Great video! Learned a few things. I have 10 year old WD red drives still in production and working perfectly. Slowly phasing them out but, 10 years of solid use and very happy.

I know you did mention this problem in an older video but Western Digital did a dirty and I still have a few of the drives on a redundant NAS. The CMR v.s. SMR scandal. I swore by WD till this came out and I did not know why my array was so slow to rebuild on test or failure. One SMR drive in an array would slow the rebuild to about a week instead of a day. This gives a much larger chance of another failure that could trash the array. I now no longer depend only on WD .

I'm wondering what, if anything, WD (and Seagate) is doing about Synology scaling back support for 3rd party drives in their products. It's got to impact bottom lines in some way.

I suspect that either WD or Seagate is making those Synology drives. And those Synology NAS out there are probably a tiny fraction of devices using HDD's compared with huge server farms and home computers, external HDD's, SSD's, etc.

@@DavidM2002 I believe that Toshiba is making Synology's HAT drives, but the particulars on who manufactures what specific parts and if there's any collaboration between Toshiba and the other two, I'm not sure about. However it seems to me that the Ironwolf and Red lineups will have to at least take some hit with these drive restrictions, however soft.

Lost 3 wd red drives in the last 5 years ( 2 x 3TB and a 4TB ), all under warranty, but cost £50.00 to get 4TB replacement before I shipped back the faulty one, so I could repair my nas before sending drive back. Won't be buying any more WD red. Not lost any other manufacturers drives in that time.

I''ve had 4 NAS's so far, and currently have 3 Synology's (home use). Drives fail - that is a law of the universe. Yours failed within warranty which is better than outside of it :) The thing is to have a good setup, SHR2/Raid6 and a spare drive on the shelf. A drive failed in my 12 bay a week ago, and having a spare on the shelf was very satisfying. It has been on the shelf for 6 years and i finally got to use it now. So this is something I have continued with when i bought my 16TB drives for my newest NAS, one of them is on the shelf ready to be used when one of the drives fail. I understand the reaction that if brand X fails I will never buy it again, but it is not rational in all situations to think like that for the sample size of 1. I myself avoid some brand, or more specifically certain products form some brands, but I try to get my information from more than my own experiences, like Blackblaze for HDD failure. And then brands RMA reputation also plays a big role in my buying decisions.
