Wunderkinder gibt es immer wieder. Und Joey Alexander, geboren 2003 in Indonesien, gehört zweifellos zu den Menschen, die schon sehr jung mit großem Talent ausgestattet sind. Im Alter von sechs Jahren begann Alexander mit dem Klavierspielen, indem er nach Gehör Jazzstandards aus der Tonträgersammlung seines Vaters interpretierte. 2011 entdeckte Wynton Marsalis den jungen Pianisten für die Jazzwelt. Der weltbekannte Trompeter hatte Joy Alexander in einem KZbin-Video gesehen und war (und ist!) ebenso begeistert von Joey Alexander wie Herbie Hancock. Bereits dreimal für die Grammy Awards nominiert, trat Joey Alexander bei zahlreichen renommierten Jazzfestivals auf und veröffentlichte bisher fünf Alben. Im Jahr 2021 volljährig geworden, ist die Kritik weiterhin hin und weg von dem jungen Pianisten, der mittlerweile in New York lebt: „Einer der beeindruckendsten Aspekte an Alexanders Spiel ist, dass er nie zulässt, dass seine virtuosen Fähigkeiten die Präsentation der Musik überschatten”, lobte der „All Music Guide“.

I just saw Joey Alexander for the first time playing with this trio a few weeks ago in January 2023 at The Jazz Forum in Tarrytown, NY . All I can say is that Joey is incredible. Kris Funn and John Davis are incredible as well. I sat just a few feet away from Joey, and it was just incredible to see such a young kid (man now at 19) compose and play such beautiful music. It's as if he'd been playing for 30 years. A musical prodigy to say the least. Looking forward to seeing them real soon. Kris Funn just blows me away too. He's awesome. Cheers to 2023 🥳

We saw him at the gala honoring Quincy Jones, the Thursday before the Monterey Jazz festival in Monterey. He was 13 (I think). His parents were there. His mom was so nervous, she waited in the hall outside of the ballroom. They were as humble as he is, so, you knew he had a great family upbringing. Cool family.

Wow.... as an Indonesian, to be honest, I'm proud. Grammy's, NPR, and now... Rockpalast! I never thought someone from here could make it one day! I've only watched Rockstars and Jazz Cats from overseas doing it all these years, and well, now someone from my place made it. But I don't like him only because he came from where I'm from. But his music is... I don't know how to describe it! It's just so good! I love you! And I wish our people appreciate you more than they do... i like the way he entertain people, building a song ,with adagio intro ,with different ideas, and changing to up tempo ,and in the middle of the chorus with solos showing his skills as improvizer . i think Joey has a lot way to go and find his way to compose his best song with his own style

Great stuff!! please check out the late English jazz piano player "Stan Tracey" he was an amazing innovator who I was lucky enough to see live 2 times. He had a great trio with his son playing drums. loads of his music on here. (Check out Stan Tracey & Bobby Wellins playing Thelonius monk tunes).
