Making a sword from an old spring. Many sword are forged from a chain or from a bearing, but since I don't have a forge, my choice fell on a spring. This production of swords differs from the traditional as well as the design itself.
First, heating the spring in the fire, I making it flat and at the same time relieved the stress from the steel. This will later help me shape the contours of the sword more easily.
First, on a sheet of paper, I drew the outlines of a sword and transferred it to a metal blank using spray paint.
I cut out the shape of the sword with an angle grinder.
After which I started rough sanding on a belt sander and turned the strip into a long piece of steel in the shape of a sword.
I made the guard using a thick piece of brass. I cut it to size with a tape machine and machined a guard with a drilling machine.
I hardened the sword in oil. I made the release of the metal after hardening in oil heated over a fire, but unfortunately this part of the video was lost by me.
For the manufacture of the sword handle, I used wood, which I first glued together, and then formed the handle itself on a grinding machine.

Basically, it is a leaf spring used in trains and automobiles, so it is the highest quality carbon steel. It is a high-strength carbon steel that is incomparable to old steel. These days, people were very fond of old-style Japanese swords a few years ago, but these days it's different. This is because people realized that the steel made by the modern iron manufacturing method has superior elasticity and rigidity than the old iron material. The old-fashioned folding method was used because the basic quality of traditional Japanese iron was very poor. However, in the case of the highest quality carbon steel in which impurities have been removed down to the decimal point by modern steel manufacturing methods, such a welding method may not be necessary.

And an old spring has been used and abused for years and may develop micro cracks that can cause the sword to break.

Iron sand in Japan is iron sand that magma has weathered. This iron sand has low phosphorus and sulfur content and contains vanadium. Phosphorus and sulfur make steel brittle, and vanadium strengthens it. In tatara ironmaking, the iron sand is semi-molten by keeping the furnace at 1300℃, but only phosphorus, sulfur and impurities and slag are melted and discharged. So impurities and slag are removed from the material tamahagane of katana. It is produced using the same tamahagane material as katana, a high-end kitchen knife made in Japan. kzbin.infoTldpPYewaQo Vanadium makes the steel malleable and easy to roll, making it easy to fold. By folding, the vanadium is finely dispersed and combined with carbon to form a fine metal structure, so the katana has excellent hardness, abrasion resistance, corrosion resistance, and toughness, and becomes beautiful when sharpened. Hitting the steel with a hammer removes the carbon with a spark, so the carbon content drops to 0.7%, which is suitable for katana. By folding, the steel of katana is in a state where austenite and martensite, which have different hardnesses, are dispersed. When a katana is sharpened with a Japanese sharpening stone, the austenite is removed and martensite remains, so the blade becomes like a microscopic saw. That's why Japanese knives sharpen when cutting. Japan's Hitachi Metals developed Yasugi Specialty Steel (yasugi hagane) around 1970 by analyzing and applying tatara ironmaking and tamahagane. Yasugi Steel has the same properties as katana, so it is hard, impact-resistant, and hard to break. This special steel is used for various purposes such as cutlery steel, high-end kitchen knife material, razor material(Gillette,Schick,Wilkinson razor steel), automobile parts material, automobile engine parts, and aircraft engine parts. Japanese knives and zwilling Japanese knives are made from steels such as Blue Paper Steel (Aogami) and White Steel (Shirogami) based on Yasugi Steel.

Interesting sword. I'm not hating on this, but I wouldn't exactly call this a katana. Yes, it has the general shape of one and, yes it has a makugi pin, but it's much too thick. Katanas also have a slight distal taper allowing them to be more effective cutting and slashing weapons. This sword closer resembles a falchion or a broad saber. Again, not trying to hate. Love the build, beautiful blade. Well done.

This reminds me of some of the people on forged in fire show when they go home to make a sword they just get a piece of metal that’s roughly the same shape and they heat it up and straighten it by hitting it with a hammer a couple times then they just cut it to the shape they want or they grind it then they harden it and put a handle on it imo that ain’t the right way of knife making you should make it from a billet and hammer it to shape you want hell just about anyone can do it this way ☝🏻

For Japanese government no. For us yes, it's a single edge sword with 60cm or plus of blade length. It's technically a katana and tamahagane is not good and expensive and really hard for get a good sword. Relax it's technically a katana

Bro. Tamahagane IS pure shit. Spring Steel is really good for making katanas. However for japanese government that's not a katana because not made from tamahagane and not by a Japanese sword smith. But it's a single edge sword with a 60cm or plus blade length. It's technically a katana. And no sword on hearth can slice a steel helmet made for war.
