@JMackin882 ай бұрын
San Francisco actually has green lights on the front end of their truck companies only and that’s due to the heavy fog that the city experiences; that allows a chief or even other incoming companies to know that that company should get the front of the building as that is a truck company. Chicago has the green lights on all apparatus due to historical traditions involving maritime law whereas San Francisco has it for positioning on a fire building.

I live in S.F. and know the department and that station well. It’s in the top 3 of busiest stations in the City, and in the top 20 in the US. About 85% of its calls are medical, as they are in the heart of the largest homeless/drug OD populated parts of the City. It’s a very tough house, with the near constant trauma they have dealt with over the years. Maybe 1 death per day that they respond to, and dozens of OD’s and other trauma, like the first call where someone wanted to jump off a building. Happens regularly. As to specifics, that door was indeed heavily damaged and it took awhile to repair, as it was a custom made door for the station. Also, the engine and ladder are 5-8 years old, but that is the reserve rescue, as their much newer rescue keeps breaking down …most new rigs have a bad time in S.F., due to the wear and tear from the busted streets, hills, etc. Electronics, busted frames and body mounts, etc. Older rigs just hold up better --that spare rescue is maybe 30 years old now, and runs just fine. The station near my home has been running with a reserve pumper that dates back to 1993 for close to four years now, and it runs like a champ. New rigs are crap, because they wind up buying usually from the lowest bidder, without factoring in downtime…the troops hate it…☹️ Very traditional department, full of amazing history and culture. Has had its ups and downs with racial tensions over the decades, but it’s pretty calm in recent years. And it doesn’t hurt that the average firefighter pay is in the $175-$180K range - and it was recently reported that a goodly number are in the $200-250K range due to overtime needed to staff the department. Not a bad gig..😊

In the US and Canada the designations are E-Engine P-Pumper W-Wagon (wagons can only have a driver and carry hose and a tank of water, or can just be another name for engine or pumper) (engine, pumper, and wagon all mean the same thing in many departments), rarely there are 2-piece engine companies (a wagon and a pumper travel everywhere together - Washington DC used to have this system) T-Truck L-Ladder (same as a truck) S-Squad (can be heavy rescue or a smaller utility vehicle) R-Rescue (some places this is a behemoth heavy rescue squad truck, and other places it is an ambulance) A-Ambulance (usually basic life support) M-Medic (advanced life support ambulance). Tanker- large tank of water on a truck. Buggy or car (chief's vehicle--buggy is a holdover from horse-drawn days, as is wagon).
