Rocketboy13137 ай бұрын
What is kind of great about he Terry Funk impression is how you nail the "I am so wound up my voice is getting high and tight" nature of it. That is how he sounds because he is conveying that he is so driven to fight, and yet you are putting in this nonchalante inflection. The contrast is comedy gold. Sort of the inverse of someone using a really over the top voice to convey down to earth communication, like that Dr. Robotnik Latte scene in the first Sonic the Hedgehog movie.
@oldandbitter7 ай бұрын
Lex Luger had a fantastic 1989. After the Hayes feud, he had a killer match with Steamboat, a decent mini feud with a past his prime Tommy Rich, and then a great couple of matches with a young Brian Pillman.
@OptimumTaurus7 ай бұрын
Luger was never the greatest in the ring, but when Luger CARED, he could go fairly well. With proper motivation and the right opponents, Lex Luger could be in some great matches. He had great presence in the ring and was a great spectacle. Think about the night he won the WCW title from Hulk Hogan. He had the whole wrestling world in his palm for a night. Everyone was THERE for Luger winning the belt. People cared. It's bad Luger was such a choke artist-- because with the proper booking he could have been a basically much better Ultimate Warrior or Goldberg type (he was, for what its worth, a much safer worker than either of them).

Terry Funk was the cherry on top of the epic finale to Flair/Steamboat. It's also worth noting that the subtext with Flair and Funk was your first real Part Time v. Full Time. This was the show that made me a wrestling fan. I grew up in the Memphis territory and they had a show on Saturday mornings after cartoons, so I had watched wrestling for longer than I can remember. But this is the show that convinced me that this was something I should keep up with. Our local cable company would occasionally give away repeat showing of PPVs for free as an enticement to order the next show live and this was one of them. My mom pointed it out on the TV listing in the newspaper (wow, that's a very old statement) and I made sure to be in my room ready to watch when it came on. I was 9 years old and didn't understand the idea of different wrestling promotions so I wad expecting USWA. And, well, Lance Russell and Doug Gilbert were people I recognized... but then Muta came out. My nine-year-old brain was not ready for what I saw then. Then there was Sting, then Flair/Steamboat... after that I was hooked.
