Good job! Exploring old cemeteries is one of my favorite things. Several of those experienced the Civil War. I can’t imagine how hard that was. I had the honor of marking my ggg-grandparents graves. He was born in 1790 and she was born in 1795. I’m so thankful that someone knew which graves were their’s. Every generation after them had markers.

Thank you for setting a good example! I am not a person who goes to visit family in graveyards often, it is an individual choice. However, I do like to visit them sometimes, and any time I do, I pick up garbage, replace flowers that have come loose, etc. I do this for the living, and so that we do not forget the folks who lived before us. I learned to leave any place I come to better when I leave than when I arrived, if possible-thank you, Judy and Jennifer for that lesson.

It's so sad that the city's and towns are not keeping up with their cemeteries. So many out there in the wood's that are neglected. I believe they do have old Map's of these older cemeteries. We need to keep our Ancestry line going for our future generations. I wish I had some place to see my families plots but in the Azores they dig them up after seven year's and place them in the catacombs. We just have documents to research and obtain. At least here im able to go to the grave and visit my parent's.

Very nice, Robert and James! I’d be willing to bet that there are a few more (older) graves back just beyond that tree line. The trees and undergrowth encroach over time, if not trimmed and cut, and it looks like it’s been creeping closer. I couldn’t help but notice that there were many stones indicating a death date of 1933. I wonder what was going on that year - diphtheria? Cholera? Typhoid? It would be interesting to know what happened as it doesn’t seem like a coincidence… Thanks for the leaf clean-up here. It looks so much nicer. May they all rest In peace.

@@dawnh7620 Maybe. I went back through to catch the dates as best I could, and they seemed to me to be clustered in the fall. I’ve searched the internet for awhile. I can’t find a thing except that so many in Arkansas were in dire straits with no food or decent clothing that year, a couple of years into the Depression with floods and then drought that I feel like pretty much any disease would have carried them off. 😢
@ThatLittleTexanWoman

I wondered the same thing about all the 1933 graves. Something particularly bad must have spread through that town that year. Death certificates might be available through genealogy sites to provide a bit more information about what happened.

Old cemeteries are a treasure trove. We have 2 very old ones on property that we own and we try to be respectful of them. Great history lesson. I did some rubbings with dark chalk and brown wrapping paper held up on the stone. There is a special solution to use to actually clean the gunk off of the stones, too. Great job on preserving historical information !
