The title of the issue is taken from a 2009 book by evolutionary biologist and atheist writer Richard Dawkins, about the evidence for biological evolution. Dawkins also contributes to the album. Holopainen explained to HMV in March 2015: "I wrote him a letter a little over a year ago and explained what ideas we had for this album, mainly about evolution. Since one of the songs goes straight to one of his books, it felt like a perfect match to try and recite him on the album. A few weeks later, he sent me an email accepting the invitation." "Later in 2014, we recorded his parts at Hats Off Studios, Oxford. This is a huge honour for us, as Dawkins is one of our greatest heroes and his writings have been a huge inspiration for the album."

Tuomas Holopainen, the keyboard player, is the leader and founder of Nightwish. We can thank him for everything because he has composed and writen almost all the Nightwish songs (a few are Marko's, alone or with Tuomas). Tuomas is a genius, a metal Mozart, but doesn't usually make a big deal of himself.

Troy Donockley is the true multiinstrumentalist in the band as he plays Uillean Pipes (Irish bagpipes), Tin Whistle (Flute), Low Whistle (Flute), Guitars, Bouzouki (Kind of a mandolin), Bodhrán (Irish drum) and of course vocals. The rest of the band in this lineup: - Tuomas Holopainen - Keyboard and composer - Floor Jansen - Vocals - Marko Hietala - Bass and vocals - Emppu Vuorinen - Guitars - Kai Hahto - Drums Markos is now replaced by Jukka Koskinen on bass. I guess You already realized that this composition (Epos) is about the formation of our Earth and the creation of life as we know it. Tuomas is a true Master Composer.

Prof. Richard Dawkins, who performed the spoken-word parts of the piece, is an evolutionary biologist and (as of the time of that recording) a lecturer at Oxford University. His book, "The Greatest Show On Earth", was Tuomas' inspiration for the album, "Endless Forms Most Beautiful", which was the first Nightwish album to feature both Floor Jansen on vocals and Kai Hahto on drums. The spoken-word sections are all from Prof. Dawkins' works, except the final passage, which is a quotation from Charles Darwin's "On the Origin of Species". If you decide to watch the Wembley performance of this piece, (spoiler alert...) Prof. Dawkins appears at the very end of the video to recite the final passage to a few tens of thousands of fans...and renders them utterly silent as he speaks. He later said he had been more nervous appearing on stage with Nightwish than he ever had been at any time in his teaching career.

The one instrument that looked like bagpipes being played by Troy is called the Uilleann Pipes otherwise known as Irish bagpipes. They are similar to normal bagpipes but instead of having to blow into the bag using your mouth to fill it this one has a bellows attached to fill the bag by moving your arm allowing the user to sing etc.

The man who did the talking bits was Richard Dawkins (on the Wembley Live version he actually comes on stage to say the bit that is said over the credits on this version). He is a British evolutionary biologist and author. If I remember correctly Toumas wrote this song after reading one of Dawkins' books. After he wrote it Toumas asked Dawkins if he would do the talking parts and actually does more spoken parts on the actual album that this song is from.

Something not widely known: if a band fires off confetti, they have to pay a company to clean it up. The decision whether or not to use it depends largely on cost. The ROI often comes down to how much merchandise they sell that has to cover the various costs. Also, the credits scroll lists roadies and the people involved with helping the show. Very few bands do this. In fact, during lock down the crews of bands can't travel with the band and don't get paid. NW allowed their crew to make an album of NW songs sung their way and merch to sell to make their own money. I bought the album (though it definitely wasn't NW) and a T-shirt to support them.

The title of the song doesn’t really have anything to do with the performance. The song is based on the book The Greatest Show On Earth: The Evidence For Evolution by evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins, who provided the spoken word bits. Both the book and the song detail the formation of the Earth, the evolution of life including the rise and eventual fall of mankind.

Hi Kathy (Lulu and Donna as well of course)! The pipe/flute player is Troy Donockley, an English musician who joined the band in 2013 at the same time as Floor. Troy had recorded many sessions with the band since 2007 and appears on the two albums in 2007 and 2011. He only joined the band full-time during the World tour in twenty thirteen. The 'bagpipes' are called Uillean pipes (Gaelic for elbow). Take care ladies, Kevin from England.
@donepearce
@donepearce 5 ай бұрын
Troy - the guy playing the various pipes - is the reason why we have this piece. When he joined the band he brought with him a fascination with evolution and the works of Charles Darwin and Richard Dawkins. He enthused Tuomas sufficiently that between them they created this whole themed album, although Tuomas did the actual writing. Their best performance was at Wembley Arena in London, where they got professor Dawkins himself on stage to speak his own words at the end. I was there (quote from the song).

In videos/concerts filmed during or prior to 2013 you see Jukka (pronounced Youka) playing drums. From 2015-present you see Kai playing drums. In 2014 while recording a new album and getting ready for the following world tour Jukka had to step down due to health reasons. He selected his own replacement Kai. Jukka is still involved with the band but in a strictly behind the scenes role.
@phm19880

Ok. I didnt know that Jukka choose his own replacement. Early years of 2000's nightwish start to be so famous that they have to buy land and they build kinda warehouse there and they hire 4 fulltime workers there, to just working with logistics of band merch and stuff. I have not fact checked this, but allready that time Jukka was the guy who take care of the business like that and somebody told me that in those years, one of the biggest business magazine in Finland( Kauppalehti i think..) choose Jukka "a young entrepreneur of the year".. So thats why its easy to see that he still like to oversee and take care of certain things..

Hello lovely ladies, greetings from UK That was another great reaction, thank you 😉 Tuomas (keyboardist) is also the composer of 95% of the wonderful Nightwish songs, including this one. You chose well Donna 😂 Lulu, the drummer's name is Kai Hahto. He and their previous drummer (Jukka) are two of the best in the world according to some people Kathy, you didn't say who your favourite was so I will assume that it was me! 🤣 The title of the song "The Greatest Show On Earth" is taken from a book of the same name which was written by an Oxford professor called Richard Dawkins. It is his spoken word at the beginning and end of the song ("the guy with the nice voice" as Lulu put it 😁). In his book he thinks that the greatest show on earth is evolution which can be seen each day This song is a history of the formation of The Earth (the fireworks at the beginning represent asteroid impacts to form The Earth), the evolution of humans and also the evolution of music all in one song. Knowing this, if you watched it again you might pick up on a few of these references from within the song

Enjoyed your reaction. One of Nightwish's greatest songs and considered by many to be Tuomas's Magnus Opus, although in my opinion Poet and the Pendulum is their best song because it is very personal for Tuomas and has a huge emotional impact on most fans. Greatest Show on Earth is not about this song but is in fact a reference to evolution. This song is from the album Endless Forms Most Beautiful, much of which is inspired by the writings of Professor Richard Dawkins, a famous evolutionary biologist. Song takes it's name from his book, The Greatest Show On Earth: The Evidence For Evolution. It is the story of Earth and life on our planet. Divided into 5 parts. 4.6 - This is a reference to how old the Earth is (4.6 billion years old) and is about Earth's early existence. Minimalist piano represents Earth drifting in orbit around the sun and slowly changing to create the environment for life to exist. "The Goldilocks Zone from the lyrics. Fireworks represent the early bombardment of Earth by meteorites which is how the building blocks of life were brought to Earth (not the Big Bang). Life - The hammer drops musically and the earliest forms of life come into existence. The LUCA in the lyrics is the Last Common Universal Ancestor from which all life on Earth is descended. The Toolmaker - The emergence of humans , their evolution, and possible extinction. Thus the siren call and the grunts of the first humans. Reference to "little Lucy of the Afar" in the lyrics is referring to one of the oldest skeletal remains (3.2 million years old) found in the Afar region of Ethopia. This section also has a small section on the evolution of music including snippets of the song Dies Irae, Minuet in G major by Christian Petzold, Toccata and Fugue in D minor, BWV 565 by Johann Sebastian Bach and Enter Sandman by Metallica, accompanied with a Tibetan chant. "Enter Ratkind" in the lyrics references a theory by Professor Dawkins that rats are good candidates to evolve into intelligent creatures if humans were to go extinct. We were here is our declaration that humanity as a whole and individual humans matter and had an impact. The Understanding and Sea Worn Driftwood - Two sections that form the outro of the song and concert. Starts with the second spoken word section with Professor Dawkins reading another quote from his book Unweaving the Rainbow. His quote is an incredibly uplifting and inspiring exposition of how rare and precious each life. The orchestral music Tuomas has written here is stunning and one of my favorite parts of the song. It is like the soundtrack to the triumphant hero scene in a fantasy movie which fits perfectly with the idea of each of us being hero's just for existing. Love the perfectly timed bow by the band to the climax of the music and then the music slowly fades to strings and the crash of waves against the shore. I think this is where Sea Worn Driftwood starts. And then the final spoken word by Professor Dawkins reading a quote from Darwin's Origin of Species. I have only just touched on some of the lyrics and the musical composition that tells the story. Lots more to uncover if you dive deep into the lyrics. In this song Troy is playing an Irish Low whistle, similar to a tine whistle but tuned to a lower key and the Uilleann pipes, the national bagpipes of Ireland. Uses a bellows to fill the bag instead of breathing into it like the Scottish Highlan bagpipes most people are familiar with. Has a unique, very celtic feel to it's sound and not quite as piercing as Scottich bagpipes.

The guy with the nice voice is Richard Dawkins, a British evolutionary biologist, former Oxford professor, and author of the book The Greatest Show on Earth. The very last part is a reading from Darwin's On The Origin of Species. I want to say it's how the book ends, but it's been so long since I have read it that I could be wrong in the placement. There's also a little bit of musical evolution in the song that goes from a classical piece to Enter Sandman from Metallica. Most people miss that first hearing. They are amazing live. I have been fortunate to see them once with Tarja, twice with Annette, and twice with Floor. It's ashame that they don't plan on touring for 2-3 years. They are working on a new album. I am hoping it's better than the last one.

Troy is very good at playing the Irish Pipes. He uses his elbows to push air into it. And he is a virtuoso at it. The keyboardist is also the composer of most of the songs.

Evolution. the creation of the universe, earth, life. even the evolution of music..and destruction of mankind( mushroom clouds). Tuomas(keyboard), Kai( drums). Marko ( Bassgitar, singing), Emmpu(guitar), Troy( Flute,thinwistle,bazouki, Uillian pipes, Guitar, singing) Marko now left NW. now there is Jukka in his place..and Floor ( all kind of vocals)..

Greetings from Bavaria/Germany. Unfortunately Marco leaving also meant Floors co-singer leaving. Now in a few songs Troy does Marcos part with singing while playing a concert. But at "The greatest show on earth" it´s now only Floor singing - which isn´t bad. But I miss Marcos vocal contrast to Floors voice.

People are impressed at the fireworks, and indeed they add a certain pop. However, this is far from the first time explosives are used in a song - consider the "1812 Overture" which used cannon fire. Wembley attempts to simulate this (because the concert was indoors and obviously couldn't fire off fireworks), but somehow it loses something (or seems to in video - I was at Tampere and it was spectacular, but to be fair I wasn't at Wembley that year).

The Poet and the Pendulum and The Greatest Show on Earth are considered the masterpieces of Nightwish. Can't call them songs. They are more than that. But don't think that because you've seen the masterpieces, they won't blow you away anymore in their songs! They've got many gorgeous and fun surprises for you to discover! And I agree with Donna. Tuomas is a cutie. And a musical genius! A talent like that makes someone even more attractive if you ask me.

Nightwish in this clip was: Floor Jansen (lead vocals), Tuomas Holopainen (keyboards), Emppu Vuorinen (guitar), Marko Hietala (bass + vocals), Kai Hahto (drums) and Troy Donockley ( flute/ Pipes / mandolin)... Marko Hietala left Nightwish recently and was replaced by Jukka Koskinen (bass) This 2015 Nightwish album 'Endless forms most beautiful' was inspired by the writings of Charles Darwin and the evolution of mankind on Earth... this track was narrated by biologist and author Richard Dawkins. Tuomas recently said that the theme of the evolution of mankind was what inspired the first of what will be 3 albums... the first (w/ the 'I' on the cover) was 'Endless forms most beautiful'... The second was 'Human Nature' (w/ the 'II' on the cover).... and the upcoming Nightwish album will be 'III''.

@Kathy, Lulu, and Donna: Three Generation Reactions: Second comment for you ladies, since you asked! The keyboardist is Tuomas Holopainen -- who is the composer for Nightwish, and who I call "The Metal Mozart." The drummer is Kai Hahto. He replaced Jukka Nevalainen (pronounced "yoo•ka nevah•lie•nen") in 2015, when Jukka stepped down from performing because of insomnia. The other person you asked about was Troy Donockley, a British multi-instrumentalist. Not only does he play tin whistle, low flute, an E-bow guitar, and mandolin, but the instrument he is most known for is the Uaellian bagpipes (pronounced "ill•ee•ian"), which "uaellian" is Gaelic for "elbow." Which is why the Uaellian bagpipes are Ireland's national instrument. The only question I have now is: Reaction to the Nightwish documentary "Please Learn the Setlist in 48 Hours," when? Because I think you would love learning what it was like in 2012, when Floor joined Nightwish. Lol

Hello lovely ladies. As a fan of Nightwish, I'm happy to see reactions from people who have never listened to this wonderful band. Continue your adventure in the world of our beloved group. I would recommend you to react to some songs from the band's latest album like "NOISE" , "SHOEMAKER" , or "PAN,". And Tomas Holopainen some analysts call Metal Mozart 🙂 Thank you for the video. Greetings from Bulgaria ❤

@@greygreen5610 They are now for sure., but are some times referredt as Northern pipes and I couldnt remember the name off the top of my head.The Uilleann pipes or union pipes might have originated from the Pastoral pipes (Border pipes, Northumbrian pipes, Scottish smallpipes) and gained popularity in Ireland within the Protestant Anglo-Irish community and its gentlemen pipers, who could afford such expensive hand-made instruments.

Hi girls, The man playing the flute/low whitles and the Uilleann pipes is Troy Donockley - a member of the band, who can play 12 musical instruments, compose music and sing!!! What a musician! He's mostly seen playing low whistles, Uilleann pipes (irish bagpipes), guitar or bouzuki in the Nightwish performances. Troy and Tuomas are my favorite band members. BTW, the guy, speaking during the song, was professor Richard Dawkins, one of the biggest personalities in the world of evolutionary biology. 😄

Great recap:) I going full blasdphemic Mode, i confess that the Intro is something i sometimes use to get some Coffee, my Machine need 2 Minutes for one Cup, so...:) you sat it it through vaillant:) Tuomas really is credited in this Video, agreed Donna. Floor and Marco are mostly the Center of Imaging in the Recordings. I were somehow worried, its to experimental and spheric/heavy switched for your Taste. So i am happy it did get you...well again:) Kai the Drummer stepped in for his Friend and part Time Student Jukka, as he had to retire bcs of health Reasons. "Men, He invented Poetry, but one Day, forgot the last Light in the Library"- this Line always hits me.Looking at nowadays western World, and how we do destroy our Legacy for simple material Possesons and Power, or doing nothing to stop the warmongering an earthpolluting Activities instead of just live side by side having an simple greatest Show on Earth for ourselfs and our Beloved. Much more to say, but hey, i am already blubbering, so: Stay healthy! NWA Frankonia, Bavaria, Germany

It does not get pointed out enough i feel, but Floor... she's the perfect role model for women of any age group. Some female singers represent "Girl Power" but Floor goes far beyond that, she represents "Female Power". She's powerful, elegant, charming, charismatic, intelligent, strong, confident, alluring, secure, approachable, honest, humble, aware of her abilities, a leader, and a beautiful human being. And in my book, those are all traits to look up to, to get inspired by, if i had a daughter.. i would want her to learn from Floor how to be all she could ever be, Floor is the perfect role model. And this song? Magnum Opus... incredible song and it might be my favorite song by Nightwish (i honestly cannot pick a favorite, all their songs bring something amazing to the table). To create a song that tells the story of the birth of our planet, the evolution of life, the birth of humankind and the history leading to present day, that should not only be impossible, it should not work because it simply is way too much for one song to handle..... and yet.. Nightwish pulls it off, and then some... it's a perfect song. And having Sir Richard Dawkins, who's book inspired Tuomas to create this masterpiece, do the narration? .. that's the cherry on top of this multi layered cake of pure awesomeness.

The instrument Troy was playing was Uilleann Pipes, basically the Irish variant of the Scottish bagpipes. Carol, my beautiful wife of 42 years, and I had the great pleasure of traveling from Phoenix to see them perform live at the historic Warfield Theatre in San Francisco on May 18th, 2022.
